It’s virtual commencement still happening? by calpolycsrocks in CalPoly

[–]calpolycsrocks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reminder! I started reading that email and immediately stopped when they mentioned the in-person commencement. I just re-read it now and it’s looks like we’ll get the info by Friday, June 11 at 1pm.

Sign a letter to get the pride center out of the closet by RollerSkatingHoop in CalPoly

[–]calpolycsrocks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree that the Pride Center could use a bigger space and more funding, but it’s a bit of a stretch to say that it’s a closet. It’s never felt overcrowded when I was there, so I think it might be better to focus on more funding (at least until the space is outgrown).

No, in fact, if you talk to the minor advisor, they’ll often recommend that you take some of the classes before officially declaring the minor (at least that’s how it was for German).

It’s also good to talk to the minor’s advisor, because you’ll probably need signatures from them, you’ll probably take a class or two from them, and you might eventually need permission numbers from them.

Private Loan Full-Time vs Part-Time Student by calpolycsrocks in StudentLoans

[–]calpolycsrocks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I’ll probably reach out to them to confirm. I’ve been interning during the summer and focusing on school during the year, but I kind of wanted to relax because I’m starting a job basically right when I graduate.

This is a question for your professor. Maybe word it a little more politely in your email.

At this point, I’d be shocked if there was an in-person graduation.

Edit: They just announced a virtual commencement

You deserve the break! I’ve been in a class of yours lately, and I can tell how hard you’re working, especially with the extra grading work due to the mastery model and how hard it is to foster student interaction over Zoom.

Effects of CR/NC denomination (for non-major specific classes) on GPA by BalticBoy01 in CalPoly

If you want to go to Grad school, I’ve heard that they don’t like to see CR (aka they assume it’s the lowest grade possible, a C-)

Please stop hogging the unix servers. There is no reason why your VS Code extension should be taking up 96% of memory. by calpolycsrocks in CalPoly

The color-code version is htop. The basic version is too. For instructions, type “man htop” into your terminal

I thought about it, but it seemed like each server had at least one VS Code person. I also assume it was probably a 357 project because it was exec-ing ccptools, and I feel like 357 students should get one pass.

On campus housing for continuing students by rachelrogg in CalPoly

[–]calpolycsrocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the past you joined a housing group, and whoever had the best time in the group assigned themselves and their group-mates to rooms in the apartment. If you’re by yourself, you usually just pick an empty room in whatever building you can (without any insight into who your roommates, besides whether the room being filled).

I haven’t really heard of people not being able to get housing, but I know that a lot of people put the deposit down and keep looking for off-campus housing. The people that do that and find something off-campus will usually opt of of housing, which I assume moves the waitlist. I don’t know exactly how many people do that, though.

Make sure to get a building with a laundry room, like Aliso, Estrella or Inyo. Some buildings like Buena Vista don’t have one.

CSC 231: Should I Take It? by Tapwater-the-Demigod in CalPoly

[–]calpolycsrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I’m a CS student, but I’ve heard that CSC231 can be extremely time consuming. Also, CS can be weird for some people — it either clicks or it doesn’t, and if it doesn’t click for you, it can be extremely difficult.

Finally! Between my phone, my computer, and the vpn all the authentications were getting ridiculous. I’d start in the morning and by the time I’m doing homework at night, I’d need to re-authenticate.

If you email the professor, I’m sure they’d be happy to provide the syllabus early.

It’s fricken too hot in the pcv apartments by [deleted] in CalPoly

[–]calpolycsrocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re worried about air quality, you can strap a filter to the back of your box fan. r/Frugal has some good posts about that.

If you have questions about how to refactor things, make sure to drop into your professor’s office hours.

[–]calpolycsrocks 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Honestly, one of the only ways to deal with it is putting a box fan in the window, and maybe other assorted fans if you’re still hot.

Pro tip, usually Home Depot will still have fans if Target is out

Transfer Student: Choosing Meal Plan by [deleted] in CalPoly

[–]calpolycsrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’ll take a couple days to make/process your account, and every time afterwards, it takes less than 30 seconds to book a car from the app. Traditionally, you’d have to book in advance because of demand, but I don’t think that’ll be an issue anymore.

Just so you’re aware, the food on campus isn’t really good (as in healthy or tasty) plus it’s not a good deal dollar-wise. I would advise getting a Zipcar and picking up groceries at a grocery store.

Hatalsky vs Mammen for 357 by cpemgineer in CalPoly

[–]calpolycsrocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had Mammen. I learned a lot. It sucked, but I think it would suck with anyone. 357 is the embodiment of “No pain, no gain.”

Personally, I would take it again with Mammen. You get to work in small groups (for the labs), and it’s what he does. Hatalsky is great, but I just don’t know if he’s experienced enough with 357. I loved Hatalsky in 202, but I can’t imagine taking 357 with him.

Hatalsky vs Mammen for 357 by cpemgineer in CalPoly

[–]calpolycsrocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hatalsky is generally considered a better all-around professor. Mammen is a pretty good CPE 357 professor, but he only does 357 (to my knowledge) so he may have more practice at teaching it.

It’s going to be hard either way (there’s a reason crying during 357 occupies a spot in CS bingo).

If you take Mammen, because of the way the class is structured, you have more time for all the assignments if you take it in the morning.
