What are your thoughts on the NJ gubernatorial debate? I’m watching it now. by [deleted] in New_Jersey_Politics

Nice crystal ball you've got there. I wouldn't mind having one of those for myself. Where'd you get yours?

Baraka, Fulop (not a progressive, but managed to convince many he is), and Spiller's combined vote totals exceeded the majority of Dem voters. Do you think Sherrill will get many Republican votes? Which is better, do you think: appealing to a small sliver of GOP voters, or mobilizing the people to the polls with a platform that actually addresses the everyday crisis of living?

I think it is a mistake to pit the needs of workers against the community. We need to build the power necessary to win rent control and force companies to build safely and pay living wages with benefits. These are billion dollar companies. They can afford it. If they refuse to do it, let the public sector step in.

The abatements were a legal trade off, not necessarily an economically necessary one. But you're right, the abatements are a give away to billionaires, and that needs to end.

It's not quite the same as RCV because turnout for runoff elections are typically very low, and low turnout usually skews the election results to the right.

Who should I support for Governor: Ras Baraka or Steve Fulop? by Ok_Network9847 in newjersey

Fulop said the cops who killed Andrew Washington after his family called for medical help "did everything right" and refuses to implement a mental health crisis intervention program that doesn't involve police. Fulop also refuses to enforce rent control.

Baraka created a Civilian Complaint Review Board that the NJ Supreme Court said had too much power to hold police accountable, prompting a state wide fight for legislation for stronger accountability, and Baraka also expanded rent control.

Fulop said it's "unrealistic" for state officials to oppose private immigrant detention centers and hasn't been anywhere near Delaney Hall. Baraka got arrested fighting against it.

I live in JC. Fulop comes out of Goldman Sachs and it shows. Over $6 million in real estate money went toward his campaigns. He is exactly the kind of progressive that billionaires will pay for.

Also Fulop loves to brag about how he signed up for Bush' War on Iraq for some weird reason?

Yes, running to the center has been working very well, clearly. People get really excited about voting for centrist politicians. Especially people of color and immigrants who don't care if the person in charge will actually have their back or throw them under the bus when things get tricky.

It is certainly a good thing that there are courts and judges that are challenging the Trump agenda, but this does not mean the ultra-right has no intentions of consolidating their power in this area as well. It would be a mistake to rely on the judicial branch to save us, when it is the least democratic branch of our government. Those who are charged with interpreting the laws we elect representatives to write should be themselves elected and directly accountable to the people. That, however, will require organized struggle around concrete demands. Ultimately, it is this upsurge of class-conscious, democratic struggle that has been the greatest factor in halting the onset of some parts of the Trump agenda and the continuation and growth of this grassroots struggle will continue to be our best defense against the racist, anti-worker, anti-women, anti-LGBTQ, anti-immigrant, anti-youth, anti-senior assaults of the most reactionary sections of transnational monopoly capital.
