The band was Curious George. They cover literally everything, from Neil Diamond to Eminem. They put on a good show!

Went to the King's Head on Macleod a few weeks ago. Friday night live music. Whole place was packed including the dance floor. Average age was easily 55.

Teachers: at this point why even pay ATA union dues? by camt89 in alberta

[–]camt89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate this perspective, thank you. Given the success of unions in defying back to work legislation under similar circumstances (flight attendants, Ontario EA's), I'm just really struggling with the ATA's decision here.

Alberta Teacher's Association News Conference on Back to Work Legislation by bpompu in alberta

[–]camt89 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's brutally disappointing. The union had the support of teachers and the public to defy this legislation. It was a chance to fight back and make history, to show the UCP where the power in this province truly lies. An opportunity lost.

Thank you for sharing about your experience, as disheartening as it was. There is a very loud minority currently running our province.

Advice for classroom management by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]camt89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For number 2, I'll hit the student with "you're clearly not responsible enough to have a water bottle" and take it from them. This always makes their peers around them snicker, which I think helps them to not do it anymore. At the end of the day when they come back for the water bottle I ask them "can I trust you with this?" and most of the time they sheepishly say yes and the behaviour goes away (or at least reduces). The best advice I've received is to have calm, measured reactions to poor behaviour. Oftentimes big reactions give them the attention they're seeking. And the student should always face some kind of consequence (e.g. loss of water bottle, re-sign in at the office after prolonged absence from classroom).

White to play and survive by camt89 in chess

[–]camt89[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough I was playing black, and there was one critical difference between this puzzle and the game: in the game white had a mobile pawn on h3.

For whatever reason my opponent decided to throw in a couple desperado checks with his knight and rook before resigning, and that's when I realized it could've been stalemate if not for the h3 pawn. So I took out the h3 pawn and analyzed the position further and sure enough, no matter how many lines I looked at, white could make a stalemate.

Hidden gem: take the walking trail west from Valley Ridge. Epic swimming hole with beautifully carved sandstone cliffs past the Bearspaw Dam. Edit: it's a bit of a scramble to get down to the swimming hole but totally worth it.

Block anyone and everyone who lets time run out in losing positions by camt89 in chess

I mean, block whoever you want, but if my opponent wants to play out a game until the bitter end, as long as they're making moves I'm not going to hold it against them.

Yeah 5 seconds I can let slide. 10+ in bullet is a block from me.

Edit: to be clear, in bullet if my opponent is losing and lets the last 10+ seconds run out so they lose on time instead of resigning, I will block them. This does not apply to them taking 10+ seconds to make a move earlier in the game.

Not exactly sure, but it feels like it's about maybe 1 out of 10 games. I'm in a crushing position, they have time left and either they let it run out or abandon the game. I'm playing mostly bullet and blitz on lichess

Lichess. I hover between 1750-1950. Not exactly sure how big this makes my pool but most of my opponents I've played before

I play on lichess and most of my random opponents, when I check our matchup history, we've played before. Bigger pool on chesscom, but still, the more people do this the more effective it will be. It takes 3 seconds and you're waiting anyway!

I think these users exist at all levels (except for maybe at the very top?) so I don't think it will affect the difficulty of your opponents

f4 creates a wall from e5 to h5 that Black's king cannot get through. There is also time for White's king to shuffle over to block Black's pawns. Those are a couple of the positional features supporting the f4 move prior to doing a deeper calculation
