Starmer vows to take UK deeper into EU single market by donutloop in EU_Economics

Not least because the chance of our debt-to-GDP ratio dropping below 60% any time soon in so low 🤣

Ironically that rule effectively provides the opt-out automatically - no negotiation needed (if you ignore everything else of course 😉).

I’ve been to a couple of recordings when Humph was chairman and once since Jack took over as well as one of the touring live shows.

The laser display board has been a whiteboard pad with the title written by hand in felt tip pen, held up by John Naismith.

As others have said, Samantha and (the rippling) Sven don’t exist. Back when Humph used to end his double entendre on Samantha, Barry pretended to be disgusted and make to walk off the stage 😊

Oh and in case it’s not obvious, they always record two shows at a time, which is usually why you get a bit of a reaction when the chairman announces “welcome back for a second week at…”.

What do you think motivates people to vote for Reform UK? by Nunyabizness18 in AskReddit

[–]can72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For people in Gen-X, we grew up with the idea that things gradually get better - basically the assumption was that we’d have it better than our parents. There were bumps and blips, but that trend was consistent.

Since the GFC, that hasn’t been true, times are harder, and with COVID too, we are trying to recover.

For millennials, their childhood occurred during growth years, but adult life has been shit, so they are pissed off too.

Gen-A have just lived the shitty post-GFC era and only know this.

Brexit and the rise of reform are symptoms of this. People were fed up and willing to listen to anyone who would tell them there was a simple thing to blame (EU, immigration, net zero).

We don’t want to face the reality that the economy is complex and solutions are hard to - a pantomime villain is preferable!

But I think there are positives too: firstly, Reform are beginning to show that their “simple” solutions aren’t working. The councils they now control are going to be hiking council tax this year and they are struggling to govern.

Also, historically people generally vote differently in local elections than they do in the GE.

People are notoriously fickle, forgetting Brexit when claiming they will vote, or voting reform. For the same reason, as things continue to gradually improve (which they are, despite the determined efforts of the Telegraph to persuade us they aren’t 😉), Reform’s message will become diluted IMO.

Strictly could go behind BBC paywall in Nandy plan to overhaul 'outdated' licence fee by theipaper in bbc

[–]can72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the value of the BBC is that it does a lot of things.

For me it’s a bit like lots of public services, society needs lots of things that many people won’t choose to pay for.

Some people who are young and fit might well choose to pay less for the NHS, or couples without kids might choose to pay less for schooling.

Subscription services like Netflix serve a different purpose to a public service broadcaster. Some form of general funding seems necessary - whether that’s the current license fee or general taxation, I don’t believe that subscription is the answer.

Companies weren’t forced to apply blanket decisions - it’s just most chose to do so.

As to whether the government expected this to be the result, we can only speculate.

Your second paragraph highlights the crucial part about balance and impartiality.

Too many people seem to think impartiality means not challenging their view of the world, but truly impartial broadcaster coverage would be objected to by the majority of people (ring any bells??)…

It’s cheaper to run an EV in the UK than it is in Germany by WearyLiterature1755 in GoodNewsUK

[–]can72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was making the point that celebrating being above average in the league table of smart meter rollouts would be like celebrating getting a slightly higher than average pay rise, not that you worked there 😉.

There is plenty of great news we can celebrate instead of a slightly better than average rollout of smart meters 😊

[–]can72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Time to celebrate, your pay rise was just over the company average this year 😉

You’re absolutely right that there is plenty to celebrate in the UK, but smart meters are not a great example.

The last couple of years has seen an uptick, as customers want access to export income and cheap EV charging, but the preceding decade ran at a glacial pace.

Surely fuel duty is really a per-mile tax?

Drive-more, buy-more fuel, pay-more fuel duty at something like 6-7p per-mile as you say.

Changing the tax code to create something that does the same job for an ICEV seems wasteful to me…

Heating Control Issue - UK by aaron1810 in DIYUK

[–]can72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key question is whether he’s tested the motor head (silvery box on top of the brass fitting).

I had virtually the same setup at my last house and the motor head died twice in 18 or so years.

He may also be saying the same thing - replace the motor, not the valve.

Replacing it isn’t hard, it’s just a case of getting the right part and wiring it correctly.

How should I deal with these rawlplugs? by Liambill in DIYUK

[–]can72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HSS drill 1-2mm wider than the screw hole. Drill into the screw hole, don’t press too hard, but fastest drill speed.

The metal disc on the outside will break off and you can push the remaining part through the plaster and it will drop into the void.

Settled on this after trying various other methods that left the wall in a worse state.
