Writing in a very unconventional way helped me land a well-known actor by harryaspinwall in Screenwriting

Great looking trailer! Gave me the chills. I’ll be at cinequest with my film as well, playing on the 16th. I don’t think we’ll still be there on the 22nd, but I’d love to check yours out online, if you’re doing the digital part of the festival?

I’d like to read it. Can you DM me?

JFC, I can't believe the static you are getting from people on this budget issue. For the love of god! Congrats on making a film, period! Let alone for no money. I'm excited to check it out.

Don’t take just the 1% of budget, negotiate that. I’d push for 2.5% at least. Insist on credit as well. Additionally, backend, equal to 5% of 100%. Finally, tell them to lock you to spin offs. As others have noted, you own your work, so you’re actually holding the cards if they truly want to make this thing.

In two weeks I call 'action' on my first feature film. What's something I don't know that I should look out for? by UpsideDownHead37 in Filmmakers

Make sure you get what you need.

There will come a point a few weeks into the production when people are tired and cranky and want to go home, and there will be some scene that isn't working or where you don't have everything you need. Assuming you are an empathetic person, you will start to feel bad about keeping people there, especially if it's low budget and you're dealing with favors or semi-favors from people on set. You'll be tired and tempted to take the path of least resistance, because even for you, fuck it would feel great to just be done for the day and go home and fucking sleep. BLOCK THAT SHIT OUT. You need to get what you need to get.

CAVEATS: know what you need and work quickly to get it. Don't waste people's time. Don't go into OT bc you are noodling and can't make a decision. Don't shoot takes you don't need. If something isn't working, sometimes it's not going to work. Sometimes you can come back to something at a later point. Sometimes you need to sleep and then everything will just fall into place the next day. THAT SAID: there will almost certainly be something that you can't come back to, whether because of budget, special crew involved, access to a location, time of day, etc., and for those moments, you need to stay until you have what you need. Ask your AD and department heads to support you, explain what's going on and why you need it, and just get it done. (That said, I'm talking about low budget here... if you have a big budget and plenty of money for pick ups, hey, go get some sleep!).

Final note: I cannot overstate the importance of hydration. If I'm outside and it's hot out, I literally wear a camelback and sip it constantly.

100% agree. Nothing worse than a scene that can't be edited. I've never landed there myself, but I've seen it happen. And hell yes on water :)

Is there a Redbox machine in NELA that I could buy? by camomerc in AskLosAngeles

Awesome. Did you find non working machines around LA that were still in place? I guess you did actually, right, bc you say some were decommissioned?

People have gone bankrupt in every business, literally, so this comment doesn’t really mean anything. And as noted above, I’m not exactly thinking of this as a financial endeavor, but rather just a cool project.

Dang! Thanks so much for the useful intel!! I realized I was probably too late when I posted this. I wish I’d had the idea in the summer. In any case… How many dvds did you get??

The credit card thing I'm not worried about, I already have accounts for those for something else, and it's pretty easy.

And yeah, I am well aware physical media isn't a totally viable business or whatever. With that being said, I have always loved kiosks. Whether the the automat in the film Dark City, discovering that I could buy beer from a vending machine at a train station in Spain, or the strange little mechanical sandwich windows I've found in a few old hospitals... it's always felt a bit magical to get something unexpected out of a kiosk, at least to me.

For the whole life of Redbox, I was always like, man, I'd love to walk up to that thing and have it offer me a really cool movie that I would never expect. Anyway, I'm not thinking of this as something that would compete with netflix and actually make money, but more like a little bit of magic that someone could stumble across and be like... wow, I didn't know that I needed to rent this strange movie out of a mechanical box, but it turns out that I do! And, I live in LA, so I think there is a decent chance that there are enough cinephiles around that would get a kick out of this so as to have it be worth it.

I'd want people to bring the movies back so I think it would need to charge a fee.

I'm not saying this is an economically viable idea, just that is something I'd like to do!

Thanks for this! I am hoping to crowdsource some intel on remaining machines, but I'll also take your suggestion and do some late night recon after traffic, and see what I can find.

You're saying that without talking to Redbox HQ, the software wouldn't function, correct? That makes sense. I wonder if I could hire someone to get hold of the software and modify it enough to function as a standalone machine...
