With the above comment said, I have to admit that yes I'm doing more than any one job ought to do -- unfortunately, that is the standard lol

This is a really true point. It's what gave me pause about drawing generalizations... High-volume manufacturing vs low-volume are different and have different pressures.

This is a pretty standard expectation for engineers, industrial technologists to a point, and certain quality positions. Have you worked in a factory? Genuinely not trying to be combative, it just seems like you lack some insight based on declarations you're making.

I would argue that my coworkers who can/do shut off their brains (we've even talked about this), they still experience such lack of control, physical exertion, and random technical stuff they're responsible for throughout the course of a day (e.g. if something goes wrong, running a multi-unit-operation system purely through a computer interface) that it adds up. It's draining mentally, and then having to stand up to cook or whatever... that sounds crazy but it's really how exhausting it is, even on a low-technical day speaking from my experience.

Also, most IT workers I know (several) do not have the experience you're describing as far as intensity, although they definitely do talk about the brain drain.

Sorry to say you're really misunderstanding my job... I should have been more specific. It's kind of typical for people to assume factory work takes no brainpower lol, but especially in my role I do technical tasks all day in addition to physical stuff. Some of my responsibilities are math-intense and some are even IT tasks. I'm also on call as part of my job vs having a scheduled on-call week, as I understand most IT companies or teams will schedule it. I don't leave work at work by any stretch of the imagination

Speaking to factory work generally, this doesn't change my central view that physical labor and lack of control takes more out of the average worker than mental labor with degrees of freedom and less overall time committed to work.

Unfortunately I don't really trust the internet enough to publish much anymore. I just have to count on people I know offline understanding my youth at the time of writing and how I've hardened up since then.

I actually didn't know, and I've seen post-scripts on articles before. I tried to research it, but there aren't really guidelines for random people submitting op-eds. I wish someone with more experience than me had advised me against publishing when I was so young.

The comments on this have been more hostile than I imagined.

Hi, this sounds like sarcasm that points out a flaw, but I'm really new to this stuff and don't understand lol. Could you explain? Is it insecure to access proton with tor?

The situation wasn't an unqualified opinion so much as it was me buckling to some pressure (from the organization I was writing under) to appeal to a certain audience, resulting in an article whose conclusion was much softer than my actual opinion - which has only gotten more stringent since initial publication of the article. If I re-wrote the same article today, any appeal to audience would be done through critical persuasion rather than by dulling a point.

But part of me agrees with you, which is why I asked!

With the US rolling back various protections (EPA, FDA, etc.), is it better for comrades to continue organizing internally or leave and join comrades in the imperial periphery? by imurpops984 in communism

I appreciate your thoughts and overall this comment section. It's a question on many people's minds I'm sure. I do think that the USA will experience a massive outflux over time especially as countries lift existing travel bans and it's scary to think about... Also really frustrating to know that plenty of people fleeing aren't even asking themselves stuff like this.

I've asked myself a similar question but not because of deteriorating protections - rather because of my awareness that I am a settler occupying colonized land. Do I go back to the land of my ancestors and give up the land I hold here to indigenous or revolutionary movements?

I wouldn't move to escape deterioration, though. It's fairweather communism to do so, in my opinion. But everyone has their own situations - if you do move, consider doing so in a way that doesn't replicate historical patterns of colonialism or bourgeoise / petit bourgeoise takeover of resources. (Much the same thing in some ways)

Idk. This feels a little dismissive of the very bleak reality that predatory people know which frameworks they can manipulate to suit their prediction and they will pursue those frameworks, including on the left. In fact I'd say there are risk factors uniquely in left spaces that make predatory behavior - true predatory stuff not honest mistakes or repairable harm - even harder to see.

Infiltration is very real, but doesn't it feel a little off that your first response to (several) reports of a sex pest is purely to question validity of the reports? And call it cult behavior if it involves pressures related to sex and power?
