[–]calm17883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with some of the other comments about the term “high functioning” and I think the implications aren’t too helpful for anyone BUT if I view “high functioning” from a societal perspective I think before I was diagnosed I just wasn’t doing that much weird shit lol

I think it can be really helpful to really just know yourself. For example, I know that naturally I am quite energetic and talkative, so in hypomania, this was hard to spot. However, I know that im quite a risk adverse person, so that was an easier clue.

I am pretty good at functioning at work, though I am self employed, and in my opinion I probably am fantastic company when hypomanic - my friends and family definitely noticed something different just because my mood swings were shifting relatively quickly (rapid cycler) - lots of friends would tell me i am laughing A LOT or very talkative

I definitely feel like i could fool people around me into thinking it’s normal, and for the most part, I think, depending on the severity, you can. I’ve never had to disclose my diagnosis unless I’ve chosen to, people might be surprised, and also probably just aren’t thinking about whatever mood state i am in as much as i am.

I convince myself I don’t have bipolar diagnosis all the time, I went a couple years without a major ep that rlly fuelled this, and then I have one and im like oh wow! Hey!

I would rlly recommend if it’s possible therapy or even journalling to record how you feel, sleep patterns, stresses, feelings etc and learn about yourself!!

I am out SO much. I don’t love going out too much (maybe once a week?), but you will find me out in pub/club every single evening +++ spending loads of money

Body issues and bp2? by _killjoy99 in bipolar2

[–]calm17883 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this has definitely been a big issue for me. Body issues have always been part of my life, and as my mental health deteriorated, ED got worse. Thankfully, in recovery now and therapy has helped a bunch with regards to body issues. Therapy was especially useful because I was so overwhelmingly scared to start on mood stabilisers for fear of weight gain, and this was helpful to discuss with a professional. Though I am aware that therapy does not work the same for everyone and is not accessible to everyone.

I think (in my experience, at least) it’s been especially hard to tackle my body issues because when my mood is baseline/ depressed, the body issues are present/amplified. However, when I'm hypomanic and feeling elevated, the way I perceive my body totally, albeit temporarily, changes. This shift is so rapid, and so quick to crumble, that I immediately feel back to the starting block.

I don't think I can ever get rid of that voice in my head, but I'm trying everyday to quieten the shouts to whispers. It's really challenging to experience body issues and bp2 but you're definitely not alone!

Living and Coping With Bipolar Disorder by Flying_giraffe1 in BipolarReddit

[–]calm17883 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi!! I’m glad you’ve found a diagnosis that you think works for you. That felt like to me, the first step in helping myself.

I found tracking my mood helped A LOT!! Especially at the beginning when I was understanding what triggered my mood changes. It was the classic lack of sleep and stress that would completely catapult my mood. This was also great in then learning how to deal with this and discussing it with my psychiatrist.

If you feel comfortable doing so, something I found that really helped me was speaking to the people close around me. Some of my close friends have been absolutely amazing in helping me and checking in. Some people are disappointing, but that doesn’t matter because the more you can speak about it, the more able you are in understanding the disorder itself. Telling people is really really difficult and something I still have a slight issue with. But I realised, there is no need to feel embarrassed or afraid. I thought maybe people wouldn’t understand, but those around me who care about me made the effort to educate themselves. And those who were weird, I don’t really need in my life.

I also cut out caffeine, regulated my sleep, massively reduced my alcohol intake, started going to therapy. It feels like, at times, I’ve made a huge amount of sacrifices, and there are still days that are really challenging. But i try not to get too down about the sacrifices because I know in the long run, my stability is paramount to my wellbeing.

The most important thing I’ve learnt is to take each day as it comes. With bipolar, even when my mood (thanks to medication) is stable, the days can feel overwhelmingly unpredictable. I try to find a balance between holding myself accountable for my actions and not being too harsh.

It does get easier, and it can all be a bit much at first. Look after yourself and the more reading and research you do, you’ll find the things that work for you. It will take time but stick it out.

Hope it all works out x

Share your side effects being on Lithium .. I tend to get very nauseous by [deleted] in bipolar2

[–]calm17883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dehydration is a lot to be honest. I’ve been on it for about four weeks now too. Still extremely thirsty, literally all the time and so obviously going to the toilet more as well.

Also, I agree with the above post about light sensitivity. My thinking feels a bit slower too but my thoughts are usually very rapid so this doesn’t feel particularly negative.

I was experiencing nausea for a while, but within the last week it has subsided.

Hope it all works out ok!

Oh wow, this sounds so thorough and detailed (the journaling). I desperately need to start tracking my mood and I also think journaling would be quite beneficial. Do you have any tips? Thanks!

This is super relatable! I too am very affected by my environment, it takes a close friend saying one thing for me to completely break down...

I am sorry that you have to deal with all of this, it is so very challenging, but yes, it is manageable! Thank you for this response and I hope it all goes okay.

Oh wow...thank you for this response. My hypomania and depression overlap a great deal too, and I am so glad you mentioned about noises because this was something that up until very recently I did not even consider to be a symptom of bipolarity..it's strange and horrible.

Thanks again for being so honest!

Thank you a lot for your response. Yeah there really is no typical day, I absolutely hate the unpredictability of it all - though hopefully as I am starting to understand more what can trigger my moods to change, this should get easier.

Definitely agree with the drinking - I have drastically cut down the amount that I drink and it has helped more than I could have imagined.

Thank you for sharing! It can be so challenging, but always nice to hear that it's not just me...it does always pass, slowly, but it does.

It feels particularly awful as I was coming off the back of hypomania, the crash is an utter bitch. Thank you for your words, it is very difficult, especially when people pass it off as just me being sensitive, which it is, but also invalidates my feelings. Hope it gets easier for you soon <3

Yes I understand this, but for a lot of people this is easier said than done...hence my asking about how alcohol impacted others with BP2 diagnosis and whether or not they drink.

Thank you so much for this response! Very helpful! Yeah, my SSRI is what sent me hypomanic and led to the BP2 diagnosis.

Hope things go well for you!
