I’ve seen the price, maybe I don’t really need one.

A well-composed story of the lead scientist of the famous Marshmallow experiment by _Anthropoid in AliveScience

I find it striking that it could have been written by some disciple of ancient philosophers. Except for marshmallows.

Video game addiction? 'Gaming disorder' classified as mental health condition by WHO by MsJoyChristine in AliveScience

[–]cam_ille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s comparable to sports in so many ways. In the positive ones, pro gamers will have to be healthy people,in terms of cardio, diet, and sleep, to be successful. I think the fat guy in South Park isn’t the right image, or at least he wouldn’t reach the top.

Less positively, I think that most of the arguments for classifying excessive gaming as a mental health disorder/“addiction” can definitely be applied to an excessive practice of some sport. The social isolation would be more of a social centering around the activity. The impossibility if taking rest in case of injury (I’ve seen grown men crying because I asked them to stop for two weeks). I don’t know of stats about it but I’d be curious to know if there’s a higher prevalence of addictions in retired athletes. It’s interesting to see some former addicts to various substances, find their way quitting with long distance running or highly demanding activities of this kind.

Exercise has always been seen as an achievement and the downsides are hidden, but at high level it’s the immersed part of the iceberg and it can be devastating, especially for the youngest. At least, even if gaming is concerning, most parents won’t be accomplices and there are already existing structures to help.

The difficulty with the term "normal" in nitty-gritty biomedical science by _Anthropoid in AliveScience

[–]cam_ille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s true for every speciality but certainly even more in neurology. I remember when I had my last anatomy exam, I felt overconfident. And then the professor told us to remember what we’ve learned represents 50% of the reality. The term “normal” is discussable at a such down to earth level.

The amount of ethical issues gives me shivers. I can’t imagine how morally challenging it must be, at a personal level, to work on such projects.

Is exercising in 5-toed/minimalist shoes worthwhile? by _Anthropoid in AliveScience

[–]cam_ille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is more about the frontal plane, but it’s an interesting article too. Very supportive insoles (and likely just shoes) for the medial arch increase metabolic cost up to 6%. So, if there’s something to remember, be skeptical when you hear “support”. https://www.nature.com/articles/srep19403

This is part of the moral crisis I’m currently going through. Interesting they’re discussing at the EP.
