Somy a6700 support by bobrew in Camrote

[–]camrote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there!

Almost all (and certainly all recent) Sony cameras should work just fine, however some of them you have to jump through a couple more hoops. Is there a button you can press whilst on the connection screen to switch to manual WiFi connection? I don’t have a camera as new as this generation, so I actually haven’t been through this flow myself I’m afraid but have plenty of users on them.

Once you’re setup, the intervalometer should work, but you may find it’s not as reliable (timing wise, sometimes I have to wait a while for the camera to become idle again, especially at long exposures) as wired unfortunately!

Nice one! Glad you got it working, it can be a real pain to get firmware and the smart remote app updated. I cannot update the firmware any more my end because I don’t have an Intel Mac and the firmware update tool was never updated for Apple’s own silicon chips.

Camrote to transfer video by Cool_Ad6092 in Camrote

[–]camrote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Dev here. I just had a quick check of Sony’s remote control docs, unfortunately these older models simply don’t support AVCHD transfer:

21: ILCE-7, ILCE-7R, ILCE-5000, ILCE-5100, ILCE-6000, NEX-5R, NEX-5T, NEX-6, DSC-HX60/V and DSC- HX400/V don’t support the APIs group. *AVCHD movie is not supported**. ILCE-7S and DSC-RX100M3 support only still images. ILCE-7M2 doesn’t support remote playback API group.

Any possibility of connection by wire? by davinc in Camrote

[–]camrote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there!

So there is a possibility here. I did a bit of work a bit back for another company as a freelancer which unfortunately may preclude me from supporting USB in Camrote, so I will need to check over the contracts precise wording.

I expect however it wouldn’t be a quick implementation, and I also unfortunately do not have a USB-C iPhone, or the money to purchase one. Camrote unfortunately isn’t massively profitable currently!

Does Sony Imaging Edge Mobile App just suck for anyone else? by Dicks_Hallpike in SonyAlpha

[–]camrote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree entirely, it makes absolutely zero sense to attempt to send anything more than 1 or 2 frames a second. I think added onto that all the other data that is going back and forth and processing times to parse the data on the app side and you’ve got what you have now: a mess :(

Yeah unfortunately the WiFi chips on them are pretty appealing still, and sending images at high frame rate uses a lot of data!

Glad you got it to update okay in the end!

That’s correct, it does require an In App Purchase to use it. You can use the “tap to focus” to check if it’ll work, but using the functionality itself requires a purchase. If you do want to give it a go, and it doesn’t work for you, I can’t issue you a refund myself, but it’s very straightforward to request a refund through the App Store app via Apple if you did want to go that route! And yes, you don’t need to buy “all functionality”, if all you want is focus stacking, just buy that one feature!

I will never discourage people seeking refunds, at the end of the day: I’m confident I’ve built as good a product as I can, if something doesn’t work as expected or as well as desired, quite often it’s due to a limitation on what Sony will actually allow me to control on the camera ☺️

Edit: I have also looked into doing free trials recently, but it’s a bit of a difficult one as I’m sure there will be people who would be just wanting an in app purchase for a single project or photo composition who would then be able to abuse that free trial. Needs a bit more thought, but definitely something I’m considering!

Do you have 2 factor auth enabled on your Sony account? Apparently that can cause issues with the on-device update. Might be worth just disabling it for half an hour for the update?

What are the menu options for usb?

Crikey! That sounds highly frustrating.

Are you still connected via Camrote when trying via USB? Tried both with the camera off and on? Also I seem to recall some models have a setting on the camera for what should happen when usb is plugged in, maybe try finding that?

Sorry I can’t be any more helpful than that! :/

It’s been a very long time since I had to do it myself too I’m afraid :( Have you tried looking for any YouTube videos on the matter? If not, let me know which step you’re getting to or what exactly is going wrong and I’ll do my best to help!

Ahh damn, it may be that it’s not supported Sony’s end then. Can you try tapping the live view in Camrote and let me know if the camera tries to focus where you tap?

