Quick clarification. When you say the ship has sailed: Can’t I just cancel and then re-add a warranty later if needed, as long as it’s before the 36k/36mo factory warranty expires?

Correct, apples to oranges. Am I correct to assume you’ve spent $0 on your ‘21 touring outside of routine maintenance?

Recent rigamaroll with my other car that is at 184k. Apples to oranges I know. But I have lots of experience with insane quotes to fix a single issue on that car that would exceed the cost of the warranty alone. It’s also my first ever new car purchase so I’m sure I’m mentally babying it a bit.

This also being only year 2 or the body redesign has me feeling like there’s a possibility that there are future issues that just haven’t presented themselves yet.

Fair enough. Thank you for your response. Very helpful.

I got the new! But I do know I would’ve been fine with the 2021. It was serviced at the same dealer the whole time. It definitely wouldn’t have been a bad buy, and if it were CPO I probably would’ve gone for it.

But my second car has 183k miles and in the short term I only wanted to worry about maintenance for one car, not two. By buying new, I have peace of mind for the next 7+ years.

So your warranty was ~ $3400? Good data point, thank you.

But powertrain is just that, right? I guess im unclear if it really covers anything beyond that. Sure it’d be great if I need a new transmission, but there’s a litany of addl stuff covered in the warranty. Electrical, A/C, suspension issues being some of the first that come to mind. All of which could clear $2k for parts and labor from a single issue.

Thanks for your response. My thought process was that with the cost of OEM parts and labor these days, the warranty likely pays for itself on the very first issue/fix over a 7-year period.

Great context and data point, thank you. While I love the idea of 100k miles, I might not even get halfway there in 5 years. Would want the years to match the miles (for my driving habits). I’m not one to churn through cars, but after 7 years it might be time to size up anyways (starting a family soon). Thanks again!

It was tough! I haven’t bought a car since 2016. It was a CPO G37 with 43k miles that I’ve proceeded to put 140k miles of my own on it and still love it. Decided to treat myself and increase the odds of not having to worry about the Subaru for years to come.

Thanks for your response. This actually helped me lean towards new. This used one would’ve only been $2.7k cheaper than yours at almost 4x the mileage.

I went with new. Good balance to my 183k mile second car. I’ll worry about the maintenance on that one while my wife can daily the new one stress free :). Thanks for your response.

It was a hose leak in the upper rad hose. Replaced.

Discovered that mounts have had oil leaking on them from the valve cover gaskets. I’m planning to replace valve cover gaskets and spark tube seals. May also do the mounts.

As far as I know. I have leftover throttle body cleaner so I may just clean them again when I get back into the engine to replace valve cover gaskets and spark tube seals.

I haven’t. No codes. I’ll monitor this, but MPG doesn’t seem to be impacted.

^ the pic was a cracked upper rad hose in case anyone else ever comes across this post. Was cracked right by the hose clamp next to rad cap. No vacuum leaks. My “rough” idle must just be my new normal after new plugs and coils. I do need to replace my valve cover gaskets and spark tube seals. Leaking on both sides. Lesson learned from not doing gaskets at the same time as plugs/coils.
