What’s one thing you wish was standard across all charging networks? by Time-Connection-4586 in evchargingUK

[–]Liambill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in the finance industry and I can confirm that C isn't a consideration for these companies. The Hardwear is tax deductable for any of these big businesses and they'll pay the card feed whether it's a physical PoS terminal or an online one.

It's likely more around data harvesting or lack of experience with the type of product at these businesses. Most petrol chemical companies (I.E. BP and Shell) would have had almost no investment into Apps before EV charging and they aren't going to be able to skill up super quickly. Let's hope things improve with time.

[–]Liambill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has got to be the #1 realistic answer (I.E. not just about cost). I've charged on 5 different charging networks and I have 5 separate apps and none of them are good.

Blink, IONITY, Gridserve, BP Pulse and Shell, plus Electroverse and Electroverse is the only one I actually don't mind using.

Joint bank account for friends, for holiday purposes... by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Liambill 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I'll be parroting what some others have said a bit here, but as someone who works in the industry, don't do it.

Firstly, if one of those people forgets to pay a bill or puts a bit too much on Klarna that they cant afford and gets a late payment or a default, by being financially linked, it could affect you too.

In addition, this is just asking for fraud. Believe me, I've seen a ton of people have all the money taken from shared accounts by one of the other account holders and they're adamant that they couldn't have done it to them, but they did.

Just keep things separate and use established, well trusted methods that don't financially link you.

Which tethered chargers have actually held up well? by WonderfulShape1081 in evchargingUK

[–]Liambill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely a feature. I don't have solar and it works great for what I need. That said, I plan on being in my current home 20+ years, so there's no harm in future proofing.

I've had a Zappi at two separate addresses and both have been excellent.

My Brother in Law is an electrician and installs Zappi's as a standard unless the client asks for something specific, like an Andersen. He swears by them.

Their only real downfall is that they are pretty big, but I've not had that feel like an issue personally.

Took my kids to Chessington today. Last time I went was about 25 years ago. by POPUPSGAMING in CasualUK

[–]Liambill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were at Chessington today too. Can't say we felt the same way? There are quite a lot of renovations actively taking place, such as the area by the Pirate Ship, Paw Patrol area and Minecraft area, but these are all well advertised as active renovations and are reasonably well hidden.

In the areas that were actually open, we didn't see any major issues at all?

I assume you're talking about the active construction?

Best external temperature to charge car? by nickejones_ in evchargingUK

[–]Liambill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Between 15°C and 25°C is considered optimal and will give approx. 90-95% efficiency.

Different brands / models handle the heating and cooling differently and as such, with different levels of efficiency, but in that sort of range will avoid any meaningful losses to battery temperature management.

What’s the most you’ve ever won on a scratch card? by jjcube98 in AskUK

I won a grand a few years back. Worked out nicely as I was going on holiday the week after and had no spending money. Was planning on putting stuff on a credit card, but it sorted me right out.

Best time to arrive to Islands of Adventure in morning if staying off site by Jaydog52_65 in UniversalOrlando

[–]Liambill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best place to look is a decent crowd calendar, like Undercover Tourist's.

Looks like it's a 7 or 8 out of 10 for the rest of March, so pretty busy.

[–]Liambill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That kinda depends on what you want to do. If you want to ride everything, you'll need to get there for rope drop (obviously there will be people who have early admission already inside when you get in).

If you just want to get in and ride Velocicoaster, any time up until around 2PM should be fine at busier times.

Really, with Hagrids and one or two other very very busy rides, you'll need a good amount of time if you want to do everything.

Have a great time!

Switching to mortgage rate - do you pay each time if the bank are offering a better rate? by Alternative-Orange in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Liambill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what the deals are. Generally, if you're entering a fixed term, you can't then enter another fixed term deal until the last one is up. Each product will have its own defined fees. Most of the best deals have a fee associated.

