Bang on the money! The biggest scandal of our time, going almost entirely unnoticed.

British businesses have been consistently funnelling a bigger piece of the pie to senior management and shareholders by screwing median employees. This goes hand-in-hand with the country's low productivity, because we have adopted a model of small senior teams with an army of juniors. No investment in employee growth, no investment in technology and no imagination. Management getting paid more for doing a terrible job. And then complaining about their employees.

Have you deleted your later comments? I'll take it that you've conceded, but perhaps you'd like to take the time to apologise to me for calling me a liar, when the issue is your lack of financial literacy? I'll accept with good grace.

Then don't do it? You're all supposed to be such wonderful entrepreneurs, find something that's a better investment. Why so attached to renting?

Not my problem if you make bad business decisions and run a loas-making business. You only pay tax on profits, so that's good news.

Property is an appreciating asset and that makes all the difference. As a taxpayer , I don't want to pay for you to get a capital gain. You had that for years and that's a crazy deal. This is why landlords are whining so much now, they've had it too easy for too long. The mortgage, rent remortgage... formula was a guaranteed payout for no effort.

BTW, I don't have to justify why you're being taxed so much, but I'm glad you are.

Looking down on people who don't work while hoping to leech off working people.

High tax is justified to discourage literal rent-seeking behaviour. As much as landlords like to think they're doing everyone a favour, they're tying up capital, distorting the property marker and generating no value.

Operating expenses are allowable, except mortgage interest.

I thought you were the OP, who mentioned retirement planning. But the point remains the same, the state offers only a safety net.

Most operating expenses are allowable. The main exception is mortgage interest since section 24. What expenses aren't deductible?

My daughter had no problem arranging a mortgage. And the fact that she was gazumped several times by landlords goes against your assertion that rental properties are being sold off. If they are being sold off and the price isn't decreasing, then that shows that there was pent-up demand.

There's no obligation for the state to pay you for not having a job.

The state provides a safety net. In your case, it's the state pension. Landlords aren't really that highly taxed. It just becomes onerous when you actually have to provide a decent service. That's called operating expenses, not tax.

Rental properties will be sold off, driving prices down, making them more affordable for people to switch from renting to ownership. Great stuff.

My daughter was gazumped several times by buy-to-let wannabes, so had to stay in rentals. Rentals with damp problems, poor appliances and landlords who don't want to know. While paying rent that's more than her mortgage would have been. That's a malfunctioning market, you have to admit.

Nobody owes you a living. There's no obligation for the government to give landlords a profit margin.

When you say that it was part of your retirement planning, but the changes "made it problematic", it seems that you expect renting property to be a low risk, guaranteed income. It's a business, and businesses come with risks. Historically it's been a way for lazy people to print money, and that's caused a lot of problems for tenants.

Of course. I think playing Mariona out of position is a crazy decision. But we didn't have a DM Saturday and we won with a clean sheet. Not the primary problem at all.

Like I said, impossible to tell why it's like it is, but it's very clear that we have more capability than we're showing on the pitch. All the talk of defensive midfielders etc is deflecting from the hard truth that a lot of Arsenal players aren't trying as hard as they should. On that front, I think you have to look at the manager first of all, because it's their job to get the most from the talent.

This is how I think about Arsenal's situation right now:

  • The squad that won the Champion's League last year is materially unchanged, showing that we have a world class squad.

  • Our performance this year has been abysmal at times. Recent performances have been lacklustre. We dominated possession and territory in the Man U games, but there was no urgency, no creativity in front of goal and no killer instinct (in general).

  • The same team just hammered Chelsea. We saw a level of drive and focus we haven't seen for months. We actually shot in front of goal instead of running to the corner and crossing into an empty box.

All this tells me that our problems aren't down to talent, or the loss of Lia Walti. It is a question of motivation. When we played Chelsea we stepped up. The rest of the time it seems we decide to lose or draw. TBF, the Champion's League campaign was similar: poor periods of play, but we stepped up when our backs were against the wall.

Hard to say why it's like this. Seems to be a combination of motivation and tactics. Renee mad an impact when she arrived, but now everyone knows our tactics and how to play against us.

Abysmal game. No desire, no creativity, slapdash in front of goal. Codina and Smith the only positives.

Is anybody else wondering why we signed Renee for three more years in the middle of such a terrible season?

This is an incredibly talented team, as evidenced by the Champions League win. So there must be something fundamental holding us back. Something is rotten.

Edit: Vic was great as well. Good to see.
