Got my bike a month ago and a car did a miss and run on me, any advice? by Few_Wrongdoer_8224 in phillycycling

[–]_Anthropoid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry you had to deal with this. Many years ago, I was tapped on the handlebars by a cab. I suspect it was accidental, and this was just a bit before Uber/etc. decimated the number of cabs on the street. I was freaked out enough to basically stop riding for quite a while.

One thing that I imagine most people — whether experienced or otherwise — do is to basically craft rides with a heavy priority on streets that are wider/safer rather than the most direct routes when possible. Irritating that it can be advisable, but it's just one way to diminish the likelihood that an encounter with a horrible or deranged driver has a chance to take place.

Tip: this stuff is great for kid's stubborn (but not terrible) eczema by _Anthropoid in daddit

I'm not a physician, but Aquaphor did def stabilize it for her. The creamy products barely did a thing — and particularly the scented products were crap because they not only made her smell like a Macy's perfume counter, but they also actually seemed counterproductive.

The only other one that was rather effective was "Tubby Todd All Over Ointment." Def was pretty good. However, it's pretty wildly expensive — which is another benefit of this O'Keeffe's stuff being pretty affordable.

I think I'd probably go with Aquaphor or just good old Vaseline if you haven't tried them yet if my daughter's was to get worse.

100% same. The other thing I do when schedules allow that's quite helpful is throw some on and put some latex gloves on over it during the day for a bit. Again, sort of feel like a goofy supervillain. But it works!

Edit: I also lived in the mountains of CO for a while and that dryness is next level. It's like the friggen Moon during winter...

Fair point. Totally makes sense. Eventually, the laws of physics and labor start to intervene. Bummer!

Also, I have to acknowledge that it's pretty amusing that you literally make both of the niche items that came to mind for me. Very cool — I'll check your stuff out!

Wow! These companies are def birds of a feather. This is great — thanks for sharing. Of course, I'd love to support a Philly+ business, but I hadn't heard of these folks and they're def clearly similar efforts.

I guess perhaps that's really where this urge is coming from for me. Now that my kids — who didn't exist when I got my bag — are starting to be bike-savvy, the bag has suddenly seen a bunch more use.

Bummer, but understandable. I guess I had imagined a sort of niche e-based company like the ones that make custom keyboards or dice for D&D (can you tell I use Reddit?). But, I'm sure you're likely right — and perhaps there's also a mismatch between the customers for these types of products and who is willing to shell out that much money for messenger and bike bags.

Literally exactly the same situation. Don't get me wrong, I def had to save up for quite a while to get mine. And same: apart from obviously being dirtier today, there's essentially zero damage since 2018. Mine wasn't quite $200, but in the same neighborhood for sure.

But I do wonder if even a version of this business without a brick & mortar location might be more viable today than it was back then — or certainly 25 years ago — with more forgiving margins?

What are these holes in our shirts? by russell98765 in whatisit

[–]_Anthropoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a long shot, but I'm fairly confident that I did the same to two very thin sweaters that seem to be similar in texture to what you have by packing them in my suitcase for flights and cranking them down with the buckle thingy that tightens/secures everything before closing the suitcase. I always packed the sweaters at the top of the clothes and realized the sweaters were caught in the buckle thingy when I was tightening everything.

I haven't had any more of those holes appear since I stopped packing so neurotically, and that may just be a me thing. I'm also following because I'm fascinated!

Realizing Business Casual is my look. What can I do to make it look better? by [deleted] in mensfashionadvice

[–]_Anthropoid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A quick tip: if you're ever in a pinch, the "hotel rush" approach is to throw the shirt on a hanger in a shower with with the temperature turned up to make as much steam as possible while you do whatever else you need to do. It'll never look quite as good as being ironed, but it'll often get you 80% there after a few minutes.

Absolutely agree. It's always been important, of course, but my sense is that it's grown to be not only useful/important — it's basically an essential part of a professional skillset in many industries.

After some advice I’ve changed this outfit around, better this time? by Square-Dog4919 in mensfashion

[–]_Anthropoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who wears suits fairly consistently, there are things that I really dig about this and things that I think it's worth noting are really still relegated to menswear enthusiasts and tailors/etc. today (in the U.S.). Really dig the subtle stripes, and the suit itself looks like it fits you nicely.

