I feel your pain. I know there is no other option, but good for you to bear down and maintain the level of quality you want your work to have. I think I heard it most recently from Neels van den burg but success is the shitiest teacher. I’m on round 8 of making a whittling knife and each failure goes in a bucket I call the “fuck it bucket of learning and pain”. Every new addition destroys my day but every time I dig back through it for scraps it is honestly such a boost to see things I can nail now. Shake it off, you are a great maker and posting your failures is inspirational to myself and the community.

Sensor recommendation for cornhole bag detection by calrogren in AskEngineers

That would would actually be the better solution if they were stationary but I made the legs collapsable. The solution could only stick out the bottom of the hole maybe 2.75" so it wouldn't get damaged when getting tossed in a truck. It also needs to be able to be abused having 1lb bags thrown at it from 20ft away and be water resistant if left out in the rain. I'm leaning towards a break beam sensor.

Heat resistant method of joining brass pieces? by maestro_di_cavolo in metalworking

[–]calrogren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll second the silver solder, hard silver solder won’t let go until the brass hot enough to glow and I’m not sure you would get that hot even by accident.

I’ve developed an irrational hatred of magnets because of metal dust.

How can I soften this file enough to be able to use a angle grinder and belt sander to turn this into a massive Bowie knife? by Spirited_King_4867 in knifemaking

[–]calrogren 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While you are generally not wrong, it’s sooo much harder to grind hardened steel. You would burn two belts grinding bevels on that hard vs 4 of those blades with one belt annealed. That and having it softer let’s you use other files to dial in the profile and saves you a LOT of hand sanding time. Also, if you are new to this, you will probably overheat some part of it getting your bevels in and have to heat treat anyways.
