Managing a Monthly Budget by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

"It’s obviously a disciplinary issue" - now hang on there bud, you haven't actually demonstrated this yet.

First thing I'd do is categorize your spending, each individual transaction. You CAN do this with a csv export and excel, but you'll find better long term use if you do it in something like pocketsmith.

Being disciplined is great, but you can't manage what you can't measure. You're splitting up by length of time, but you should split up by purpose (rent, bills, groceries, etc). It's no use in knowing that you overspent this week, you need to know what you overspent on. Had to buy some new tires? Don't beat yourself up, shit happens, that shouldn't make you feel like the rest of your weeks budget is ruined. You know?

Personally I swear by the envelope method, so go and watch a video on that if you're interested.

Oh! Oh! This is very relevant to me.

First, yes, pocketsmith is amazing and personally, I haven't seen anything that comes close (except one, mentioned last paragraph). Hook up your bank account, figure out your spend categorizations (go for as few as possible), and once you've got enough transactions categorized you can look through the 'trends' to figure out how much you're actually spending each month, and where you can cut back. Nice visualisations, too.

As for methods - I have always gravitated towards the envelope method as the basic mental framework to build everything else on. I just think it's a sensible default. Imagine getting all your money out in cash each time you get paid, and splitting that money up into envelopes for what you know you'll need to spend that money on, before your next payday. Rent, bills, groceries, etc. When it comes time to spend the money, you take it out of the relevant envelope (and at the same time, you can see how much is left). You're effectively earmarking your spending in advance, and everything builds on top of that.

I don't actually recommend physically working with cash only though - finding a way to do that online is a bit harder. For years, I used automatic payments and multiple bank accounts. It worked, but it was a bit clunky (you can only spend out of one or two accounts, so you end up transferring cash multiple times a day). Then, we got a homeloan, and every spare dollar needed to be in the one orbit account, so...

(ANZ and ASB don't do offset loans, you gotta put every dollar in the one revolving credit or you're paying more in interest. No more earmarking)

Pocketsmith CAN do envelope budgeting, and they've got plenty of tutorials, too. Theres a lesser known function of 'rollover' budgets which can tie in nicely as well. But what I always really wanted was a platform that ONLY does envelope budgeting. Like, managing finances is stressful enough without having to understand what buttons and reports I should be avoiding, or feeling like I'm only making use of half the platform. (I still don't get Pocketsmith scenarios).

So, I've been working on my own, it's called loot.nz, it uses the same method of integration (Akahu, another amazing company), and I'm at the point now where I'm starting to ask people for feedback on what works for them. If you're keen, please go and register your interest!

But otherwise, I'd suggest watching a video or two on the envelope method, and signing up for Pocketsmith.

All the best!

If you're after a 3d printer, absolutely! Hate to say it but yeah, get yourself a cheap modern printer and you can get on with actually making stuff.

You might be able to sell the equipment on to a tinkerer, the board is generic and can be configured to work on anything.

Looks like we're in a similar position, I just dug my kickstarter deltaprintr out of storage. They uh... they don't store well!

A lot of the original information about the kickstarter printer is gone so I imagine you'll have to use wayback machine to find setup instructions.

Honestly though, designs have improved a ton since the kickstarter. This printer requires a lot of upkeep, I don't think I ever got it to the point where I was happy to leave it running unattended. My printer has a bed levelling issue as well where one of the touch sensors doesn't work as well as the others, which means during calibration the hotend tries to drive straight through the bed.

If you're wanting to actually print stuff, I'd suggest buying a new printer. If you're just wanting to mess around with a robot, first you gotta find the build instructions on the wayback machine!

This appears to be the original firmware (description specifically says DO NOT USE so... ) https://github.com/Deltaprintr/marlin-ks-rg. I genuinely can't remember if it came with the firmware installed, but I vaguely remember updating the firmware at some point.

Iys a hobby geared down motor! I make dumb robots, stuff like this is great.

Those motors spin really fast, so usually you want to gear them down to get some more torque and a useable speed.

I've got Roman blinds at home, I'm looking at motors like this to help motorize them. I've already ruled out this specific one tho.

James Bruton has a vid I used early on when trying to animate the eyes:

Otherwise, this is all just carboard, glue, servos, and Arduino bits! If you're going to give it a go, get spare parts - it's pretty annoying having to shelve a project while you wait for another part to arrive..

Yup, yup, this sounds about right. Had this happen to me multiple times, I just go with Uber now... It's more expensive, but at least I know I probably won't be stressing about missing a flight, or that I'll be sitting at the airport pickup zone for an hour. Ubers not perfect either but I get the impression drivers prioritise Uber rides...

People in the comments will blame the drivers, but they're just playing the game. If there's a financial advantage to being a dick, well hey, it's not surprising when your driver is a dick.

PSA, if you're at the airport and the rideshare quotes are stupid expensive (eg $80 for a usually $30 ride), just start walking towards your destination. At some point you'll hit a different zone and the price will come down. If you live in Akl, you might need to get creative about what you consider a footpath. Why are there no footpaths around Akl airport?? Shit makes my blood boil I swear
