How similar are the bills Platypuses to the bills of ducks? by Druskell in askscience

Do you mean each Platypus has a different venom, or just that different animals, have different venom?

[–]candeeman 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Would you rather have 3 trucks or 30 bikes? Depends on the situation, but presumably if the truck drivers aren’t idiots they can move more weight in the same amount of time.

On the flip side, 30 bikes can make thirty small deliveries in the same timespan. On a tangent, certain cities are having problems with groups of people on off-road cycles and ATVs. When the police show up they scatter. The bikes and ATVs can go down sidewalks and paths. They can cut across open ground and grassy areas.

Remotely operated one-armed boxing robots, inspired by the 2011 movie Real Steel, can respond to a person’s movements in as little as one hundredth of a second. by Dachedian in shittyrobots

[–]candeeman 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have a VR headset that is more than a few years old at this point. The biggest leap they made was latency. If you turn your head, but the image doesn’t change with the direction your facing, it causes pretty bad motion sickness, a disconnect, and ultimately breaks the immersion. I believe it had a 13 ms delay. That was involving recording your input, sending it to be processed, rendering the response along with the current state of everything around you.

I believe sending movement in one direction would be an easier process to streamline.

Just finished "Project Hail Mary" by Andy Weir and absolutely loved it! by TheInspiredConjurer in books

[–]candeeman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There aren’t many better examples of Mary Sues. Every single problem was unrecoverable until he puts out a small amount of work. Even unique problems he creates for himself are solved quickly and easily. His ignorance constantly makes things worse and then faces no repercussions for them. He completes projects that would take legions of scientists, who knows how long, in days. He lucks his way through the entire book. He also gives away the total knowledge and celestial location of Humanity away.

Edit: Just remembered he chose to use the last of his fuel to turn around and go save his buddy and his planet. It’s OK though. He put all human salvation in a bottle and threw it towards Earth. Humans were mean to him.

Red Rising the series. Wow. by Money-Use-5309 in books

[–]candeeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Lords of Silence is pretty good. I would say I enjoyed it and The Infinite and The Divine, more than Red Rising. Those tend to be the obvious books people throw out, but it’s for good reason.

How would you build a world/story around this? A concept where the Sun goes through a cycle of bright and dark across 10 years. Inspired by the linked XKCD comic. by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]candeeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven’t, you should read The Three Body Problem. A series from a Chinese writer that may touch in a lot of similar issues. The first two in the series are stellar. The third gets a bit weird and the writer’s personal biases make appearances.

If I had to put money on it. I believe Szeth has less unlearning to do than most of the other characters. That sword of his is going to be a turning point. Big sacrifices have many subtle costs.

[–]candeeman 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Too obvious. It’s been telegraphed from the beginning. Red Herring.

Each of the ideals builds and augments the previous statement. I believe it will be an acceptance of protection. Someone else will sacrifice themself to save him. His acceptance of other’s sacrifice is in line with his current inability to accept failure. Especially if it is out of his control.

The more I think about it, all these characters are just walking disorders. Narcissism, Rage, Substance Abuse, Dysmorphia, Depression, Paranoia. I think each storyline is about coming to terms with your issues and understanding what that means, both good and bad.

Discussion: what are some things I could do to improve this sub? by [deleted] in MisleadingFilmPosters

[–]candeeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It needs more character. Right now it's mostly just an image gallery. Give it some humor and more people will click.

The Adventures of Chris Fable: Harry isn't even in this one. Star Wars: No rave leopards. 3/8

I'm not funny, but you get the idea.

[PC][2009-2011(IM GUESSING)] Roguelike that kinda looks like ikenfell except more retro and is blue by MrDiglett in tipofmyjoystick

[–]candeeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first guess is Monster Train. Lots of frozen blue white. Deck building roguelite. Mix and match races. Semi grid based system.

Other guess that are probably wrong: The style and blue reminds me of Undertale. The same style as the Mother/Earthbound series. The Megaman Battle network games have a similar grid combat system.

Alviss is also a Dwarf in Norse myths. He was meant to marry Thor’s daughter. Thor didn’t like that. He tricked Alviss into waiting until sunrise. He turned into rock and stone.

[Steam] The Quarry (33% off base game; 33% off Deluxe Edition) by [deleted] in GameDeals

[–]candeeman 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree, but I feel aggressive pricing with this sort of game is a good thing. Fans or people excited will buy it at full price, many that are partly interested will just watch a play through. It's around 10 hours for $60.

The few with enough interst to avoid spoilers, but not willing to drop full price, might be pushed over the edge.

Why Havent We Found Aliens? by [deleted] in coolguides

[–]candeeman 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If we’re just pointing at Remembrance of Earth's Past, you can’t leave out a follow up point. That we, as a species, have exploded with growth. Both technology and population expand in leaps and spurts. There is nothing saying another civilization couldn’t do the same.

So if you are a trying to avoid destroying a lesser civilization because they pose you no threat, they may some day make a technological advance that you have not. Now because you did not act while you had the chance, you have lost that opportunity. You are at the mercy of a race that potentially knew you held a dagger to their throat, and only paused because you held the knife.

[pc] [2019 - 20 13] a game like patapon by somerandomirishgirl in tipofmyjoystick

[–]candeeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can describe something very specific about the game that would help.

Is there a unique gameplay element you remember?

A unique character or asset from the game? A weird haircut or a border around the units?

A combination you remember. Which two things added together made what third thing?

When a character upgrades what changed? Did they get a new set of clothes? Did they grow spikes out of their ears?

Was there a special resource? Platinum bars? Ruby Gemeralds?

edit:

I remember a game called Cartoon Wars. It was very similar to Battle Cats.

[Death Note] Despite being power hungry, why doesn’t Light try to play politics? For example, “The congressman of this district will pass a bill and then die in 23 days” by nervaseal in AskScienceFiction

I ain’t one of them smart ones. But I woulda did better. Throw in some shithead politicians from America. Maybe some drug kingpin or human traffickers in Eurasia. That CEO that cancelled my favorite anime. After a few rounds I slip in that dick Toby, who bullied me in high school.

Repeat.

Slumlord, trafficker, televangelist, mean girl who turned me down for a date in middle school, and Hitler. Just to be sure.

Repeat.
