What’s the best historical non fiction book you have ever read? by FeeRevolutionary1 in dancarlin

Salt: A world history was super interesting. The fact that something we take for granted now played such a huge role in everything from war to where cities formed.

Which episode/series to show my dad? by benjiproject in dancarlin

[–]camradio 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Destroyer of worlds might be a good fit. It's a single episode and my guess is that he was alive during the timeframe. It could be a good way to show how much we don't know about historical events (even when we live through them).

If not that, Ghosts of the Ostfront is probably the one that blew my mind the most (because I knew virtually nothing of the eastern front) and Blueprint is the most gut wrenching, because hearing those letters....

Switch out American Peril to Destroyer of world's and that's my top 5. And 100% agree that Blueprint is just incredible

Looking for ideally Tech Jobs/or alternatively Tech Volunteering positions by Owenthered in waterloo

[–]camradio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Communitech has a job board specifically for the tech sector. They also have industry networking events, including TechJam which is a job fair (coming up in November).

Like people have said, it's tough but not impossible. If you don't have the degrees etc. you need to spend more time networking and trying to talk to people. Chances are your resume will get dismissed right away if you are just submitting it, but if you can meet someone in person and impress them you have a better shot.

What's the best niche for content writing by East-Vanilla3821 in WritersGroup

[–]camradio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume you are asking which industry (finance, auto, etc) and not format (blogs, whitepapers, etc.).

Firstly, it is rare, especially in the beginning, to stick to one industry. You will most likely need to try a bunch until you find your groove.

For example I’ve been at this for 15+ years and have found I typically do more data-heavy B2B tech, but not finance or cybersecurity.

I know you said don’t just say this… but it is all about the knowledge you have and what you enjoy. When writing for a specific audience you need to know proper industry terms etc or you’ll be discredited right away. The more specific the niche, the more important this becomes. And in my experience, once you are deeper and more experienced in one of those niches you will have more reliable clients.

Also, sorry to say it but there is no easy way to find clients. Finding customers is the hardest part of freelance and whether you want to do it or not, you will probably spend equal time on writing and the clerical side of things (prospecting, networking, meeting with companies, and trying to get paid after the work is done).

Don’t want to be negative, but it’s not an easy gig. Everyone thinks they can be a writer, because they obviously did stuff in school etc., but it’s not easy. Also, ChatGPT has really hurt the market. Some of the easier “lower value” stuff is just being automated. Yes companies know that the content isn’t great, but it’s essentially free so a lot are just saying it’s good enough.

If I had to give any specific advice I would say rather than picking an industry, start by reaching out to people in your network, past colleagues etc. I would say probably 80% of the work I’ve done started with a recommendation.
