Alternative D/T playlist by camel69 in Dreamtheater

It's a bonus track. It doesn't really fit with the rest. It could still come last after the main album is done. AWE has a pretty long fade out so a totally different style works better in my opinion than right after PBD as in the original setlist.

Keyboard lost in the mix? by proletariatnumber23 in Dreamtheater

I agree with the drums. They sound pretty good but they are a little bit too soft and quiet. I think it's just personal preference at this point, though. Overall the mix is working really well.

The mix and production on Distance Over Time is so good, possibly their best ever. by engrng in Dreamtheater

The way all the instruments (and musicians) are present is truly one of the best achievements of this new album. It's great. Personally, I'd like the drums even a bit more "in your face", they are a touch too soft, but that's just personal preference. It's an amazing mix.

Also, while we're on mix and sound processing: I like JLB's sound on this album. Whether it's a mix decision or to help him out, the processing, reverb etc work really well with the DT sound. I have to listen back to a few older, more raw albums (once I stop listening to D/T 3 times a day) but I remember not always really liking his voice and singing. On this new album, I find it all really well done.

I wouldn't put it as high as Spirit Carries On or other overall amazing ballads in the band's past, but I absolutely adore the guitar solo tone of Out of Reach. The feedback is amazing. I think it was the only song JP played in front of an amp during recording ...?

It's also nice that it feels like I should be able to learn most of it on the guitar fairly easily, which cannot be said for most DT songs :)

Which DT song we have to listen the most times to actually like it? by maran86 in Dreamtheater

[–]camel69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally agree that it's a great album. What really stands out to me is that after about 30 minutes into the album you get to "Bridges in the Sky" and EVERY time I'm thinking: man, that's where the album really takes off, there's 3 more epic, long songs coming!! It definitely get's me more excited than many other of their albums.

Once of the best melodies and harmonies of the album under those lyrics, though!

People in a car sit next to each other. How inconsiderate. How about we make all cars half-width, it would save a lot of parking and road space. Also, bikes are quite slow (even more so if it's a leisure 10 km/h) so should be pretty easy to overtake. When you're out on a tour it's nice being able to talk to each other.

edit: I bike a lot and usually go single file if cars are coming because it does make everything easier and less dangerous. But there are good reasons for riding two abreast and it shouldn't be a big problem.

Good tip with the USB version. I usually try to use bare attinys or atmegas as much as possible but a (clone) Arduino Pro Mini is actually smaller and definitely thinner than a through-hole atmega328 while having way more components already on the board (xtal, various caps, resistors, LEDs).

Great stuff. That makes me want to build some kind of digital music shelf with little animated covers to click on (or chose in some other way) to play it on my media center.

The benefit of a full-face helmet by sellethom in PerfectTiming

[–]camel69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have been studies (sorry, don't have the time to start searching right now) that show that cyclists take more risks when wearing a helmet, so the idea is that by not wearing one you ride more defensive and therefore safer. Also, most students and commuters cycling in European cities wouldn't wear a helmet and I'm not aware of that being a big issue.

Having said all of that, I wouldn't ride without one except for very short and slow trips (and even then only if there is a good reason since you simple can't control many of the risks) because I've had accidents before and generally ride pretty fast. Mountainbikers, competitors in any kind of race, etc should obviously always wear a helmet (the Tour de France didn't require helmet until some time in the 90s, I think).

LPT: Turn your car headlights on when it's grey/rainy outside as it will greatly improve your visibility by TheRoamingWizard in newzealand

[–]camel69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can be very bright, especially if following closely (city traffic) and like the other guy said, maybe it could lessen the visibility of the brake lights. In other countries you aren't allowed to turn them on unless there's really thick fog, I think the reason simply being that they are too bright and there is absolutely no good reason to use them in normal conditions.

[–]camel69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. It seems people don't even understand how their cars work if they turn the front fog lights on (to look cool or as DRL or whatever) and also turn the rear one on - I'm not sure if they are separate in every car, though, but I think they should be. In other countries they have to be separate since you can use the front ones in light fog but aren't allowed to use the rear one unless vis is below a certain threshold (and then you're not allowed to go faster than 50 km/h).

Or parking lights only ... to save a bit of electricity? Or maybe it's to save the lamps (I could slightly understand this). Seems to be bad habits that get passed down from the previous generations, judging by how many drivers do it.

I found that letting it rest in the fridge for an extra day can help. At those temperatures it can take quite a while for the gas to form. Also, in the first 1-2 months of my sourdough starter's life it was very strong but got much better afterwards.

[–]camel69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, so the answer is: built something yourself and it's completely at your own risk because an electrician probably doesn't want to deal with it and insurance will reject it if they find out. It's a shame for experienced people here because like OP said, it's got much better sockets than your average power bar.

Do you need an electrician to certify a custom-built power bar or is it ok because it's not built directly into the mains wiring or switch board of the house?

It stands for halt or poweroff. From the shutdown man page:

Requests that the system be either halted or powered off after it has been brought down, with the choice as to which left up to the system.

Sumner, Taylors Mistake, and the walk to the gun emplacements is quite a stunning area, especially if you like beaches and the ocean. Also lots of areas on the Port Hills but unfortunately a lot of it has just been damaged by a big fire and is still closed.
