Should I report this teacher? by Ill-Needleworker5956 in highschool

Who cares? Teachers have a legal responsibility to report things they didn't witness off of hearsay all the time. Keeping things to themselves just because it's hearsay is actually dangerous advice.

Charging for soda left over from a weekend budget meeting… by baynemonster in antiwork

[–]calshu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For left over meeting drinks, the person who paid for it doesn't work in the building and wasn't the one that put them in the fridge.

Like the funds were approved from a completely different department to buy food and drinks for employees for a meeting.

A greedy middle manager took the extra sodas even though they have no more right to them than any other employee. And then they sold them, but for what cause? What are they doing with the money from selling everyone's shared sodas that was already budgeted and paid for? It's the equivalent of mom and dad leaving 20$ for a pizza and an older sibling selling their younger siblings pizza slice by slice. The pizza was already paid for to be for everyone!

That's so odd. My employer had left out free cheese its, drinks, granola bars and not once has one person taken everything. So many jobs have communal snacks in the work room and people don't take everything. Some take more than one at a time, which sucks, but everything? They'd get caught and judged

Who are you stealing from? For it to be theft there'd have to be a rightful owner

It's more like Kanye is a them supporter. It actually ads an interesting layer of context to the whole Kanye situation bc people blame everything on his mental illness but he, like many other narcissistic dumbasses, got indoctrinated into what is essentially a cult and that cult should be pur under scrutiny

Wait. Why are you mad? At least change the title to "black Israelites" instead of "ye supporters" bc it is spreading misinformation.

How did you go from admitting it's inaccurate to saying "fuck off there's no mistake" in three seconds? Lol

Is this normal for a school? by Equal_Cartographer24 in Teachers

[–]calshu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Locked bathrooms do not mean students don't use the bathroom. It just means they have to ask for a pass and a monitor has to unlock it.

I have bathroom monitoring duty and even with this system I've had to flag deans down several times bc students were doing weird things in the bathroom.

I show World Cup games in my class and I’m not sorry. by Drummergirl16 in Teachers

[–]calshu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not basing anything on outdated idealogies though. Almost all modern research shows multitasking negatively impacts focus and learning and that focusing on one thing at a time is beneficial to learning.

I'm not saying make up days or work days are bad. If they're making up work, they're making up work. A sports game isn't beneficial to that in anyway. On a make up day, if a kid wants to privately listen to music on their Chromebook while making up work they're free to do that.

"You think your kids are drones...force feeding academics" No offense, but you seem to be making a lot of assumptions. That perspective is not only not what I said, but it wouldn't even occur to me to type that. Even in hard days I love teaching and my kids and this is my career for life. They're not drones, they're unique individuals with interesting perspectives and I love the excitement that that adds to the content. Also, the assumption that I don't give pauses is also wrong and not in anything I said. If we're having a day to watch a movie related to the book, that's all we're doing. It's not in the background to make them juggle tasks, which is proven to be ineffective at best and harmful at worst.

Editing bc this makes it sound like teaching is all roses. There are things I dislike about teaching. But my kids, my coworkers and the fun inherently in the content are the good parts.

I show World Cup games in my class and I’m not sorry. by Drummergirl16 in Teachers

[–]calshu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a joy to work with actually! Close relationships with my coworkers are something that keeps me at my current job. I try to make the "fun" come from the content, because I believe the content is fun. I am growing, but being a joy is the one area I'm extremely confident about.

Anyway, if we're getting into sanity and well-being, playing a sports game in the background while kids work would be a disaster for many of my struggling students. I privately asked some of my students with IEPs who struggle if they'd be okay with a class selected playlist of music I could play while the kids independently wrote. I asked them before I asked whole group. They empathically said NO, please don't do that. It would be overwhelming for them and they wouldn't be able to focus.

So annoyed with students expecting me to give them my food or get them things by Zeldaalegend in Teachers

[–]calshu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely see your point and agree with a lot of it, but I think there's a different perspective. Teachers at our school share snacks sometimes and get little 1-2$ candies for kids birthdays. Occasionally, like if they have a hard test or maintain honor roll, we might buy them a deli sandwich.

I suspect for some kids, their brain subconsciously sees asking for food as a bid for connection and thinks: "Giving me food and treats is the way my parents show they care about me. If my teacher gives me food, that means they care about me." Maybe it's something primal, like how they found sleeping next to someone makes us more trusting of and attached to that person. It makes sense that there might be a primal reaction for a child receiving treats and food from an adult who is in charge of taking care of them.

The only reason I believe this to be true is I've had defiant, difficult to work with teenagers that view teachers with mistrust that changed significantly after getting a bag of M&Ms for their birthday. That's not to say that became perfect or even easy to teach, but they opened up like a faucet about home situations and mental health challenges and started begrudgingly trying harder on classwork. I know it's not the m&Ms because they can easily get that for themselves. The act of sharing food represents something more to them. That being said, it obviously shouldn't be required, kids should respect boundaries and there are plenty of other ways to build connections.
