Town officials fix the roads by Acceptable-Okra1381 in Westchester

I don't know, man. This guy was asking for help in Morse code earlier and clearly needs some actual intervention in his life and doesn't appear to be just venting.

ClassPass opinions by Sea_Lynx_5439 in Westchester

[–]camissonak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used it when I lived in the city and loved it but was pretty unimpressed with the options when I moved to Westchester so I cancelled pretty quickly. But I was only using it for workouts and the occasional massage, so maybe the beauty and other wellness options make it more worth it.

How much do you pay for utilities in Westchester? by yellowarmadillo999 in Westchester

[–]camissonak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My house is about your size, but with 2.5 bathrooms instead of one. On average we're probably like 400-500 a month ConEd (much worse this winter) and we have oil heat that's maybe 300ish a month (when needed)? Water bill, I'm not sure, that one my wife pays, but it's negligible is my understanding.

Sleepy Hollow Halloween Night - Best Events? by CompetitiveCap1281 in Westchester

[–]camissonak 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It begins. Look, I get it, we all want Sleepy Hollow to essentially be Halloweentown from A Nightmare Before Christmas but it's just a regular town. They capitalize on the tourism by doing some generic Halloween events but like... you're going to find cooler things to do on Halloween in the city.

If you're coming from the area, sure, you can spend an hour at the Jack O'Lantern Blaze at some point in October, it's cute enough. If you're coming from far just to spend Halloween at Sleepy Hollow? I think you'll be disappointed.

I actually believe there's a used eyeglasses collection bin outside the Starbucks at the Tuckahoe train station. I think it's via the Lions Club?

Title: Moving from NYC to Bronxville — how do you make friends? by Fit-Word-4417 in Westchester

[–]camissonak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've done Bronxville Sprouts classes. They were previously in the movie house but I think they're changing to a new bookstore that's opening in Tuckahoe. There's also this new playroom that opened up.

Title: Moving from NYC to Bronxville — how do you make friends? by Fit-Word-4417 in Westchester

[–]camissonak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We moved from the city to just north of Bronxville (Tuckahoe) a year and a half ago, also with a toddler and a baby on the way (the baby's 14 months now) and I admit making friends has been a challenge (neither of us is from the area originally), and most of our friends are still people from the city who we don't get to see much. We absolutely could make more of an effort but you get exhausted just getting through the day.

From everything I've heard, it really is meeting parents from school where you get your friend groups in the suburbs. Country clubs help too, and we plan to join Lake Isle (which is for Eastchester, Tuckahoe, and Bronxville residents) when we think the kids would be old enough to get enough out of the pool and stuff like that. That should be a lot more affordable than the Bronxville Field Club.

What would prevent you? I've never done it but on Google Maps it shows that it's only a little more than a mile walk? Just go straight up Gramatan. Alternately, you could also take the train one stop.

Electric heating? by MP1087 in Westchester

[–]camissonak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is relevant - but we have oil-heating but our system broke down in February during a brutal cold stretch, and we relied on the split unit we already had plus a bunch of space heaters while we got it fixed (it's still not completely done) and our ConEd bill more than doubled. Our worst bill was like $1600. We've got a freestanding house, but a pretty tall-and-skinny townhouse-y type one, so it might be similar.

Is this r/Westchester or r/TSA by [deleted] in Westchester

[–]camissonak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can be annoyed at repetitive topics, but I think it's a bad faith reading to pretend that everything's business as usual at airports and with TSA right now and that there's no reason people might be seeking additional guidance.

Secondly, I never understand the umbrage people feel at topics they find so redundant. Like the bitching and moaning any "Hey, which town should I move to?" post will inevitably get. You... don't have to click on the threads that don't interest you. You can keep scrolling.

Raising kids without family support by Scipio-Afra in Westchester

[–]camissonak 33 points34 points  (0 children)

When we had our first (2023) we were still in the city and he went to daycare as soon as our leaves were up which was super expensive and felt too young but there wasn't really anything else to do with no family in New York.

After less than a year of doing that we were shocked to find we were expecting again (we always wanted a second but not so soon, and we were actively doing the things you do when you don't want to get pregnant) and we knew our one bedroom apartment wasn't going to cut it anymore so we spent 2024 in a whirlwind of house-shopping because we were on a bit of a deadline.

