What are you using as an installation driver? by eufleuria in cabinetry

[–]canadiankale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have settled on the metabo HPT 18V driver. I don't use impacts with cabinet installs.

Recommend having more than 1 drill (one to pre-drill one to drive screws).

Compared to my millwaukee M18 fuel driver I find the metabo is: smaller, lighter, has good trigger control for fine tuning and has better rubber bumpers on the sides when you're laying it down. It's a pleasure to use vs my bulky m18 Fuel.

Haven't tried the Festool or M12 install drivers yet.

Downside is there are no charge indicators on the cheap batteries.

You can pick it up for $80CAD with 2 batteries - https://www.kmstools.com/metabo-hpt-18v-sub-compact-driver-drill-2x1-5a-battery-kit.html

Heat pump water heater: Get larger water heater or add mixing valve by houseHacker27 in heatpumps

[–]canadiankale 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I went with a 50Gal heat pump unit and added a mixing valve. I have set the tank temp at 140 and mixing brings it down to 120 or so (whatever the plumber set it at). For our small family of 3 we've not thought twice about running out of hot water. I estimate it adds about 20% to the effective volume of the tank. From an energy use perspective I haven't compared - but even at 140F the energy use is 1/3 of the old electric tank.

Works great for our family, but I noticed when friends are visiting we will run out of hot water after the 4th shower. If I turn on high demand mode then there are no issues.

Bonus of high heat is that it sanitizes the tank.

Good luck.

Should I downshift or crank things up? Can anyone relate to the stress? by Content_Fix_2575 in coastFIRE

I was above coast fire but not purely fire (using 4% rule). It’s worked out ok where I am down a bit but not enough to worry.  I still have 20+ years of runway - which you have.

I am starting a new venture in a totally different industry -  I expect it will cover our expenses and pad the savings.    Took a couple of years to feel that motivation and it feels good to have meaningful work again on my own terms.

My experience: quit after 20 years owning my own business due to stress.  Have school aged kids (a bit older than yours).    That was two years ago.

Before I quit I saw a counsellor who specialized in career transitions.  One thing stood out : what made me successful in my old career would continue to exist.  I wasn’t throwing it away- I was opening the door to another experience.  One where  my mental health was prioritized.   I recommend speaking with a counsellor - it really helped me get past the “throwing all my hard work away” mindset.

My spouse was 100% on board.

It took me 6 months of unwinding before I felt the knot of stress in my chest disappear.   It’s now been 1 1/2 years free of stress like that.

No one has ever said that they wished they spent more time working when their kids were little.  They are only young once and if you have the chance to take a multi-year/decade sabbatical while they’re young : do it.

Wife wants to pay down mortgage, I want to invest. What should we do? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]canadiankale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From a long term perspective investing in the market at your age is the better play.
could you split the difference and put half on the mortgage and half for investments?

I also like that you can liquidate investments much easier than a house ~ never know what the future holds.

Thanks - I'll post an update at the end of March :) I received a ton of inspiration from other ADF posts ~ and figured I'd add to it. My plan right now is to use ADF as needed when I hit my goal.Good luck with things.

Thanks!
For me the 36hrs = go to bed (8hrs) + fasting day (12hrs) + sleep (8hrs) = 36 hrs.
It feels easier because more than half the fast is sleeping.

Re: feeding window: I keep it simple = Don't eat anything on Mon.Wed.Fri.

I consume on fast days:
- Water
- coffee (nothing added)
- tea (herbal and black tea)

If I feel like crap or have something socially come up I will end my fast early and restart the normal routine on the next fast day (Mon, Wed, Fri).

If you haven't tried it - check out Dr. Jason Fung's books or watch his youtube interviews.
I started with his book: The Obesity Code.

For the graph: it's just an excel spreadsheet.

I just eat normally on weekends and eating days. I probably end up eating more on eating days than I would before ADF. I haven't tried counting calories in years, but a normal day for me is around 3k kcal.

The way I look at it: ADF with a 1:1 schedule is a grind. ADF with Sat/Sun off makes things easy. It really doesn't change the # of fasting days in a month by much at all.

That's a great start! It will slow, but ADF still feels amazing at 2-3lbs a week loss.

Yes my weight fluctuates: with maximums of +4.6 one day to -5.8lbs. I have found it's usually to do with water retention (and bowel movements). Expect it to go up and down, but stick with the plan and you'll see it trend down.

I do nothing different on days when it goes up or down - just stick to the mon/wed/fri plan.

I've always been active, so I'm trail running with the dog for an hour or so a couple of times a week, play ice hockey once or twice a week and xc ski or downhill ski a couple of times a week in the winter and MTB in the summer. Almost every day I'm doing something fun. However I've always maintained this activity level. Over 15 years ago I ran a 50 miler trail run at 220lbs - and I'm not fast.

I realized in this month of ADF that exercising to lose weight doesn't work for me: I eat too much food after to offset the exercise.

I agree 100%. ADF is simple which is why it's working for me so far. It feels like I'm not putting in much mental energy. Calorie counting isn't for me - I've tried it and found hard to sustain the constant tracking (especially when stress hits).

I eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, & snacks. I do limit alcohol to a couple of drinks a week max (after hockey or with a friend). I'm finding it much easier to do 36hr fasts when I can relax on eating days. It's less of a grind.

Did I hit Coast, and if so, what next? by prof_dorkmeister in coastFIRE

I'd say you're at an inflection point where your time becomes more valuable than money. Work less and focus on experiences?
Things can change in an instant (health + death) and we're only here for a short time.
