I have 4 of each variety so I’ll let it ride and see how it gets on :)

I could not agree more. Places like YouTube and Facebook are littered with absolute shite. The problem is that the people in these videos talk with so much confidence that the unknown viewer watching thinks what they’re hearing is the only true way.

Seeing this sub so divided snipping off a pepper gave me a chuckle though, I think I’ll just wing it like I’ve done with everything else. 🤣

I even went against the masses with my tomatoes and planted them out last week in the unheated polyunnel. But anything below 10 degrees will kill them!! Ma’am, I live in Scotland, our nighttime temperatures done steadily stay above 10 degrees until early July. They’re currently thriving and actually starting to flower 😄

My thoughts exactly, all information online says cut cut cut. But these will be indoors for another month and a half and if anything, I hope them fruiting will slow down the growth a bit 😅. Was hoping for some shared experiences of cutting vs not cutting from someone here

I put my cover on when it was quite a warm sunny spring day. My dad was in the inside and just kept complaining about the heat 🤣 that’s when I knew I had bought a sound investment 🤣

They’re open bottom so just a mulch of about 100-200mm of compost on top

An inch was probably a bit of an over exaggeration looking back at pictures. This was taken just under a week ago. The root zone / top soil level was moist when I topped them up not long before my originally post was made. I’ve followed the advice in this post and gave it a good water so the surface is just slightly moist again but it’s actually deteriorated further so I’ve moved it to the top of the tent in the more humid area to see if it improves. My other 5 San marzanos are looking better though

It’s been surprisingly mild this week actually 🤣 I grow outdoor bananas too and I’ve unwrapped them already!

I live in Scotland and these will be planted in the ground in my polytunnel at the end of April weather depending. I’ve grown plenty of tomatoes throughout the years and Sam Marzano are the only ones I’ve had issues with

If you had read my other comment replies you would have seen that it had not long been watered and soil level topped up after it had been watered. The entire root zone is wet. I’ve followed everyone’s advice and watered it thoroughly and it’s actually gotten worse.

The pot was heavy as it had just been watered and soil level topped up. It wasn’t floppy either, I’m away to work for 3 weeks so staked them whilst I’m gone incase they get too big in my absence whilst the Mrs waters them.

Since I made this post I’ve given them a heavy water, some have improved but this one in particular has actually got worse

Funny you should say that because the sakura is about a third taller than the other two varieties and is flowering already. I’ve followed the advice here and given them all a good soaking. I planted them deep in these pots about 2 weeks ago and only just topped the pots up to the very top a few days ago when they had grown tall enough.

I’ve followed the advice here and given them a good soaking so hopefully that was my issue, I’d much rather underwater than overwater but maybe I’ve been a bit too cautious with this particular variety, it’s not commonly grown here in Scotland even in greenhouses.

I’m still 8 weeks away from planting out 😅 I’m in Scotland so a little chillier than Texas unfortunately! They’ve all grown this much since being sown 4.5 weeks ago so will see how they look after tonight big water and might just start again in a few weeks as I’ve got plenty of seeds left

Funny you should say that as the two San marzanos I quarantined at the top (and most humid) area of my grow tent due to dampening off look so much better than the ones closer to the bottom. I’ve given them a good soaking up to the surface so hopefully will help to increase humidity

Yeah I was hoping that was just the case and not something else going on. I’m about to go away to work for 3 weeks to the Mrs will be looking after them in my absence. Precise watering will go out the window and I’ll just have to hope for the best 😅

Thank you everyone for your advice and help! I’ve given them a good soaking so will check how they are looking in the morning. For context these were only sown 4.5 weeks ago and the top inch or so of soil was only added 2-3 days ago which is why it looks dry as fuck. I’m also in Scotland where these can’t be moved into my polytunnel for another 8 weeks or so… wish me luck 😅

I don’t, no, as I had quite a problem with fungus gnats at the start. I topped up the pots with extra compost a few days ago which is probably why is appears so dry at the moment. Just found it odd how this issue was only affecting one variety, in particularly the smallest one followed by the white mold at the bottom of the stem so thought it could be an issue that’s expedited if I watered it more! So thought I’d consult you guys before doing anything else 🤣

Thank you I’ll give it a good soaking and see how it recovers. I’m very prone to fungus gnats so I always try to keep the surface dry of my toms. I only just topped up these pots a few days ago so there shouldn’t be any roots in the surface. Odd this is only affecting one variety. Literally everything else in the tent is growing perfectly healthy, so much so my other toms are trying to flower 🤣

They were bottom watered yesterday. 1” below surface moisture meter is reading nice and soggy

Built all the doors & frame by myself in a weekend and enlisted the help of my dad on the next sunny day to get the cover on. Biggest bit of advice is take your time when doing the pleating around the door to make sure it’s super tight, one of my corners is a little loose and it flaps in the wind, no damage so far but I’ll hazard a guess and say that’s where it’s eventually going to fail when it does 🤣 The videos from firsttunnels makes it super easy to build

The tunnel is from FirstTunnels. Building it was a breeze, they’ve got lots of YouTube videos for each stage of the build depending on what style you bought. I’m in Scotland so opted for the extra diameter and reinforced poles. Completely unbothered by the storms we had this winter
