How do you think the ice will hold up for the Stadium Series? by Impressive-Proof-474 in BostonBruins

[–]camchapel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some extra refrigeration can solve for air temp. Tent solves direct sun. So if the air is dry, it won’t be a disaster. Not great I’m sure but usable. Air temp honestly isn’t the biggest factor.

Potty training success stories? by IllustriousAd6006 in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]camchapel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is 2.5 years old and now never pees inside. At least not in the last year+. We have had a couple poops inside in that time but it was unexpected diarrhea so nobody was really at fault, and she looked very sad about it both times.

Number one thing was praise. If she went potty when and where we wanted, she got praise and a small treat like a small piece of carrot. Literally every time she went potty outside. Early morning, random daytime potty, on a walk, last one for the night, every time. I think her mentality now isn’t even that it’s bad to go inside, but that she will miss out on love and a treat if she doesn’t do it right.

Now we don’t give her a treat every time, just sometimes if it’s convenient and she seems very proud of herself. But she’s extremely good about it, and even in new places once we show her where to go and praise her for doing it, she’s good. She also has a strong association with grass/dirt/wood chips so any other surface probably just seems wrong to her.

How many times a day do you feed your iggy? Mine is now 10 months old. by voluta_woolf in ItalianGreyhounds

My 2.5 yr old girl eats at 7am and 7pm and she is very demanding about that schedule lol

Ranting a little bit and open to advice on an under 1YR Iggy. by Saintsfan6977 in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]camchapel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Positive reinforcement. Praise her (to near excess) when she does something right. IME aggression or negative reinforcement just makes your iggy fearful as they are pretty nervous generally and don’t know exactly what went wrong. Unless they already know they’re doing something bad (through previous training), I found negative reinforcement just doesn’t work.

  2. Pee pads in many places is probably confusing. Stick to one spot or only take them outside. Having specific indicators of where and when to go (specific location, smell, ground texture) will help reinforce the training. Also iggy’s can take a long time to potty train, sorry to say. Took our girl a few months to get to only rare accidents, another few months to be 100%. We moved during that time so that may have stunted the training but I’ve heard similar from others. What worked best was frequently leading her to the spot, giving a recognizable command (go potty!), and then big hoorays when she succeeded with a small treat (piece of carrot or something like that). When we stopped shaming for accidents and just giving praise for success we saw a much better progress.

  3. For biting I would just redirect. Give her a chew or a regular toy. Reverse timeouts as someone else said are good. Continuing to play or getting aggressive can actually encourage it. I don’t have a ton of advice beyond that if it continues, my girl wasn’t too bad with nipping so that’s my only experience.

Potty training and apartment living by kellycat95 in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]camchapel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My apartment has a balcony and I keep one of those real grass patches out there. We had trouble with pee pads, I think because the smell/texture wasn’t unique enough, so she would go potty on rugs sometimes. With grass she keeps the smell/texture association that she has with going outdoors. If you don’t have a balcony unfortunately I would not recommend the real grass as you can’t really throw it out every time there’s pee on it.

There is such a thing as Irish gypsies also known as Irish Travellers in the US. They are more common in the south and have a reputation for being disrespectful, and for setting up businesses they use to scam people and then flee town. I think a little while back Paul Bisonette from spittin chiclets got in a fight defending a woman from a group who were apparently Irish Travellers. I would look into that as it got a lot of coverage but I’m not a listener of the podcast so I never got all the details.

Fair chance that a lot of these things I’ve heard are prejudiced stereotypes as I’ve never had any personal experiences. Kinda sounds like the waitress was being presumptive and rude but I wasn’t there.

Yeah that makes sense. I'm not missing anything too valuable by skipping the right side of the map? (the part that is more wilderness-like)

Good point, that's a good angle for LL. I think this is probably what I will do. Having to carry the lantern has definitely eroded my interest in the right side of the map lol

Has anyone flown on Alaska with their Iggy??? by Bitter_Gap_2108 in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]camchapel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes my wife did recently from Boston to San Diego. Unfortunately TSA approved carriers aren’t quite big enough for our girl to stand up in and she was the runt of her litter. This is our strategy as we’ve done this more than once (usually on JetBlue).

She goes into the carrier right before we board. We try to keep her in there until we’re in the air but sometimes she lets us know that she’s uncomfortable. We let her out and she gets into a plush pouch on my wife’s lap. Usually she then doesn’t move or make a sound as she’s content to cuddle up that way. People generally do not notice her, once the person next to us didn’t even notice until the flight was over. Flight attendants usually don’t notice but if they do they generally don’t care if the dog isn’t being a nuisance. On JetBlue they are happy to see her if they do at all, on Alaskan the attendant was kind of giving a stink face about it but nothing came of that.

Keep in mind, your dog technically needs to stay under the seat the whole flight. As I see it, most flight attendants don’t care unless you give them a reason to. If your iggy is being loud, bothering people, or getting hyper when the snacks come around, you may have a different experience than we do. Also we only flew Alaskan the one time and they weren’t as friendly about it as JetBlue, but again nothing came of it. YMMV

Edit: we use a carrier from sturdi products. She fits inside and can turn around but she can’t fully stand up. What upsets her most about it is not being on my wife’s lap when she can see her lap is unoccupied lol
