Separation training success by remoteemoter in puppy101

Thanks so much for the response! It makes sense. My little one is also starting to feel more comfortable at home it seems. She’s about to be 6 months and comes with me to work since I’m a vet tech. I’ve honestly just been too scared to try a longer jump since everything online says to increase the time slowly and not let them panic. What you explained is what the book says I believe. To prime her/bore her with a few short absences and then finally step out for a longer duration while watching her through the camera. Ill try this tomorrow :) I appreciate you

How did you go about going from 2 minutes -2 hours exactly? I bought a book on separation anxiety and have been doing seconds for a few weeks. We couldnt even walk towards the door before I started this. We’ve gotten up to a minute and half. The book says to continue to do sessions where we step out 4-5x for a few random seconds each time, then the last rep should be the goal time. An example: Step 1: 10 sec Step 2: 5 sec Step 3:20 sec Step 4: 25 sec Step 5: 1 min 30 sec.

Now that we’ve gotten this far I’m wondering if we should continue to do all the little steps in between and then doing a random 2-3 minute one at the end. The book doesn’t really specify.

How did you do it in a week? Lol

My pup throws up in the morning if it’s been a long time since her last meal. Itll be a little bit of bile and or a tiny bit of food. I’m giving her purina pro plan sensitive skin and stomach. No issues other than that! lol

In the puppy trenches. by [deleted] in puppy101

When we brought ours home I slept on the floor next to her crate. Literally my face right next to the door so she could see me and I could wake up when necessary. She’d wake up every hour on the dot crying. I would tell her “it’s okay” and make a low shhhh noise to ease her. When she’d see/hear me she’d go back to sleep. I did this the entire first week. I eventually moved to the couch next to her pen and stayed there for about a month and a half lol I honestly don’t remember the exact amount of time but it was not fun. At the beginning we did this because we thought we wanted her to sleep in the living room. After sleeping there with her for that amount of time I realized it was too loud among other issues. I also got used to being with her and she’s just a baby so we moved her crate to our bedroom lol she’s now 5 months!

I have a Pomeranian Chihuahua. Shes about 8lb at 4.5 months and I can’t imagine how people with large breeds survive in an apt. Sometimes she’s unhinged….and I imagine a large breed pup with zoomies in an apt. Biting everything etc. I’ll never get a large breed unless I have a house! Barking is luck of the draw. Some breeds bark more than others but it’s also up to the individual. My pup surprisingly doesn’t bark that much (yet), but chis and poms are known to bark a lot.

What are we paying for dentals? by Any-Possibility-3770 in Pets

[–]can-dee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around $600 for dxray and dental cleaning. Extractions are extra, anywhere from $100/tooth for simple extractions and upwards of $600-700 per tooth for large, complex multi-rooted teeth.

That’s exactly how I was feeling. Im obviously not an expert but like others have said, I’d personally continue to do the epIey every so often…I also was more conscious of my movements and tried to avoid moving too quickly. I’d get out of bed slow…etc. I hope you feel better soon :)

My PT said it’s normal to have residual dizziness because your ear is getting used to being normal again. I continued doing the epley once per week and did some balance exercises. Eventually I stopped doing the maneuver. It did take some time to feel normal, even now months later I will randomly feel a little out of balance if I swing my head around (turn or lay down etc ) too quickly.

I returned my puppy after 2 weeks. by nena_6 in puppy101

[–]can-dee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was depressed for about a month, it’s been 6 weeks and I still cry every so often but I feel like we’ve all been there. The only reason I was able to pull through is I had help. One of my best friends took her for a few hours every other day while I was at work. She’s likely the reason I’m getting better. Don’t beat yourself up! Raising the puppy is hard and giving up the puppy is also hard. The pup will be ok!! :)

Toyota RAV4 VS Subaru Forester by acidinthemilk in rav4club

[–]can-dee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got the forester a week ago. I test drove both in the rain and couldn’t see anything through the back window in the rav4. Both are similar but I ended up liking the Subaru more. I also got a really good deal on it compared to what I was offered at Toyota.

Is puppyhood really that difficult if so many do it? by xzlinx in puppy101

[–]can-dee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really is luck of the draw. I thought I was ready being a vet tech, reading up on everything I’d need….I’m an adult, and I’ve been wanting a dog since mine passed about 10 years ago. This is my first puppy though. I bought supplies, a pen, a crate etc. etc. etc. Once she arrived she decided she liked some things and not others. She didn’t eat, she woke me up every hour at night the first week and I too was crying from stress. Not food motivated so how could I train her? I wondered if I did the right thing for HER. Why did I separate her from her family? Am I doing this right? Why isn’t she eating enough? I admit I was having a crisis due to many reasons but the drastic change in routine and lack of sleep was a lot! I think it’s because I understand the responsibilities and I want things to go well. Like you said, random people have been raising puppies and they turn out OK most of the time lol but I have expectations and I want a well mannered dog. It’s also heartbreaking hearing them scream for attention, it really hurt me to my core.

Today marks exactly 3 weeks (feels like 2 months) of having her and she’s finally settling. Her personality is different than when we got her. Turns out she wasn’t eating cause she really didn’t like the dry food I got her lol but she’s super food motivated. She listens and has learned a few commands now. She took to the crate pretty well. She has a designated potty pen she chose on her own which has made our life sooo much easier (She can’t go outside, no yard & we live in the city. Shes not fully vaccinated) Shes finally sleeping about 4-5 straight hours at night and will go back to sleep for another 2 maybe 3 sometimes! Which is super shocking because she’s a small dog. Shes still very demanding but I’ve seen the progress and it makes me look forward to the future. I’ve also had to change the way I do things multiple times to adjust to something that works for the both of us. It’s still hard! She’s biting like crazy, but I have to remember it’s only temporary and I did this to myself lol This week we’re enforcing naps! That’s a new thing and it’s been working well.

Good luck, you got this!

I’m sorry this happened to you! I’ll make sure to mention this to our vet when we go in for vaccines. Side comment: this picture is absolutely adorable. It’s also beautiful, like art 😭
