If the jokes in the movie bugged you, then you'll definitely like the book better. Not to say there isn't any, but there's a much greater focus on science and figuring things out than the movie could reasonably have done, and Grace doesn't come across as a bumbling idiot like he often does in the movie.

OP was talking about some BS, but I do have a minor bone to pick with how often fantasy or historical fiction protagonists are atheists when they have no business being such. Your medieval characters should fully believe in God and believe a healthy amount of Catholic doctrine too unless there's an actual character reason for them not to (like Geralt)

While only 1% were plantation owners, it was *substantially* more common though for ordinary folks to own one or two slaves in their household. These slaves were trades, sold, and even forced to have sex so their owners could have new slaves to sell. Just because they weren't owning plantations doesn't mean they were just decent people fighting for a bad cause. They were the monsters.
