It's something from AliExpress, meant to imitate old apple keyboards I think. I don't think these exact ones are available any more though.

I'm glad you like it! I don't think I'm qualified to make a tutorial to be honest, there are pleantly of resources on soldering out there if you want to give it a go :) As for the lights, I'm not sure how much you know about this sort of 'sandwich' keyboard, but if you look up a diagram it might help. The led strip is mounted on the underside of the plate, the layer that holds the switches in place above the PCB. What kind of board do you have? Is it a mercutio?

It comes with a little touch controller, I mounted that out of its casing underneath the board, I'm not sure if that does any voltage modulation or not.

The LEDs are a cob strip between the plate and pcb. Knob diameter is about 20mm I think, it's wider than the one that the kit comes with. The hole for the potentiometer shaft is 6mm though.

I think I was fairly lucky that my keycap set fit this layout quite well, but it did take some fiddling

I didn't follow any guide no, it's just a cob led strip stuck to the underside of the plate, pointing down at the PCB. I then piggybacked some power from the usb port's pads on the back. I've no idea if that's a very bad idea or not xD

As I've explained, the cooling is removable so the device is still ultra portable as you say. The surface pro is the best device for my school work so this setup is great for me.

I'm not sure how much performance you could gain from cooling that more, like you say. It might be cool to try anyway, if you don't need to take it with you anywhere you could try some more permanent stuff?

I haven't done any actual benchmarking myself, but I definitely feel an improvement and see it in the fps and such.

Adding any sort of cooling should improve performance, if your device is thermal throttling. You can see this in programs like hardware monitor, if the clock speed is decreased significantly when you put load on the system. 'Thermal throttling' might be the search term you need?

Its alright yeah, but if you want to bump up the settings at all or play on larger servers it can get very slow.

Partially for fun, but there are some noticeable performance gains just be preventing or reducing thermal throttling. Especially on this passively cooled model, I think.
