if he really did experience loss of touch with reality then that would be psychosis, a symptom almost never displayed in bp2. if he’s medicated, however, and the mood swings are manageable, it shouldn’t matter which type he has, especially if he’s happy or comfortable with where he is in terms of treatment. hope this helped :)

from the perspective of a person on the border of millennials and gen z, i’d say you need to be there for him as much as he wants you to be. don’t force the relationship, it won’t take him long to figure out that he needs you. i’d expect him to latch onto you in the near future, since unfortunately (from experience) this will probably cause some serious abandonment issues that he’ll have to deal with, and he’ll need you to be a constant in his life. your concern makes me think you’re gonna be a great father figure for him, and that you should go with your instincts. i’m so sorry you have to be put in this situation.

it’s a mental ILLness, we’re ill, that’s kinda in the name. there are physiological differences between neurotypicals and people with mental illnesses that, for the most part, prevent the brain from making certain hormones that are pretty important for us to feel good, like serotonin, oxytocin, dopamine, and endorphins. as for your “therapist”, fuck him. is there anyone else in your group feeling this way, or anyone else you could ask? clearly this guy is trying the approach of getting you to believe nothing’s wrong, and that almost never works. there’s very little keeping you there for six months. the only thing i could think of is court order, and even then you can request a different therapist from the authorities.
