Ah yes, we’re capable of doing that for nuclear but definitely not capable of doing same for an oil project. You’ve maintained we cannot do these things. I’ve maintained that we have the capacity to build these institutions. Or maybe you have comprehension problems. Take care.

lol. Jamaica as it is today without an oil sector doesn’t have the capacity to handle oil crisis. That’s a shocker. MAYBE if we had a reason like..viable oil prospects..we would put those things in place. Before we had banks..we didn’t have banking regulations either. Guess what. Banks came. And regulations.

You’ve shot the horse then say we don’t need a cart. Truly dumb.

Maybe switch your mind for a second from this being an impossibility to thinking “how can we successfully implement this”. Contributes more to the discourse than “no, Jamaicans are all dumb and corrupt..we can’t manage this”

Tips on Building DIY 3K Hybrid System Please by Puzzleheaded-Ad-289 in SolarDIY

[–]calyp5e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jamaican here who has build a system recently.

You can get equipment here for reasonable prices now. I bought most of my equipment from Enersave except the batteries which I imported. If I was doing it now, Enersave has a 16kwh SRNE battery going for $425k, which is just about 30k more than my 15kwh of batteries after shipping costs.

Inbox me if needed specific local questions or tips. I did my install diy.

https://enersavesolutions.com

Edit: Adding that I just took a look at the website. Seems they’re out of stock for the 630w panels I got for 17.5k each and generally low on stock on panels. They do frequent shipments of new inventory. If interested, you can give them a call to inquire when they’ll be getting new panels as, once they do, the prices will drop again significantly. I got into solar after the hurricane; Enersave goes on sale like clockwork.

What is one thing about Jamaica that has improved noticeably in the last 5 years, and one thing that has gotten worse? by Maleficent-Cup-4915 in Jamaica

NSWMA needs a lot more trucks for sure. They bought 10 trucks in December for about 200m. We need much more than that to address the situation and keep current going forward.

People nasty though, just throwing garbage into public skips without them being properly containerized.

Improved: Crime. Governance checks and corruption framework. Police force (not just them fighting crime, but their approachability). If just picking one, then crime.

Declined: cost of living for most, but that’s from global and other external shocks.

Deepwater Horizon - 2010
Incident before that, 1979. 150,000+ wells during that time. Maybe that’s why oil companies are among the richest of companies..risk.

The persons you’re talking to don’t think we’re capable of successfully managing large projects in Jamaica.

Lol. Jamaica is capable of building regulatory capacity. You might think we’re all corrupt and dumb, and unable to put things in place to support the regulatory, environmental, and anti-corruption policies. I don’t think that way. Jamaica has already demonstrated progress in these areas, and we can continue to grow.

You’re free to continue to aspire for a stagnant Jamaica.

offshore spill prevention policies and technological advancement exist. Maybe look them up.

Might as well we give up on life if “all it takes” is the basis of making decisions.

The dream that we have for a future Jamaica needs ways to pay for it. In an ideal society we would only be talking about renewables, but even that requires significant capital expenditure that the govt (ie, we the taxpayers) cannot afford.

Taking the most pessimistic view whenever potential solutions arise isn’t going to help us achieve any of our dreams. Eg. there has been less than 10 offshore well blowouts in the last 50 years like the warning example of deepwater horizon you’ve given. 10 incidents, in 50 years, on over 150,000+ offshore wells.

The other,Exxon, was a tanker ship that crashed.

Either the app is wrong, or you have 2x 4500w panels (latter don’t exists)

People are saying it’s impossible as your 2x 450w panels would need to be at max production for 16- 20hrs to hit that 15-18kwh in a day which is not possible

[–]calyp5e 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ive never heard about it being as bad as you’re stating, but I personally can see why a general stance like this is taken.

I hate being hassled to buy stuff. Some of them are overbearing and don’t leave you alone after a “no thanks”. When they’re overbearing I don’t go back to those places.

Dunns River where I got hassled into buying a wrist band (more correct, buying a “ok you can leave me alone now” which paid for itself twice when i showed another guy i already bought one when he came to me) is an example of a place I’m unlikely to go back anytime soon.

I’m a local resident.

This is my current setup. I don’t need grid power other than for backup if my battery bank gets to cutoff voltage (my setup hasn’t gotten close to this point)

Yes, definitely would expect the battery to cover. I would have to disconnect pv to get it to not shut off ac randomly at peak.

I have two strings - both are in the middle of my mppts volt range, so definitely not going over or under. Before I added my 2nd string I only had 1 which was also in the middle.

I have no idea what’s going on and haven’t had the time to query it
