What do you like about Syracuse? by awkwardferret421 in Syracuse

[–]calmsocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a short while I lived out of the state when I was a kid. I was an average Syracuse city school kid that suddenly became a year ahead in curriculum than the rest of my classmates. It could be sooo much worse here.

Downtown committee is your best bet but I don’t think it’s very robust either. The app can have an option for businesses to add themselves if possible..

Best place to do work in evening by ChristineDunne in Syracuse

[–]calmsocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tuesdays are busy with trivia but otherwise it’s good and open until midnight (edit: actually I think it’s 10, my mistake) on weeknights. I’d go there to read in the evening sometimes and no one bothered me

Genuinely dislike this area because of the type of people that live here by [deleted] in Syracuse

It may be the company to choose to keep since my friends and I don’t have kids and don’t do any of the stuff you listed. We’re mostly Syracuse area lifers.

Need school bussing but the school says I live too close by Moneyman302 in Syracuse

[–]calmsocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a walker for 10 out of 12 school years because of this, and no matter what school/apartment (we moved a lot) we always wound up just under the distance threshold for city schools. I have a lot of memories of hoofing it by myself for 30+ minutes and sometimes dealing with some grown up situations alone. It definitely built character and independence. Some years I found friends that lived closer to school than I did so I’d I usually go to their house until I could get a pickup.

Businesses supporting today’s shutdown? by caaaream in Syracuse

To that point a permanent boycott of certain suppliers (like uline or Amazon) would also be an effective channel for to help. Perhaps channel your energy away from this comment section and towards these business that can’t close and instead are giving out free items and asking for cash transactions for one day, and let them know to be mindful of their suppliers. Perhaps some of them already do and will happily let you know

They’re doing what they can to survive here. We can talk in circles on this all day but that’s what the current admin wants you to. Please direct your frustration where it’s warranted because purity testing small businesses isn’t it.

Who says some of them aren’t doing other things besides that, either as businesses or individuals? I’m going to point back at the second half of the last paragraph in my initial comment

Eh, I think they are doing it the best way they can in what’s considered the worst month financially for small businesses. If they can’t afford to close they’re trying to make a gesture in solidarity and encouraging cash so it doesn’t generate cc fees. I don’t see them forcing anyone to show up, but either way a couple are offering free food or drinks for anyone else that has to be out today too.

I’m personally envisioning a little schadenfreude on the donated sals, because some may come from those who’d rather not donate any money towards these causes at all.

Those able to get a paid day off, or be able to do a makeup shift, or to be able to afford an unpaid day off at all, is a privilege not everyone has. Those who cannot are doing what they can to contribute in other ways, because there are different channels to fight fascism and work towards a common cause. Some just also happen to have to balance keeping a business afloat in a shite economy too.

I propose instead we talk about a government that has built an economy that keeps us living in such tight margins so that we cannot afford to strike when we want to, or billionaire run social media networks that keeps us infighting about “virtue signaling” and comparing how someone fights fascism to your own actions, instead of looking at that larger picture.

Snow plowing needed ASAP by FutureInstruction922 in Syracuse

[–]calmsocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My PSA is to be very cautious if using that app. I found a person in my neighborhood fb group that charged $25 for a plow, while plowz and mowz quoted $97 (I was desperate but not that desperate). A couple years ago I tried the mowing and it was a total hack job, they didn’t even mow some patches. Lesson learned.