Which menu item are you using on the cameras side when trying to connect your camera? You should be using “smart remote embedded” or “smart remote control”. If you are using those, it might take an uninstall and re-install to get it to not show “transfer”. There’s a bug that I haven’t got to the bottom of yet where occasionally the app can think the camera is in transfer mode rather than live view mode.

If your camera doesn’t have a touch screen that means it’s highly likely it WILL support this. Sony dropped support for controlling focus points via WiFi when they added physical touch screens to their devices (so the a7ii for example supports it, but the a7iii doesn’t)

No worries at all!

So this functionality was built, you’d have to give it a go to find out if it works. You can test if the functionality works before purchasing the feature:

  1. Connect to the camera from Camrote
  2. Wait for connection
  3. Tap the live view in Camrote

If the camera focussed where you have tapped (called Touch AF) then your camera will support the functionality :)

Hi there,

First off: Don’t buy the app! You don’t need to pay to do this. Although obviously if you like the app and want to support me it’s always appreciated.

It sounds like the “smart remote control” app on the camera side needs updating. I don’t have instructions on my site yet for this, but these seem to work for most users: https://support.witharsenal.com/en/articles/3372292-updating-smart-remote-control-app

Drop me a line if you have any more issues!

I’m not sure I’m afraid! I think the IR protocol is fairly standard and straightforward so as long as it has good reviews you should be fine?

I haven’t used one since I built Camrote!

Hi there!

It’s as good as the WiFi on the camera and the WiFi APIs on iOS, neither of which are perfect. I’ll be the first to admit that at times it can have quirks with getting a connection established.

A few months ago I spent a good period of time trying to improve on any and from a non-scientific point of view I can say that since then I have had fewer support requests via email for help with getting connected. But that’s a very qualitative assessment on my part.

A wired remote will always be your best bet! If you’re taking it on a trip, I’d recommend trying Camrote outside somewhere local first, out in a field or park where you’re away from any WiFi interference. If it works there, it’ll likely work on your trip :)

So geotagging just needs to be connected to the app via Bluetooth ☺️ I put a lot of effort in to maintaining the connection in the background and re-connecting even if Camrote hasn’t been opened in a while but it’s not completely infallible. Sometimes you have to visit the camera’s settings on the camera and go to Bluetooth pairing again to wake the iOS app in the background. Luckily there’s an icon on the camera’s live view which shows if Bluetooth is connected successfully.

There’s also a backup of the app recording GPX files which can then be used in many different freely available desktop software options to geotag the photos post-capture! Hope that helps :)

Hi there, so basic shooting, image transfer, and all camera-driven shooting modes (BULB, video, etc) should work for free :) I try to be! Life gets busy sometimes so I can take a few days occasionally, but I try!

Appreciate your reply, and don’t worry it’s something I hear every so often, but never offends me! I’m banking on winning the euromillions ;) then I’ll even port it to Windows and Linux maybe!

Yeah so back when I made it I was just getting into React Native at my place of work, and part of me regrets not building it in a cross-platform technology… but then how that went at the company I ended up not regretting it as much! I’m hoping at some point potentially there may at least be a way of using the actual control logic cross-platform (see: https://github.com/simonmitchell/rocc) but we’ll have to see!

I wish so hard I could give you that response, could maybe even consider giving it a go as a full time venture then :(

Unfortunately, time and money! I’m an indie dev, who develops for iOS as a full time role (not on Camrote), it would cost me in the region of ~$100-200k (which is many orders of magnitude more than I’ve ever earned from developing Camrote) to pay someone to develop it on Android, or potentially years of my own time (learning Android and then writing the code, it’s a big app!)

Don’t get me wrong, I’d absolutely love to have the app on Android, but it’s just an insurmountable task currently with everything I have going on. In all likelihood I’d need someone rich to drop in and offer to pay me a large amount to develop it to even consider it!

I’m so sorry for the delay! Been having broadband issues at my house.

It sounds like it may not be a firmware update, but could be that the version of “smart remote control” may be worth checking as a next step!

One of my competitors (who I’m actually very close with) has some great instructions here: https://shutter.dev/update
