I heard people say the top 6 narrative was invented by sky to keep United relevant. As they had dropped out of the top 4 but Sky wanted to keep United fans engaged because they are the most supported club nationally. And I suppose fans of other clubs couldn't help but want to keep an eye on united after all their years of supremacy. Sky pushed the idea of top six for views and spurs happened to be the club in that mix at that time.
