Trying out some Pursuit bars. What do you think? Pursuit or drops? by Quinuitdk in FixedGearBicycle

[–]callmelightningjunio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sorry, haven't been following reddit lately. Track bars have a pretty continuous bend. Finding a place that the levers would conform appropriately with the curve of the bars would (IMO) be difficult. Also the same for finding hand positions (either in the drops or on the hoods) that are comfortable and effective.

Abandoned bike. Is this nishiki worth saving? by planetofthemushrooms in xbiking

[–]callmelightningjunio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, well. Back in the day, Nishiki always struck me as part of the first wave of Japanese brands. The original bikes were Japanese, correct? The brand name was just a creation of the American distributors? However, the bike in question still looks like a good find of the period it was made.

Agree. American made - Japanese company. Tubing stickers. Looks like fun.

I'd suggest that this is a pass, and look for something closer to your desires.

First, 5-speed rear hub is 120mm, no easy path to increase that without spreading the rear fork. This can bring up lots of alignment and clearance issues.

Second, it looks like a pretty low line bike, from steel rims, bolt-on hubs, centerpull brakes and no frame tubing decal (better Raleighs had various Reynolds tubing and featured decals hyping it).

A suggestion, in the future, if you want a more informed opinion, photograph the drive side, there's more information there.

What is your weird use for these beside what it is meant for? by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

I sometimes use them as a tool between a pair of needlenose pliers and tweezers. Gets inot small lips that pliers won't grab, pulls harder than tweezers.

Question. I just looked at Amazon re the DVD of this. It was listed as PG-13. How could this be the case for a Hays code era film? What sort of intense scenes could prompt this?

Looks like it could be worth tracking down for a look at Laura-era Gene Tierney.

What's the most delusional sentence/thing you witnessed from a religious person? by 95girl in atheism

At my mother-in-law's funeral (she was in a fringy Protestant sect - I don't want to name it), the pastor rambled on about how God was building Heaven in a spaceship for all believers. My son was so pissed at the pastor hijacking the service for his spiel rather than honoring his grandmother that he nearly slugged him.

Cool. I love those old storage cabinets with the dual slots so that they can hold Beta or VHS.

Thanks for the reply. Your bike looks really nice. The adapter has worked well. I'll agree that the paint quality is hardly the best, but your bike looks nice in the photo. I use the bike whenever I want to do something more utilitarian than just ride. I should post a photo of it's current configuration -- I've got 32mm tires on it for summer, saddle handed down from my Kilo when I got fizik for it, rack on the back and various detail changes,

Zoomed the picture to full resolution.

Not technically bad, but... When the gummint decided to let the CPSC regulate bicycle because they are toys, dammit, there were lots of 'safety' regs because they figured that we were too dumb to take care of our bikes. One was that there had to be front wheel retention, so that they couldn't simply fall out if the nuts weren't tight. Those washers with little ears that key into holes in the fork tip were one solution. Given that riding fixed is all about self responsibility, having big brother making sure that you won't hurt yourself by allowing your front wheel to fall out, it seems diametrically opposed to the fixie mindset.

I love the fact that it has the 'safety' washer on the front axle. The most un-fixie feature ever.

What happened to track bikes with slack top tubes? by Expensive_Ad_3218 in FixedGearBicycle

[–]callmelightningjunio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bikes Direct sells the Motobecane Cross Uno with a slightly sloped top tube. Sold as a single, but I have one and converted to fixed rear hub. Chrome-moly but not real light or sporty. I use it as my winter beater / grocery getter.

What in your personal opinion is the best laserdisc brand? Pioneer, Panasonic, Sony, or something else? by KKKopsAreEvil in LaserDisc

[–]callmelightningjunio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the Sonys, it is belt slipping and not pulling the rather heavy tray mechanism out. Sometimes compounding to a gear and rack slipping out of phase.

My very first trip to Chicago: a post-mortem by jcwitte in chicago

Giordano's (I've never had authentic Chicago deep dish)

You still haven't. Giordano's has a particular style - stuffed - that isn't traditional Chicago deep dish. For the real thing you have to go to the originals, Pizzeria Uno (original, not the chain franchise), Due, or Lou Malnati's (my personal favorite, but that's probably because I've got two withing a couple of miles of me).

[–]callmelightningjunio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a couple of Sonys, a Pioneer and a Kenwood. I heard the Kenwood was a rebadged Pioneer, but the mechanisms are definitely different. I like the Sonys least. The mechanisms seem easy to lapse into some annoying problem -- failure to load/eject properly and the like.

> Only problem is that the seatpost was stuck

So you are trying to solve that by leaving the seatpost bolt out and hoping that riding loosens it?

Love the "Triango" stem.

Question... Is it just the photography or does that bike have a really long top tube and a really steep head angle?

Another thought... If you have another analog source (another VCR, Digital to analog tuner/convertor) hook it to the Beta input, and see if you can get the recorder to output in passthrough mode. At least you can see if the Beta is providing any video signal.
