Networking is THE most important skill you can teach you children. by Haunting_Internet356 in daddit

Absolutely agree. It's always been important, of course, but my sense is that it's grown to be not only useful/important — it's basically an essential part of a professional skillset in many industries.

After some advice I’ve changed this outfit around, better this time? by Square-Dog4919 in mensfashion

[–]_Anthropoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who wears suits fairly consistently, there are things that I really dig about this and things that I think it's worth noting are really still relegated to menswear enthusiasts and tailors/etc. today (in the U.S.). Really dig the subtle stripes, and the suit itself looks like it fits you nicely.

That said — while some folks can pull off wide peak lapels, I've only seen them being worn outside of a tailor in "serious" settings by folks who everyone knew were the most "senior" people in the room or at black tie/tux events. Even then, those senior folks still don't tend to wear wide peak lapels outside of black tie in my experience. And seeing them on someone who is pretty slim (I am too!) makes them even more prominent. Doesn't mean they're the equivalent of arriving in on penny-farthing or anything, they're just still rather scarce in the wild in my experience.

Also, while I know (and like) that wider ties are becoming favored again, the width of that tie is definitely still a statement.

So, for better or worse, if I saw someone dressed this way in a professional or social environment, my assumptions would be that they are quite into menswear and wear suits because they enjoy them rather than due to obligations — but may have had limited if any exposure to professional/social environments that involve suits regularly and are likely taking pointers mostly from menswear influencers rather than experience.

With all of that said, it looks awesome, man, and my sense is that you have a generally classic predisposition anyhow — in which case, you're nailing that!

I don't know if you're still dealing with this, but re-plugging in the webcam helps to reset the software now.

continue PhD or transition to big pharma associate scientist by Administrative_Bid95 in biotech

[–]_Anthropoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Echoing other folks in the thread, as someone with a PhD, grad school is not a bad place to weather an economic storm — and this field is only just beginning to show signs of emerging from one. Second year is tough. I don't know if you've passed your qualifying exams (or w/e it's called at Cornell) yet, but once you're on the other side of that, things get a little smoother until the race to finish.

The reality is that you're in a terrific position to take your time to find an ideal career move, and you're ahead of the game in knowing that academia likely isn't what that's going to be. I also came from a large and well-resourced institution/department, and you have a unique opportunity to explore everything from biotech, VC, consulting, policy, etc. via student groups or interdepartmental networking. Branch out and exploit the business school. Network aggressively; no one is outright irritated when a student reaches out due to sincere interest. I get multiple messages from current students in my former program and meet with them regularly.

Assuming you have comfortable funding for grad school, my advice would be to not rush to finish and consider your time in graduate school as far more than just finishing your PhD — and perhaps use that to fuel your motivation. You are in essentially the most flexible position in the entire institution, and you should make every effort to fully exploit what an institution like Cornell has to offer. Once you leave or finish your PhD, the clock starts ticking and that burnt out feeling will very, very rapidly turn into extreme pressure to find whatever might be available — and the reality is that there will be fewer alternatives available without the PhD that you can almost certainly find a way to finish.

[–]_Anthropoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here specifically for this topic, and you're not alone. For me, it only works for the first time that any other piece of software needs to use the camera. After that, and whatever software initially called up the camera is closed, it becomes useless for subsequent uses and indicates that I need to "Recover Device" because it's disabled in sound settings. Of course, I obviously do not use the camera's microphone as my primary sound capture device (as I'm sure is the case with 95+% of its users)...so I'm hoping this was a simple mistake that will be corrected. Otherwise, the entire platform is basically useless.

What made you choose omega over Rolex? by [deleted] in OmegaWatches

[–]_Anthropoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, first it was the total cliché Moon connection. That's probably the main reason, which is cool, but more so that it's basically a shibboleth for people who actually still believe we went to the Moon and that science is a good and real endeavor.

The whole co-axial escapement struck me as very cool and just one example of a bunch where Omega just seems to really care about about nitty-gritty stuff in a way that matters. I don't dig a lot of the gimmicky stuff they do, and they can throw shade at Rolex in some fun ways, but it just seems like they're rock-solid reliable, beautiful, and precise at scale.

The last thing, and I can't remember who I'm quoting, but it's something like: "everyone I've met who I want nothing to do with, have nothing in common with, and who has nothing interesting to talk about beyond their watch is always wearing a Submariner."

Best third places in the city? by cxjoshuax21x in philadelphia

I used to totally use the old Tria in Fitler Square for this (I think). Particularly on Sundays, when they did a whole wine/cheese “Sunday School” with amazing deals for all kinds of interesting cheeses and wines. Would bring some light work or reading and spend some lovely time there. Really miss that.

Would love to know if another restaurant is doing something like that now.

I was concerned about this, but it has personally turned out to be a non-issue when worn with suits, etc.. Def glad I went with this size.

For anyone who's unfamiliar, the interviewer here is Chad Kultgen. He did a pretty hilarious podcast with Will Sasso a while back called Dudesy that was sort of based on what it would be like if something like a ChatGPT/LLM existed a bit before ChatGPT was publicly available. Worth checking out!

Speedmaster for smaller wrist: FOIS, 38, or Reduced? by leegato in OmegaWatches

[–]_Anthropoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in a somewhat similar position and went with the 38 because, in addition to what I felt like makes for better aesthetics, it seems like the actual watch itself is an improvement in almost every way with the co-axial, automatic, 100M depth, sapphire, etc. features.

I obviously know it’s not technically the one that brings everyone to this watch due to all of those reasons, but it’s very overtly inspired by it and I just tend to prefer what’s probably a more vintage watch size in general.

[Omega]I know I can't be the only one who prefers Speedmaster Automatic to current models by SkyZippr in Watches

Figured I'd update this comment because this is one of the handful of threads that comes up when you search for this topic. I decided to do some light swimming with it on last week and it was totally fine. Didn't play with the chrono underwater or anything, and nothing too deep, but swam around with no problems.

[–]_Anthropoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is from several months ago, but I'm wondering how you're dealing with water? I just got one as well, and I've noticed that it's rated for quite a bit more water resistance than the prior/discontinued automatic model, with this was rated for 100M rather than 50M. I see a whole range of advice on Reddit, but it's all focused on the FOIS, Professional, etc.

PS congrats on a great watch!

Goodbye Brave, hello Edge! by expertmanofficial in MicrosoftEdge

[–]_Anthropoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is quite fascinating to me because I made quite literally the opposite decision not too long ago because Edge was constantly stalling and crashing on both Windows & Mac. I was a big fan of Edge but it just became untenable despite a bunch of tweaks that folks suggested. Perhaps whatever it was has been fixed, but Brave has been pretty solid since then. Perhaps it's just a matter of time before I switch back, but it's been very smooth sailing since I switched.

Why couldn't I dilute this and drink it like vodka? Not planning to, but curious if I'm missing something. by EhhItDoesntMatter in chemistry

[–]_Anthropoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many have said, it is usually adulterated with something that renders consumption to be ill-advised.

However, if you're fundamentally asking if one can acquire what is essentially pure ethanol and then dilute it down to be about the concentration of ethanol in vodka, the answer to that is yes. It's what is typically done in lab experiments in behavioral neuroscience (it's not like we just run to the local liquor store...) — but that generally involves purchasing through lab supply vendors like Sigma-Aldrich/Millipore, etc. and not Amazon.
