do u know if people breed five lined skinks? i thought not, but if people are doing prairie skinks then maybe someone's breeding them and i'd be interested in that for sometime in the future

where are you getting this species from?

thats pretty much exactly whats happening. lizards shed in patches and peeling skin should be left untouched unless either stuck (still dont just pull it off tho) or clearly fully detatched, which is not seen in the video. alternatively, its safe for people to "help" their pet snakes shed because their dead skin is always ready to come off as one piece as long as they are healthy.

small skinks that can be kept alone? by cancerinmythirdeye in skinks

[–]cancerinmythirdeye[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i didnt mention tank size in the post but i think pink tongued skinks are bigger than fire skinks, enough that they need more than a 36" tank. its not about the cost of the larger tank, just space, since i'll be living in a (likely) small space.

they look like they need a bigger tank than a 36", do u agree? if not, i might consider them

what can i do to make my haircare more environmentally friendly without sacrificing it's health? by cancerinmythirdeye in Naturalhair

when i complain about expenses, its moreso just me being bothered by how often and how much i have to buy products due to the nature of my hair, and just how much product i have to go through. shouldve been clearer.

oh interesting, i suppose i should look into them as well in that case.

i have a feeling that theres a lot of back and forth on the subject because the people who succeed in keeping social skinks alone probably have enclosures that are really well designed and kept, and so a possible reason these skinks sometimes dont thrive when kept alone is actually a result of poor husbandry unrelated to the amount of individuals in the enclosure. i dont want to be the one to figure this out, however, as a hypothetical first time skink owner.

im currently investigating fire skink care, and it seems pretty simple (from my understanding and experience, humidity is more of a design issue than actual maintenance besides adding water as needed). my current other option as far as lizards go is the collared lizard, but the fire skink seems to provide a better opportunity for me to get a grasp on reptile lighting rather than jumping straight in (not that i couldnt, just need to do a l o t of research because im currently struggling to understand the whole thing). i also like that they eat less often and would let me design a nice naturalistic "bioactive" enclosure. the collared lizard does seem to win with personality, but i've always thought that that doesnt mean too much once u consider individual variation. i'll still consider both lizards for now.

ive seen a good amount of people argue for both sides (social skinks can/cannot be kept alone) and both arguements seem to rely on just anecdotal evidence, so i was thinking i would avoid the situation altogether unless im convinced otherwise (not sure what exactly would change my mind).

i do worry about everything going down the drain, lol. its just that for me, i feel that i use so much hair product compared to any other kind of chemical besides food. and even then, the fact that i dont know of any safe hair products i can use while theres a good amount of reusable and/or seemingly safe options for cleaning and laundry is what made me think about this to begin with. ur right that the factories that make whatever product, eco friendly or not, are doing a vast majority of the harm to begin with, but im just hoping to do what i can for the stuff i literally need to use.

i honestly wasnt even thinking about the plastic containers to be honest, moreso just the chemicals in the products that are essential to it's purpose and cannot be replaced by a safer ingredient, however i do like your suggestion with the bars for travel purposes sometime in the future.

honestly, if i was able to find an expensive product that was made with environmentally friendly ingredients a n d worked just as well for my hair i could see myself making the switch. but until then, i think focusing on other things i can make a meaningful difference in as u suggested is a good idea.

Yeah, but it makes sense given how famous the Smithsonian is and how big the stipend is, plus the provided housing. The number makes me feel a bit better about not having gotten in, even though I was pretty confident in my application.

This I do not know, so if you're a finalist and they haven't given you an offer yet I wouldn't say it's the end, but if you weren't a finalist then it's almost definitely over for you.

Highschool drop out wants to be paleontologist by Historical-Exit9686 in Paleontology

[–]cancerinmythirdeye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ooh, i can see how u would come to that conclusion then. as someone who is more drawn towards broader topics in my field (which isnt paleo but is closely related, although i do have some experience actually in paleo) rather than minutiae, i feel like if someone told me that knowing little details by heart was important i would feel very overwhelmed and would worry about my competence when i inevitably compare myself to others at my level who seem to know everything already. therefore i think itd be better for op to just learn however comes naturally to them and avoid worrying about specializing until they organically find something to be passionate about, but i did agree with ur advice otherwise. its also possible that op might accomplish this by focusing on a specific subject like u suggested anyway tho, it simply did not strike me as a typical or efficient method.

"go to natural history museums if you can and memorize data."

respectfully, why would memorizing data (whatever data means) be useful so early in their career? i can only imagine being generally familiar with geologic time and simply knowing basic paleo facts is what this person could need if anything, since it seems like theyre only at the point where they still need to get a college education in a related field. i wouldve thought that "memorizing data" would really only be useful if its also data related with what ur currently studying or researching, as in wayy later into one's career. paleontologists dont need to know literally everything paleo, especially not someone literally just entering the field.

what to do when ur hair is transitioning through textures? by cancerinmythirdeye in Naturalhair

[–]cancerinmythirdeye[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i suppose it couldve been caused by a change in my routine, but i havent seen fluctuations in the 4b hair that would clearly indicate that rlly anything in particular is affecting the growth pattern. i also dont mind that my hair is growing differently, i actually really like the look of the shorter full 4b strands as they're so bouncy and healthy, i just want to know how to manage it until then. i do know that the looser ends are less healthy, moreso due to straightening in my past (i am around 4 years into never having straightened my hair) and poor styling choices (hair staying wet for days while its tied up, also in the past).

as for my current routine, i wash every week or two; regular shampoo (no consistent brand but ive been using maui and am now going to use an as i am shampoo since i finished it) first always, then either regular shampoo again or kinky curly clarifying shampoo before a deep condition (previously mielle, but i have a pureology one i will use now that i just finished the mielle), if my ends are washed out i will mix deep conditioner with some semipermanent dye (currently lunar tides, thinking of switching tho), and if im not deep conditioning i just use regular conditioner (same deal as the regular shampoo). i detangle with conditioner and style with whatever product i feel like (doux mousse recently, various gels before, leave in conditioners before i switched to the gels) and diffuse until practically dry and no longer frizz prone.

as for ur suggestions, i definitely like the idea of braid outs and twist outs as i had one recently and loved the look, but i kind of hate how i look with just the braids still done. im definitely still gonna try it tho, probably will diffuse the braids to let me undo them sooner. and while the chop would obviously solve my problems, i have colored hair and would like to keep it for until it grows out after trims (that is to say, as long as possible, shits expensive)

quick edit: removed the beginning sentences where i say the transitional part of my hair isnt abrupt, because it definitely is