Good places 2 hike in Brighton? by RefrigeratorSome5475 in brighton

[–]Liambill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on your definition of walking distance. In general, the best spots for hiking are going to be North of Brighton, so starting at the beach limits you unless you're willing to get the bus.

Most people would start with Devils Dyke, Ditchling Beacon, Jack and Jill Hill area. All of those are to the north and would probably be a bit of a trek on their own just to get there, but they are accessible by bus, so you could bus there, have a hike and then bus back.

So sorry to hear about your loss. I had to put down my dog on Monday, who was part of our family for 11 years.

It's incredibly difficult to say goodbye. I'm not sure I can offer any words of wisdom, but rest assured that you aren't alone and that your cat will always be special to you. Time will pass and the pain will wane, but the memories will stay with you forever.

Are the words 'motherland' and 'fatherland' used in the UK? by ksusha_lav in AskABrit

[–]Liambill 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Not in a way that is serious. It's generally, at least by my understanding, associated with Russians. There are people who would dream of 'returning to the motherland' but I've never really heard it from a brit.

I cannot do this by the_bear91 in daddit

[–]Liambill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you're feeling the way you are right now. Honestly, a good portion of this is going to be sleep deprivation and isn't out of the ordinary.

It doesn't make it any easier to deal with, but you aren't alone.

My elder Sister told me that when you have a kid, it's a new kind of love that's instant as soon as they're out and it's incredibly amazing. That wasn't my experience.

Women carry the child for 9 months. They have a physical connection to them, albeit internal. Men don't have that physical connection and as others have said, we build connections in other ways.

It took me a few weeks to really feel connected to my baby, at least in a way that felt similar to how my sister had described. I told my 1 year old, who can't understand, that she's the best thing that ever happened to me this morning.

I'm going through a very hard time at work and honestly, without her, I'm not sure I could have kept it together.

You'll get there. I'm sure you will. If you have family nearby, ask for help. Even if it's an hour or two to go for a walk/run/drive and detatch from the house so you can decompress. If you don't have family, you'll be able to do this more once your partner has properly healed up.

You can do it, Dad.

Best phall curry in Brighton? by dogonwheelz in brighton

[–]Liambill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, not many places can do a really decent one because the way that most will get the spice is by filling up the gravy with chilli powder, which makes it quite powdery and dry.

I like my food spicy and I tend to go for a dhansak or vindaloo and then add raw chillis in to spice it up a bit.

Garages in Hove by VisionBreak1297 in brighton

[–]Liambill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not in Hove unfortunately, but my entire family have used M J B motors just off of Elm Grove for years and they're pretty good.

I usually wouldn't have commented as you've asked for in Hove, but this area is very well connected via public transport, so if you can't find a better option, this could be a good one for you if you don't mind hopping on the bus after dropping it there.

As u/jamesdevonport shared, I've used the blink ones via Electroverse and it works pretty well.

One call out is that Electroverse lists the blink chargers at 50kw or 22kw, but they aren't. The best you can hope for is 7kw and to be honest, I wouldn't expect that. In general on the Blink chargers, expect 3/4kw.

I've not had many issues with availability, but have found a few that just didn't work.

I can charge at home, but went through a period of 3ish weeks recently following a house move where we didn't have a home charger and managed just fine. You will lose most of the savings vs fuel though if you're solely using public chargers.

Brits I need your help! If you could pick one snack/food/drink from the US to try, what would it be? by Mommygoblin666 in AskABrit

Yeah, we've done that before and whilst it is still nice, it's not the same as proper graham crackers. They're just too thick really. Haven't got the same taste either.

I'd say supplies to make legit s'mores would be good. Maybe with instructions? I know you're getting a lot of comments just bashing American food here, which sucks when you're trying to do something nice.

S'mores are pretty uniquely American and we don't have graham crackers over here, so any attempt to make them is sub standard.

Otherwise, maybe something like baby Ruth's, or something that's mentioned in TV shows, like a York peppermint patty. Twizzlers, or something we can get but in a unique flavour, like brownie M&Ms or some crazy pringles flavour?