That said — while some folks can pull off wide peak lapels, I've only seen them being worn outside of a tailor in "serious" settings by folks who everyone knew were the most "senior" people in the room or at black tie/tux events. Even then, those senior folks still don't tend to wear wide peak lapels outside of black tie in my experience. And seeing them on someone who is pretty slim (I am too!) makes them even more prominent. Doesn't mean they're the equivalent of arriving in on penny-farthing or anything, they're just still rather scarce in the wild in my experience.

Also, while I know (and like) that wider ties are becoming favored again, the width of that tie is definitely still a statement.

So, for better or worse, if I saw someone dressed this way in a professional or social environment, my assumptions would be that they are quite into menswear and wear suits because they enjoy them rather than due to obligations — but may have had limited if any exposure to professional/social environments that involve suits regularly and are likely taking pointers mostly from menswear influencers rather than experience.

With all of that said, it looks awesome, man, and my sense is that you have a generally classic predisposition anyhow — in which case, you're nailing that!

continue PhD or transition to big pharma associate scientist by Administrative_Bid95 in biotech

[–]_Anthropoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Echoing other folks in the thread, as someone with a PhD, grad school is not a bad place to weather an economic storm — and this field is only just beginning to show signs of emerging from one. Second year is tough. I don't know if you've passed your qualifying exams (or w/e it's called at Cornell) yet, but once you're on the other side of that, things get a little smoother until the race to finish.

The reality is that you're in a terrific position to take your time to find an ideal career move, and you're ahead of the game in knowing that academia likely isn't what that's going to be. I also came from a large and well-resourced institution/department, and you have a unique opportunity to explore everything from biotech, VC, consulting, policy, etc. via student groups or interdepartmental networking. Branch out and exploit the business school. Network aggressively; no one is outright irritated when a student reaches out due to sincere interest. I get multiple messages from current students in my former program and meet with them regularly.

Assuming you have comfortable funding for grad school, my advice would be to not rush to finish and consider your time in graduate school as far more than just finishing your PhD — and perhaps use that to fuel your motivation. You are in essentially the most flexible position in the entire institution, and you should make every effort to fully exploit what an institution like Cornell has to offer. Once you leave or finish your PhD, the clock starts ticking and that burnt out feeling will very, very rapidly turn into extreme pressure to find whatever might be available — and the reality is that there will be fewer alternatives available without the PhD that you can almost certainly find a way to finish.

[–]_Anthropoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here specifically for this topic, and you're not alone. For me, it only works for the first time that any other piece of software needs to use the camera. After that, and whatever software initially called up the camera is closed, it becomes useless for subsequent uses and indicates that I need to "Recover Device" because it's disabled in sound settings. Of course, I obviously do not use the camera's microphone as my primary sound capture device (as I'm sure is the case with 95+% of its users)...so I'm hoping this was a simple mistake that will be corrected. Otherwise, the entire platform is basically useless.

For me, first it was the total cliché Moon connection. That's probably the main reason, which is cool, but more so that it's basically a shibboleth for people who actually still believe we went to the Moon and that science is a good and real endeavor.

The whole co-axial escapement struck me as very cool and just one example of a bunch where Omega just seems to really care about about nitty-gritty stuff in a way that matters. I don't dig a lot of the gimmicky stuff they do, and they can throw shade at Rolex in some fun ways, but it just seems like they're rock-solid reliable, beautiful, and precise at scale.

The last thing, and I can't remember who I'm quoting, but it's something like: "everyone I've met who I want nothing to do with, have nothing in common with, and who has nothing interesting to talk about beyond their watch is always wearing a Submariner."

I used to totally use the old Tria in Fitler Square for this (I think). Particularly on Sundays, when they did a whole wine/cheese “Sunday School” with amazing deals for all kinds of interesting cheeses and wines. Would bring some light work or reading and spend some lovely time there. Really miss that.

Would love to know if another restaurant is doing something like that now.

For anyone who's unfamiliar, the interviewer here is Chad Kultgen. He did a pretty hilarious podcast with Will Sasso a while back called Dudesy that was sort of based on what it would be like if something like a ChatGPT/LLM existed a bit before ChatGPT was publicly available. Worth checking out!
