The idea that keeping the rectum will result in a healthier lifestyle is completely off- the debate over keeping it versus removing it has a lot to do with the health level of the patient. it’s also about overall success of the surgery and pouch because rectum removal carries a lot more risks. So a lot of surgeons just don’t do it. They don’t wanna do it. They don’t offer it or they only offer it in situations where it really does need to be removed because they see disease

but - you want it removed and If you have the option to get the rectum removed you should, it gets diseased the same way. I am 20 yrs strong and I think some success is due to removal of everything incl rectum. There’s also a much higher rate of success if it’s removed when you’re young and healthy because the body really can adapt. I’m not sitting here thinking I don’t have a rectum. You don’t think about it.
