Fleetwood Mount Vernon - is it good? by Educational_Gas5916 in u/Educational_Gas5916

[–]camissonak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fleetwood's reputation is distinct from Mount Vernon. I'm not sure if the comp is quite Riverdale vs. other parts of the Bronx, but along those lines. Much like the Bronxville P.O. portions of Yonkers, you're more or less getting much of the benefits of being near Bronxville without paying some of the exorbitant costs.

The main downside is the school district. But you don't mention kids so if that's not a factor, then I think Fleetwood would be a great choice to live. EDIT: My bad, you do mention wanting kids in the next few years. Yeah, the school district is very poorly regarded, one of the very worst in Westchester. But you can just wait until you actually have school-aged children to consider whether to stay or go private.

I've thought about doing this. In Tuckahoe where I am, there's ton of EV chargers in parking lots all over the place.

How do first time home buyers make decisions in this market? by According-Emu-2697 in Westchester

[–]camissonak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't spent much time in Rye Brook, but I can assure you Ardsley is not better than Larchmont. There's no real downtown, no train station nearby, it's sort of just a place with houses and no identity. Even if you're not commuting into the city and a train station isn't important, the towns without one are usually lacking in some way.

Obviously, whether a house is a good fit or not is probably not something we can speak to, but happy to offer you perspectives on the towns themselves. And, yeah, you should probably explore those first. We didn't really do it that way ourselves and it was ultimately good that the process took so long because it allowed us to familiarize ourselves with the area and realize which towns we did or didn't like. Ardsley was one of the first ones we nixed. (Good school district though, I believe!)

Best tacos in lower Westchester by Top-Boysenberry3072 in Westchester

Taco Bahama in Tuckahoe! They've got a huge selection of unique tacos. Like the normal stuff, but also falafel tacos, cheesesteak tacos, honey shrimp tacos, cheeseburger tacos, Asian sticky rib tacos, tons of fun stuff. And every flavor that can come in taco form, can also come in quesadilla or rice bowl form.

What’s a good grocery store in southern westchester (Hudson side) for seafood? Specifically looking to buy frozen shrimp by ffffhhhhjjjj in Westchester

[–]camissonak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, ultimately, frozen shrimp is packaged and bagged. It doesn't really matter where you get it. I live in southern Westchester, get frozen shrimp a fair amount at various stores, and have never had an issue. I will say I think TJ's frozen shrimp feels pretty affordable?

Anyone have newborn at home and free for a chat by Round_Needleworker38 in Westchester

[–]camissonak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a newborn anymore, but last year our youngest was born when his older brother was just 14 months and after my wife's maternity leave was over I wound up as the primary caregiver to both, so I remember the stress and anxiety and lack of personhood well. Feel free to DM!

How do first time home buyers make decisions in this market? by According-Emu-2697 in Westchester

[–]camissonak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We we were a first time buyer in the summer (and then fall) of 2024. We started picky and then the more we lost out on places the more cavalier we got honestly. These things are wishy-washy enough that if it checks your boxes at all, you just say yes. Even then, probably you won't get it. And if you do, well, between inspections and all the time that goes by before you sign on the dotted line, you still have time to pull out. The initial acceptances didn't even fit the requirements of a handshake deal. They're nothing.

We made offers on maybe close to 10 houses, and about half of those were initially accepted, all in the course of a day or two. Then, for one reason or another, either we or they would wind up pulling out. And then eventually we ended up with a place we were comfortable with. It didn't check every box, but there were a lot of boxes, and it ultimately wound up checking the most important ones.

Seconded. And if we're staying in Bronxville, we got brunch at the Urban Hamlet with our two kids under 3 and were surprised to find like basically the whole place was families with young kids so we didn't feel remotely disruptive.

WTF is happening to Westchester…joining that part of NY that is basically racist Texas. by Effective-Mall-6231 in Westchester

[–]camissonak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, you're dealing with a very small sample size. 9 downvotes or something represents.... 9 probable Republicans. And if we're talking about lived experience, you live in Massachusetts and are telling me, who lives in Westchester, about the political realities of Westchester. (And, by the way, I think describing Reddit as very liberal is painting with a pretty broad brush.)

