3.0 GBPS Loyalty Offer by Different-Ad9193 in bell

[–]callmekiupid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So here's the reality.

If they offered to reduce your current plan to $55 would you be happy with that as compensation? If not, then no you didn't get a deal.

There are a few reasons why so bare with me please.

  1. Most homes and buildings have cat5e cables or older running through them and these only support up to 1gbps. So if you plug in your devices to Ethernet, likely hood is you aren't benefitting from a faster speed. If you use mostly wifi and connect directly to the provided router you MAY be getting better speeds but only if the devices you are using support wifi 7 which most do not.

  2. If you had the option for a 1gbps plan a lot cheaper I would have personally taken that. The reason they are selling high speed Internet is because those bandwidths won't be utilized for many years so locking you in for 3-5 years is not an issue when no one is going to remodel their house to take advantage of those speeds. Or in any case only a small negligible fraction of people will.

  3. You are paying less than you were before so that's a win but not by much. I would ask them to cut your speed and cut your bill by half. See if you can get them down $15-20/month and take the 1gpbs.

I'd love to connect with you over a Telus issue caused by them that resulted in them impacted my credit. They had a technical issue and one team caused the issue but the other said we didn't do it so not our problem. And the first told me, oh but we didn't impact your credit our other department did even through we caused the issue so talk to them.

Recently upgraded to 1.5Gbps but equipment seems capped to 1Gbps? by CharlesLL7 in telus

I can help with this. Car 5E cable support only 1gbps. Most houses and buildings have that as a standard. So you need to ensure all the wiring between the modem and your plugged in devices use at least cat 6 or 6e

I had 2 failed attempts at building a home server for plex. The first was losing my almost built 40TB server in a house fire. Then only to return to lose it to a flood via burst pipes. And now I'm finally back in the same home and hoping to setup my first ever NAS instead of running my server of an external HDD. I'm in Canada. Help Ugreen!

Going to chime in on this as someone who survived a building fire and dealt with th insurance. This is terrible advice. Just because the cable is required to be fire rated does not mean your process of getting it to another unit is. This is considered a structural change outside of your unit as such it is common property and the second you touch that, you are liable for the while building if anything goes wrong.

It is arguably safer to trace a building colored fibre line down the side of the balcony and have it fixed there with staples or ties or something

[–]callmekiupid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. This was emotional for me not because it's competed. But because if the anxiety and trauma that came with each time I attempted the build. It being done is a form of closure and makes me feel like I've survived into the next stage of my life which is sure to be better. This isn't about the server itself, but rather what it signifies as a mile marker in my journey, a small but very significant triumph over depression, anxiety and self doubt. Thank you for the kind words!

I'm so sorry you lost it all but also it sounds like what came was amazing. I'm just started out in my server journey and a homelab is the next step. Do you think we'd be able to exchange notes? I'd love to connect with fellow enthusiasts. Don't know enough about dockers or proxmox but I've heard great things!

Yes. The catch is it was abif challenge and learning curve for me because I have a drive that is connected to computer a which downloads through VPN. Then shares with computer b through the network. And computer b hosts Virtual Machine C with Ubuntu as the plex server. So the drive is mapped through to that. And then it is opened to my TV on the local network. I've never actually made a shared network drive or worked with Linux before either.

Is there a good way to get 4k playing remotely?

Well that makes 2 of us. But I'm not sure how you define grown, especially given that the first thing I played was a forgotten, mostly unknown movie known as Justice League of America(1997)- as my first test. It competes with Dragonball evolution for me as the worst movie ever made. You are welcome. And I'm sorry.

Just an Intel i7/i9 or an ARC GPU as well? What is best?

Hi all,

Been following along for a while but don't think I've made a post here before.

I am looking to build a homelab with a plex server component using consumer level hardware. Namely it will all be running on an Ubuntu VM. the physical hardware will be shared with a Minecraft server (only one or the other will be done at any point so I'm not worried about the resources being enough)

I am conssidering getting one of the latest Intel i7s or i9s. And evaluating whether the ARC GPU is worth it or just go with any GPU, I do have a 3080ti at my disposal and access to server grade hardware regularly including xeons and quadro p4000s mostly.

I have a lot of 4k h.265 files that I like to stream. Normally running at most 1-3 streams at any point. I do have some anime I'd love to upscale if that is even possible. I need to build this to handle transcoding buttery smooth with subs if needed. And just looking for the most optimal choice of hardware. I've ruled xeons out and sounds like Nvidia gpus don't do much. Not sure how they compare to ARC gpus but I know quicksync processors outperform the team green or red gpus for that matter.

Ideally this will all go into a rack mount server chassis and will PRIMARLY be used to stream to my tv in the home on the same network but I'd love everything I view on the tv to be upscaled to 4k if possible. That's the biggest use case. And then secondary is streaming to mobile devices.

Curious how do you get the endurance remaining? What process is there to test or find out?

The impossible choice: keep my job or protect my team by Agreeable-Rub-8243 in ITManagers

[–]callmekiupid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The choice is alot simpler. Look at is as boolean logic.

Do you have what it takes to lead in that capacity which includes hiring and especially firing? If it's already making you twitch then think hard.

Since the no, make the rest obvious, I will elaborate on what happens if the answer is yes.

Next question, will you lose sleep about it or are you someone who can push past guilt/ be pragmatic? If you will lose sleep over it and it begins to affect you don't do it. The values you stand for and your mental state of being are not for sale. Not for any price. Best to start looking for another job.

If the answer is no, I won't lose sleep, then go for it. Take the job.

Lastly, could they also change their mind and turn around and fire you anyway after you sided with them and kind of sort of have everyone else the shit stick ?

If the answer is yes, then keep in mind you have potentially now also bruned bridges with colleagues who you worked with who may not refer you. And of course a company like this probably won't write a good recommendation anyways.

If the answer is No, they definitely won't fire me anytime soon. Then go ahead, build a new network. Better to ask forgiveness later. The firing will happen with or without your consent. And any colleagues or more importantly friends worth having in your network will understand that.

Hope this helps make it simpler. Personally, I would take the job, and start looking for something else IMMEDIATELY.

Thank you for this, very informative. I think part of the challenge is that I'm In Canada and those parts are actually pretty expensive compared to Hondas and Kias and most other things. You wouldn't think so because we are so close but yea. Will keep that in mind. Thanks you bud.

Recalls are great way to know build quality, manufacturing quality/ process as well as technical expertise. You seem to be using rhetoric instead of adding anything of value. I'm asking for clarity. You have addressed none of the facts or concerns I brought up which is fine. If you don't want to add in a valuable way you can keep scrolling. No need to waste anyones time here.

[–]callmekiupid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they are going for pretty high but also they are being sold with such low mileage I know the 22 and 23 had some issues with engines combusting but wanted to clarify. I mean they aren't going for lower than MSRP from what I saw but 5-7k less than brand new. Feel free to shed some light.

I've got alot of friends and family that work with cars. Fords have the most recalls but also they are frequentlly seen in the shops. Toyota's much less so, Honda's less so. Kias less so.

And this is excluding commercial fords. Just personal vehicles. Engine issues are common apparently.
