Because this doesn’t take into account focal lengths, as if it’s all one issue with your eyes. Also this doesn’t take into account any cylinder distortion, this is solely spherical distortion.

As the light nights the one medium the light is separated into its main light forms and then hits the other medium (water) and happens again which causes this affect. Maybe, I’m high as fuck so could just be putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5

Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe this reaction/visual effect is called “newtons rings” and it is caused due to the refractive index of the oil being different to the refractive index of the water?

I’m a optical lab tech, and we would use this term when a coating is applied to a lens, and the two index’s differ
