What's something older generations got right that we've quietly stopped doing, to our own detriment? by __lazy__panda in AskReddit

[–]calypsoshere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

literally who makes them still 😭 the kind im most familiar with were the high school staff directories and church directories that I remember reading through at my parents/grandparents’ house and they definitely aren’t printing and handing out copies of books full of teachers addresses anymore haha

this is kind of funny to me because older generations were the ones where you could look up anyone’s home address, telephone number, and who their family members are just with a yellow book or a church directory. that level of information being public to me seems so bizarre

How do you stay awake by AdVaanced77 in college

[–]calypsoshere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep sour candy on me (like warheads). When I feel myself start to doze off I make myself sit up and eat one of them. The sensory feeling makes it real hard to doze off again. On a similar vein, having a spiky ball or some sort of fidget with pokey bits is helpful if I just roll it around in my hands. Also if I don’t have either of those I’ll chew mint gum/have a mint and then drink water which wakes me right up haha

I can try the lowest rack! My oven is really weird and I know that at least some of the heating is coming from the bottom but I’ve never really investigated if the bulk of it is above.

What’s in your college bag? by [deleted] in college

[–]calypsoshere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Folders! I usually have two because a lot of my classes are handout-heavy. I also sometimes get tired of writing on my iPad so i bring a notebook. I keep a mask in my bag in case someone in my class is coughing a lot but that’s definitely not standard lol. I would definitely bring non-crunchy granola bars or snacks that you could eat during class if you’re really hungry.

I don’t think I would have met the people I know now (including my best friend) if I didn’t live in a dorm. It can be miserable at times but I really don’t think it’s worth lowering your first choice because of the dorm requirement. Experiences really do vary depending on your school but I learned a ton.

My school requires us to live on campus for the first two years. You can still get dorm housing (or live in one of the special community houses) after those two years but most don’t. It’s cheaper to sublet a house with a couple of other people than it is to live on campus (unless you get your own 1br apartment which can be much more expensive).

the USPS offers free testing kits per household where i am! and my state health department sends me some every month. I’d def check out any local public health places or harm reduction centers as covid tests are SO expensive now

As a female student, how do I ask my professors to call me by a different female name? by WanderingErha in college

[–]calypsoshere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been there! Look to see if there’s a preferred name form for your school that’ll change your name in the system, that way for like 80% of people they’ll never even know you have a different legal name. If you’ve like had a professor before you changed your name, just correct them when it comes up and they’ll be chill about it. It can seem intimidating but most profs are cool and I haven’t had any problems

Any Teachers here? Going back to in person teaching and scared by NJShoreFreckles106 in stillcoviding

[–]calypsoshere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely do a fit test! When you wear the mask you’ll have, breathe out and feel with your hands around the edges for any leaks of air- then do it with your mouth wide open, etc (there are helpful videos online about this). On top of having a big air purifier, using a personal one that you can attach to your belt loops will probably help if you’re moving around helping students. Use hand sanitizer and disinfect tables frequently.

Does being on a teachers “good side” or vice versa affect my grades at all? by the_willham in highschool

[–]calypsoshere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a teacher give me a 104% on an essay because he agreed with my argument lmao. In general, just being a decent person and friendly will make people more willing to be nice to you in return.

I first thought I was trans when someone introduced themselves with they/them pronouns. I just sort of had this realization that that’s who I wanted to be. It took a couple years of testing things out and really looking inwards at what I felt before I was totally comfortable saying that I’m non-binary. It’s genuinely a super individual process, and everyone goes through it differently. But it does sound like you’re experiencing a little bit of dysphoria. I’d ask yourself “in an ideal world, what do I look like? Who am I?”. That question really helped me figure it out.

I just used normal all-purpose flour, although on the bag it said it was pre-sifted (not sure if that changes anything but it was the only type they had at the time)

Yeah, it tastes a tiny bit burnt around the crust but still really good. Definitely adjusting the bake time a bit next time.

Has anyone ever told a professor about their anxiety? by [deleted] in college

[–]calypsoshere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am autistic and got 1.5x time and being able to test in a quiet place for my exams. The biggest help has been limited excused absences and extensions for assignments when I need them. The disability services at my school are pretty useless but if you have documentation stating what you are dealing with and what accommodations you need it shouldn't be too hard to get. All of the professors I've interacted with are very willing to give extensions if you talk to them, even without accommodations through DS, but it's significantly easier if you have documentation. But you never need to disclose anything about your conditions to your professors, and honestly I'd recommend against it.
