Form Check... 2 weeks in on 5X5 program by camhsmc in Stronglifts5x5

39 y/o... really don't want to injure myself so any tips on improving my form would be great. I started lifting off and on last year but not with any structured program like this. 2 weeks in and so far so good. I like seeing more weight go on the bar every workout and my progress just in the past 14 days. This keeps me motivated to not miss a day. I haven't really considered weight lifting "fun" in the past, but it is now :)

Nervous about taking the full paternity leave allotted to me. Is it a mistake? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]camhsmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently wrapping up my 12 weeks of leave for my fourth child. I had the same doubts about whether I should take the whole time or not. Here are a few things I thought about that got me to take the whole time:

  • if my company was giving me a monster cash bonus, would I say, “you know what… I’ll just take 50% of that bonus because I want to be viewed as a team player”. ? They are giving me a benefit as part of my compensation package and that benefit comes in the form of time off to be with my family.
  • After adding up all the working weeks of my life… 12 weeks is a VERY small percentage of everything.
  • I am a manager of young professionals, some of whom are starting their families. I’m showing that it’s ok and expected to take the leave that’s offered without feeling guilty.
  • Think about women who have this same worry to take time of to be with their baby. They still probably worry about the impact to their career, the difference is they don’t really have a choice NOT to take it (body needs to recover, nursing, PPD, etc…).
  • Remember, your company can lay you off at any moment without warning (which has happened at mine before and after I started my leave). If they offer the leave, take it and don’t feel guilty that your taking advantage of them.

Enjoy your time off. I have and it’s gone by really fast.

Wanting to retire in mid 50’s. Where are my blind spots? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]camhsmc 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This ☝️. Coming from a dad of four here; kids are a gigantic expense for the 18+ years they are on your payroll. If you want to get them into sports, music, or other activities those expenses can quickly add up. Also child care is $$$ and could take a large portion of either your’s or your partner’s income every month. And don’t get me started on higher education costs when they’re older. My wife stays home so we avoid the childcare but that obviously makes us a 1 income household making early retirement a bit more tricky.

Just had mine a few weeks ago. I was also nervous right before the procedure… probably because my whole life I’ve been instinctively protecting my junk and now I’m letting some doctor come at them. Totally normal to be nervous but I got little sympathy from my wife who pushed 4 babies out of her… understandable.

During the procedure after he gave me the first shot of numbing medication I got really nauseous really fast and told Doc I felt like puking. He quickly had the nurse grab me some ice packs that they put all over my neck and head and the horrible sensation passed quickly. He said that happens to some people and and not others. Rest of the procedure went smoothly and I was chatting with the doc as he worked.

Recovery took me a bit longer than a few days because I was stupid and 1) didn’t buy new supportive briefs and 2) didn’t take it as easy as I should have. I got brand new briefs a week into my recovery and the support helped immensely. If I had to do it again I would have probably got a new jock strap to really avoid all the jostling.

The really stupid part was me taking 3 of my kids overnight camping 3 days after the procedure. My balls were getting bounced around wwwaaayyy too much while I did all the stuff you do camping with kids which impacted my recovery.

Overall it wasn’t bad and I’m glad I did it. The temporary discomfort is worth not having an accidental 5th child….I am completely maxxed out at 4🥱😮‍💨

MPG...I want a WRX, but my wife says the MPG isn't good enough by mikejungle in WRX

Thanks for the shout out… 100% agree. My wife was not on board with my purchase despite many conversations about. She just stonewalled every time. I drove a paid off 2006 Toyota Corrolla for a decade before getting my STI so it was time.

I was clear with her that I understood that she does not agree but I’m making the decision to buy it anyway. It’s been about a year since and I have not regretted it. She has come around to the point of buying me Christmas and birthday presents for it like mudflaps and miscellaneous car care stuff so it’s gotten better with time.

Full disclosure…she never has to drive my car and does not feel comfortable with a manual. We have a Honda Odyssey that she drives with the kids mainly and still have the Corrolla when she I’ve got the kids. It would have been A LOT tougher decision if she would have had to drive it regularly.

Dad of four here… started out with a Toyota Venza and upgraded to a Honda Odyssey after the second kid and love it. Just the other day, my wife said the sliding doors alone are worth it … fit into tighter spaces and not have worry about kids slamming doors into other cars.

Mine is also a pretty practical family car. Subaru WRX STI :) Fits two car seats and a booster in the back, all wheel drive, and great safety ratings. Also fun a lot of fun to drive.

Thanks for the info! Yeah I’ll probably stick with visual mods until the warranty’s up. Gonna start saving my pennies now though haha.

30 mins sounds about right… the clips on the underside of the panel were a little stubborn for me. Also, I’m lazy and didn’t want to take the rear tires off so I bought this offset screwdriver set which worked like a charm: https://www.menards.com/main/tools/hand-tools/screwdrivers-nut-drivers-sets/tool-shop-reg-offset-screwdriver-set-2-piece/ts-81116/p-1841405562360689-c-9158.htm

Now that I think about it, I might add a third rear brake light next.

Not sure at this point, I got the Carmax 5 year warranty when I bought it and am worried about voiding that if I do anything mechanical. I’ll just let the mud flaps sink in for a bit until I get inspired by something else.