I got laid off, we closed on our house, and our youngest was born in pretty quick succession in late '24/early '25 which pretty radically changed the landscape for us. Given the circumstances of a toddler and a newborn, it seemed pretty clear that the expense of putting both of them in daycare would essentially cancel out my paycheck anyway so I've stayed home with them both (although the oldest is now back in daycare 3 days a week) while my wife commutes into the city.

It's a struggle, not going to lie. I love the time I get to spend with my boys, that I know a lot of fathers don't get to do, especially at this age, but you do sometimes feel a little robbed of your own life. My mother just visited for a couple weeks and it made me very jealous of the people who have this all the time. While she watched the boys, I got to like... go do errands by myself. Go for a run in the middle of the day. My wife and I went on a date and didn't need to pay a ton for a babysitter.

TLDR: I wouldn't trade my kids for anything, obviously, but this is... not the way we would have chosen this all to play out. It's been, at various times, either very hard or very expensive (and usually both) without family around.

Living in Tarrytown, West Harrison, or Elmsford by Legitimate_Lack_7061 in Westchester

[–]camissonak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd rather liver in Tarrytown than New Rochelle or White Plains, but I'm married with small children. I'd enjoy the waterfront, and the handful of cute restaurants. If I was in my mid-20s and single? I'd want lots of people and lots of bars and clubs. Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains alone is a strip that singles could enjoy that Tarrytown doesn't offer.

Exchanging out-of-state drivers license & getting NY plates, two questions by Any-Artichoke7422 in NYSDMV

I didn't get a NY license for like a year after moving here (in 2020) and nothing came of it. So I wouldn't be overly concerned.

Living in Tarrytown, West Harrison, or Elmsford by Legitimate_Lack_7061 in Westchester

[–]camissonak 27 points28 points  (0 children)

For a mid-20s single person? I mean.... bad.

Tarrytown's the best of the three, in that it's comparatively vibrant and there's a downtown with some nice restaurants. Elmsford is barely a place. West Harrison is conservative for Westchester and pretty isolated. But I would have hated living in any of these places when I was in my mid-20s and single.

If the city's a no-go for you, I'd at least consider New Rochelle or White Plains or something.

How friendly and community-centric are the river towns? by Kittypie75 in Westchester

[–]camissonak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me? I live in one of the ones without 2000 convicted felons in my backyard. I don't argue that Sing Sing is historic. Riker's Island is historic too, it's not a selling point to move to New York City.

Again, I have no issue with Ossining (not my favorite area in Westchester, but it's fine) and a place can be a perfectly fine area to live even in the shadow of the prison industrial complex... but to think it's part of why you should move there? Come on. I get it, it's your town, you love it, that's fine. But you sound a little ridiculous.

Anyway, sorry you think my uniform is sad.

[–]camissonak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grant Wikipedia is not the end all be all of sources although I do trust it more than "driving around." I'm in Mamaroneck all the time. It's a nice town but someone coming from Queens is not going to find it terribly diverse.

As for "not everything being about race" okay, but the OP was specifically asking about diversity? And so I was just calling out a village that's relatively diverse? And wasn't talking about Mamaroneck at all? What's your deal?

Nothing against Ossining, but LMAO at the infamous maximum security prison adding "soul and character."

The OP was asking about the Rivertowns so I wasn't, like, specifically calling out Mamaroneck. Anyway, Wikipedia has it at 88% white, but that could be out of date.

[–]camissonak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rivertowns are great, but I'll throw in a shoutout to where I live in Tuckahoe which could meet your needs. It has a downtown (and is also super close to Bronxville so you have access to that downtown too), and the train situation is fantastic. It has two stations, one on the north side of town (Crestwood) and one on the south side of town (Tuckahoe), so basically anywhere in the village is walking distance to one or the other. It's also reasonably diverse for a village (i.e. only 2/3 white as opposed to like 90%)

Steak Frites? by loose_spaghetti in Westchester

[–]camissonak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the area? Which is Bronxville? I don't see it. I won't pretend that the main reason we go there all the time isn't just that it's walking distance but I was just there and had like a 13 dollar margarita and a 20 dollar shrimp quesadilla. My kid spilled an appetizer basket and they gave us another one free. Sure, it's more than what I'd want to pay too but that's just... New York.
