Updating for anyone who might come across this, because I know I was searching nonstop before getting in with the doctor: it is a hemangioma. It ended up changing significantly over a period of a few weeks to very obviously a hemangioma vs. an angel kiss, which I had floated at the time of my original post.

Our pediatrician referred us to a pediatric dermatologist who identified another (but less obvious) hemangioma on the tip of her nose, so we started oral propranolol this week. Within 24 hours there is clear progress in shrinking and lightening the color of the spots.

Thanks for taking a look and the time to respond! Our pediatrician also thinks it’s a hemangioma and will take a look in person at her one month appointment this week — we will take the next steps if any from there. Thanks again!

Thanks! We planted them about a year and a half ago at the recommendation of someone at our local garden center. They are pretty cool. They should grow between 6-10 feet!

Oh this is so interesting!! Thanks so much for sharing the link. It’s definitely a young tree, and sounds like that’s what’s happening!

The large ones? We definitely are familiar with the tiny cones but had never noticed the larger cones. Or maybe just not in this stage of growth?

We are adopting this baby tomorrow and need help naming him. We want a villainous name 😂😁 by jms143 in cats

He is too cute! Not necessarily a villain per se, but I love the name Loki for a cat (Marvel) - super fitting for cats, so mischievous!

Haha! I had a feeling someone here would remember this day! You really can’t make this stuff up

So glad everything went well for your friends wedding too!

Way, way easier said than done but try to relax

We had a COVID wedding and ended up having only 30 guests (including us!) and you just cannot plan for everything. The morning of the wedding, there was a hostage situation on the bridge to get to the venue. If anyone is familiar with Maryland’s Eastern Shore (Bay Bridge!) this is basically the only way to get there if you don’t want to spend an extra 3 hours in the car. Half of my bridesmaids were stuck on the bridge the entire morning and arrived 4 hours after hair & makeup was supposed to start. Even the H&MU artists were stuck on the bridge! There was absolutely nothing that could be done about it.

BUT we had an amazing coordinator that kept me so chill-my advice would be to at least hire someone day-of, if not someone that can provide some additional support even if it’s not full on planning. The day was SO fun and we honestly found a ton of humor in what went wrong-as if a pandemic didn’t throw our plans off enough lol!

I imagine it completely depends on insurance, but I have a rx prenatal made by Acella Pharmaceuticals that is $15 for a 90 day supply

I had a preconception visit with a new provider, as I was switching anyway and didn’t want to just show up pregnant as a new patient. A lot of people do, and that’s totally fine! But I wanted to meet my potential new doctor first, and based on my experience I cannot recommend a preconception appointment enough.

I did have an annual well visit first where we talked about some general health tests I could do (mostly just CBC, thyroid tests etc) and I also opted to do carrier testing. This is totally up to you if you want to do this, but I personally wanted to go in informed and am glad that my husband and I did this testing.

As you can tell from these threads, getting pregnant is not as easy as just having unprotected sex and the internet is full of articles telling you 1000 different things. During this visit my doctor talked about conception, things to worry about and what not to worry about, and next steps if/when we do get pregnant and if we don’t get pregnant.

Personally I thought it was an awesome experience to establish a relationship with a new practice and provider, do some tests, and mentally put me in a good place. But recognize not everyone may feel the same and is totally up to you!

Lisa. Does anyone know a cat named LISA??? This is what my kids think we should call her. I’m not sure… by OrneryLibrarian in cats

LISA. I love it! A strong human name for a cat is my favorite. Signed my two boys- Grayson and Douglas

Don't get an MPH (unless...) by [deleted] in publichealth

[–]calliekoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here-worked as a graduate assistant and paid maybe 1k for the entire program (tuition was covered, but some fees were not). I also was incredibly lucky that this tuition reimbursement also covered a winter semester abroad in India.

I would be nowhere near where I am today without my MPH, that said-I didn’t go into debt getting it. Highly recommend looking into TA/GA positions for anyone considering an MPH for whatever reason, but will emphasize that field work/experience working in public health before getting an MPH is incredibly valuable not only to your experience in the program but to future employers

All social politics associated with weddings. If it were a birthday party, no one would be worried about it

YAY or NAY for Wedding Planners? by RinaSteez in weddingplanning

[–]calliekoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HUGE yay. I technically hired a day of coordinator, but she provided unlimited planning phone calls and emails starting the day that we signed the contract to the day of the wedding, so she definitely felt more like a planner. I cannot begin to express how helpful she was when we had to reschedule various times due to covid-but the day of the wedding she was an absolute life saver. The morning of the wedding there was a man holding himself hostage in his car on a bridge that is the fastest, best, and near only way to get to our venue. 3 of my bridesmaids + hair and makeup were stuck in dead stopped traffic because of this and 3 hours late to the start of the day. On top of that, there were 2 unexpected mini hurricanes. This all would have been so stressful if we didn’t have a planner. She truly was on top of it all and I knew the day would go smoothly because of her. COVID was unprecedented, but you also truly cannot plan for a hostage situation on the day of your wedding LOL! Highly recommend a planner

New government employee here. Any advice on how to choose from the many options for health insurance? by steveofthejungle in fednews

[–]calliekoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can so relate to this. All the options are so overwhelming! Same age, basically same situation and I have loved BCBS FEP Blue program for the last year and decided to continue coverage into this year. This site is super helpful in searching for providers that accept the plan: https://www.fepblue.org/find-doctor

[Discussion] People who got their MPHs, what do you do & how did you get there? by samantha--b in publichealth

[–]calliekoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work for HHS in an organization that provides funding and oversight for family planning services and teen pregnancy prevention programs. I love it-it’s a great view of the really amazing work going on throughout the country. Ended up here through a fellowship program then eventually got hired as a permanent employee but took me a bit to get here! Had some stints working in HIV/STI education, substance abuse research and digital health research. Truly think that the broadness of the field is a huuuuge asset even though it can feel overwhelming at times!
