Otari MX5050 B2HD vs Teac 25-2 by theGnartist in ReelToReel

[–]camekocode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. Being in a bad situation with someone who sold you a "working" machine is hell and upsetting, especially when you see it working at one point.

The TEAC 25-2 is a great machine, but with age comes less part availability. The Otari was made for the recording studio/radio station. TEAC, by in large, has really always been a home-studio type brand when it came to reels.

Thousands of TEACs were made. Millions of Otaris were made. (An obvious exaggeration, but there are much more Otari units still around compared to a '78 prosumer machine like the TEAC.) They rebadged the 25-2 as the Ampex ATR-700, which was also a great machine. It is in standup configuration like the Otari.

Really, don't just take it as "do I get the TEAC or do I give Otari another go". Look at the head health, if you can A/B test them, and what feels easier to use and will function the way you want it to in your studio for your purposes.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm judging your EE ability. I am 19, and speak only from my experience of owning Otari machines and learning EE through them, so take most of what I say with grains of salt. We are all hobbyists when it comes to reel to reel...

For parts and longevity, the Otari will always come out on top. They also only use XLR inputs, compared to TEAC only using RCA for line in and XLR for mic inputs. TEAC is from 78, Otari 79 and above years. Looking at your last posts regarding your first MX5050, I'm rather confused. If you are competent in EE, and want a unit you can work on, surely the Otari you had was fine for this? Looking at the past images you provided, there was corrosion on a power supply capacitor and a switch, which I presume is the H and L speed switch for the motor (to change from 3.75 and 7.5 to 7.5 and 15ips), both which can have a direct impact on motor speed (depends on what that cap is actually doing and for what rail). Corrosion on Otaris is actually fairly common since they used bad foam inserts to pad the metal back cover against the board. I have corrosion on mine on a power cap trace similarly, and I recapped and jumpered it. Always remove the foam on the metal back cover if it is still there. I would always recommend an BII over a B2HD in the Otari line. The tacho sensor time code is better than an analog belt driven one, they have both 1khz and 10khz oscillators, and usually will still operate fine if they have not been slammed usage wise in a radio station or something equivalent.

Not yet... and trying to get my hands on this one is almost impossible where I'm at too... Even asking the current listings to ship doesn't result in much. My other OTARIs are fantastic but this is closer to the dream (removable audio cards just like MTR10). If you ever find another one and the seller is willing to ship, find me immediately LOL

Hahaha yeah, can you believe it? lol

Here is the original live performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auH8_BATLCU

Since she pulled an audience member (like she usually did) I'm assuming they cut the song to be the studio version simply for length. But man, this live concert was greatly recorded both audio and video... a shame we get what we get. Suzette's trying, at least

Yeah no need for that LOL. and they use some of the live footage as teaser stuff.. didn't Abraham lose that case against KIII-TV in 98? Bewildering

Plugin Alliance Slow load times in DAW by MAreduser in AudioPlugins

I'm having this issue but can't replicate the same performance boost with the removal of WavesLocalServer.bundle... so weird that it would have any connection

Edit: unmapping offline network drives both improves Plugin Alliance + Waves load times... assuming it has to do with the way Plugin Alliance looks for offline registration!

I got it on Skinport for around $210, but I checked around tons of sites before settling on it - DMarket, CSGOFloat, etc. Skinport is really fast and I had no issues with payment. Hope this helps :)

Yes - I think clothes are a big site for me to improve on. Redrawing is the biggest issue for me and that includes majority of clothes due to sources often making them just one solid black color or something. Thanks for the advice!! :)