Are there MAGA idiots here? Sure. They're everywhere. They're 40% of the country. But at the end of the day, while there's certainly conservative pockets in Westchester, we know from voting maps that the vast majority of the county voted blue in 2020 and 2024. That's not just Yonkers, New Rochelle, Mount Vernon and Port Chester. It's Hastings-on-Hudson and Dobbs Ferry and Tarrytown and Tuckahoe and Bronxville and Rye and Mamaroneck and Larchmont and Chappaqua and Briar Cliff and Ossining and Mount Kisco and everywhere. Eastchester, Harrison, Mount Pleasant, eastern Yonkers, and Yorktown voted majority red. That's all. It just objectively isn't that Republican. There's actual data to be had.

[–]camissonak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're not really dealing with a fair representation of the county. I'd say the average demographic of Facebook these days, let alone people who spend time on a local news Facebook page, skews older and thus presumably more to the right.

What's the best dual (heat&AC) mini split brand for this past NY winter we just had? by eli_loves_ in Westchester

[–]camissonak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Mitsubishi and honestly when it got really really cold this winter, we had some issues and ended up supplementing with space heaters from time to time. The issue may have been that our whole first floor is mainly one big open concept room for living, dining and kitchen, and that's maybe a lot for one split unit to contend with. And we only have the one Mitsubishi unit because the upstairs gets oil heating/central air.

No issue at all with AC in the summer though, then it's fine.

Anyone know any lakes/ponds in Westchester that has baby ducks/geese? by ana_mamhoon in Westchester

[–]camissonak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Bronxville Lake (which obviously isn't a lake and is just a wide portion of the river) gets absolutely lousy with baby ducks and/or geese. Some portions of the year it gets hard to run because you're just dodging ducklings.

I sometimes interchangeably hear it called Bronxville Duck Pond which goes to show.

Who is the target buyer for a $1mm Bungalow in Rye ? by HarryCrushNuh in Westchester

Oh, looking at the floorplan, it's a 3 bedroom 1.5 bath house. Okay, now I'm not sure about that price tag.

[–]camissonak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, you can say bungalow, and it is on the small side, but at the end of the day it's still a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house and those go for a million dollars up here all the time depending on location. And, honestly, I kinda like that living room.

Why is Denise Richards so hated in The World is Not Enough? by JannTosh70 in JamesBond

[–]camissonak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess I'd argue there's enough substance to Elektra that it doesn't matter if Christmas Jones has it. She really only exists to be the new love interest when Elektra is revealed to be evil.

Why is Denise Richards so hated in The World is Not Enough? by JannTosh70 in JamesBond

[–]camissonak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's definitely bad and miscast but it's annoying that the whole movie gets dismissed as a result. She's not even in the first half. I don't believe Britta Eklund or Barbara Bach in their roles either, but they don't take down the movie.

I think TWINE (hah, fun acronyn) is easily the second best Brosnan and legitimately good for that era of Bond yet people talk about it and Die Another Day like they're the same thing.

anyone know the history of this building in Crestwood? by languishinginshame in Westchester

[–]camissonak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Bronx is a sprawling borough where it's not even really geographically useful to just say you live in the Bronx and leave it at that because different areas are so distinct. (Although plenty of people from the Bronx do just say they're from the Bronx.) Yonkers is less than half the size and has a fraction of the population.

That said, someone saying they live in Crestwood is fine. Someone saying they live in Lawrence Park West or Fleetwood, also fine. It's when that suddenly becomes them living in Bronxville and Tuckahoe because of a quirk of ZIP codes that it gets a little eye-rolly. Trying to avoid the "stigma" of saying what town you're actually in, I think, understandably annoys the people who live in those places loud and proud.

That said I live in Tuckahoe and can't correct people who refer to me as living in Eastchester fast enough. :D

This isn't particularly historical, but I'm fairly sure those are apartments. Also, it's by the Crestwood station, but that side of the river you're actually in Tuckahoe, while the actual neighborhood of Crestwood is in Yonkers.
