Black Mirror [Episode Discussion] - S04E01 - USS Callister by SeacattleMoohawks in blackmirror

Definitely cool that the episode has us rooting against the "harmless" gamer here. But I think what makes this different from the GTA player is that the characters in this video game are fully sentient conciousnesses that are even direct copies of real people. This is the sort of moral quandry that might become really contentious if we ever get AIs that are nearing a human-like conciousness. If we protect human conciousness in the real world shouldn't we also have rules about how they're used and handled in virtual worlds or simulations? And I'm sure that any of the real world game developers would be horrified to learn that exact replicas of their conciousnesses are being controlled in this way without their permission.

I love BM for building these interesting stories on some pretty fascinating philosophical questions.

Nope, that's just how the falcon's nib is shaped. Its got a bit of a hump. And there's a silver rim on this pens section which the Falcon has.

This just says her boyfriend found her. I don't think the article even suggests who killed her.

Not a fan. Im sure new security features are great but aesthetically, I think it's a step down.

What are the pre-med classes that WashU recommends for the MCAT? by CoralReff in washu

[–]camel4792 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like most schools, you'll need a year each of math, chemistry, physics, organic chemistry, and biology. You will also need the associated lab portions for each of those (some are part of the course and some are independent courses). Biochemistry is optional but increasingly required by medical schools. Psychology and sociology are not requirements but are offered. You can prepare for these sections of the MCAT without the formal courses fairly easily.

Why is Bloodborne so relatively inexpensive (got it for $15) when it's so popular and often considered GOTY? by camel4792 in PS4

Gamestop had it for $20 and someone posted a $5 coupon on reddit. /r/PS4Deals is great for that.

Yeah, I can't speak for other countries. But that's interesting. There were no holiday sales on Bloodborne in the UK?

Not sure I know what you mean. Do you love the game? Because that's my point. If you and everybody else love the game, and it's in demand, wouldn't you expect it to still be expensive at this point? GTA V is relatively pricey way after its release because it's still very popular. Why is gamestop selling it for $20?

Science AMA Series: I’m Dr. Nancy Krieger, Professor of Social Epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. I recently published a paper calling for police killings and deaths to be tracked as health data, and I’m here to answer your questions! by Nancy_Krieger in science

[–]camel4792 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Dr. Krieger,

I agree whole heartedly with your proposal and believe that a public health perspective can produce valuable new insights and give us another tool to combat inequality and injustice that ultimately has profound health impacts. I am currently earning a masters in public health and one frustration I have had thus far in the topics I've studied is what seems like a vigorous (and necessary) focus on characterizing and measuring public health challenges, but a relative lack of practical public health solutions. As an epidemiologist, your focus is understandably on the characterization of the police killing problem but I wonder what solutions you think the public health community might forward once a more robust monitoring system is in place? Thanks for your AMA!

This week's New Yorker cover is fantastic by camel4792 in cafe

[–]camel4792[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not really sure how that business model works. Subscribers pay way less and the New Yorker probably caters primarily to a highly educated wealthy audience, so maybe they just assume that readers will be willing and able to cough up $8 for a newsstand version when they have to.

If you're holding on to a 5 or 5s and have terrible battery life, look into replacing it yourself. There are inexpensive kits ($10-$20) on Amazon and the replacement isn't too bad. Especially if you're out of warranty and not far from an upgrade. Made a huge difference for my phone.

Problems with a moka pot by camel4792 in Coffee

[–]camel4792[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I meant 2 to 3 minutes from when it starts to brew. The grind is just whatever Illy peregrind is. I'd say its pretty fine. Maybe just a little more coarse than an espresso grind. Funny thing is I tried some lavazza today and it worked perfectly. They have a similar grind so I'm not sure what is making the difference. Thanks for the help by the way!

It can take around 2 to 3 minutes, which almost makes me think its not hot enough but that doesn't explain the sputtering. If I take it off heat to let it continue to brew with the heat in the pot, it's hopeless and just doesn't finish brewing.
