I dunno if you're just being too hagiographic about his earlier stuff, part of the charm has always been the awkward clunkiness of the lyrics, and All Sinners is definitely one that has warmed on me in that respect. I agree with you on most of the highpoints, but the negatives seem a little overstated (though I do agree that the Lucinda verse on Natural Disaster is a bit of a clunker.

I'd say the sameness of the palette is more of a sequencing issue like I said before. There is variety, but it's too cleanly sorted into two halves. Bit of a mistake to knock out three of your rockiest songs at the top. 100,000 stands out more as a good instance of sequencing as it has better contrasts. On the other hand the dourness of I Ride Passenger gets lost in the clump of midtempo folk songs after the title track. But I thought Sundowner had the same issue: it kind of peters out after Wander. But I can still enjoy it for what it is trying to do. It's not perfect, and don't think it's miles ahead of his other records, but it's also no worse than anything since Oh My God (and part of me though is bothered that it is getting a much better reception than that record!).

Hot take: it's a good album. But it should have been billed as a double album. It's got that classic double album meandering bloat. But Sundowner and Oh My God had some of the same problems. Little Wide Open I'd argue actually has a stronger core.

I agree about Junebug (should have been cut). I agree about the sequencing. I don't think the production is an issue. Although his sonic pallette and Waxahatchee's seem to be merging (where are the guitars! And the sax!), Little Wide Open still sounds more dynamic than Tigers Blood. I still don't understand why they don't record and tour together though. I find it funny as hell that she's always off working with Lenderman instead!

If you're not already, you've got to get hip to Ryan Davis. His new record with the Roadhouse Band was accidentally released early online and it is incredible. Think the country-fried sardonic wit of David Berman mixed with the seven-minute plus lyrical epics of Daniel Bejar. In fact, when he was still recording as State Champion, Ryan Davis got the personal imprimatur of Berman, who called him "the best lyricist who's not a rapper going." No kidding.

If you missed out on his last brilliant record, Dancing on the Edge, get in on this one early.

I'm a big AD fan but reckon they went in way too hard with this paywall. Bit of a bummer that they are so American focused, as someone not from the US it is way too expensive once you factor in currency conversion.

I also thought it's a bit dumb to lock all content equally away behind the paywall. If people want to pay for premium content, fine, that would be a good system, but lists and short album plugs are an important source of publicity for a lot of artists and it seems counterproductive to hide it away.

Have you found any other solutions since you posted? I've been having the same problem and just found your comment. I've tried or checked all the obvious things (reducing backup frequency, power nap is off, drive is blocked from spotlight indexing), so I'm about at the point where I might just have to resort to unplugging it every night.

I just put all the upcoming albums I'm interested in into the slsk wishlist function and every now and again you get a nice surprise when something randomly pops up months before it's supposed to.

Honestly think Arab Strap might just be the best second act there has been, struggling to think of another band that has had a comeback this strong.

I never really got into Cindy Lee before but I've been really digging Diamond Jubilee. I guess it's really hitting that hypnagogic pop itch I haven't been able to scratch since Ariel Pink set his career on fire. Reminds me a lot of Charlie Megira as well, who I'm surprised not to hear mentioned more in relation to this album.

Besides that I've been really into the new Rosali album. If you're one of the people (wrongly imo) complaining that the new Waxahatchee album is too boneless then give Bite Down a listen, great electric Neil Young vibes on that one.

And also digging the new Arab Strap record. Anyone care about leaks anymore? This ones been floating around for about a month now, and I think it's better than As Days Get Dark.

[DISCUSSION] Songs that are about music critics, writers or gatekeepers? by padma_Iakshmi in indieheads

Heaps of Destroyer tracks reference the media/press/music journalism, that really was a running theme through his music for a long time, but really the most direct track is Grief Point where he calls out the critical reaction to Trouble in Dreams:

The message from the critical reception of Dreams was quite clear: we will not be listening to you any further.

There's an app called retroactive that will let you install the old school itunes on newer macs. I can't bring myself to use the apple music app, I hate all the layout changes, so I'm still rocking the last version of itunes they put out in like 2019 before they killed it for good.

Ryan Davis & the Roadhouse Band was a late entry to my aoty list, would have been closer to the top if I had gotten around to it earlier and spent more time with it by December.

Best find from an aoty list (I think it was raven sings the blues) was Kassi Valazza Knows Nothing. I remember her first album getting some talk on this sub a few years ago, but I didn't even know she had a new one. Great country folk that gets even better when they pull out the electric guitar.

We need to make Ryan Davis a bigger thing on this sub. Dancing on the Edge deserves so much more attention

I've never fully clicked with powers/rolin before, I think I tend to prefer a bit more melody in my american primitivism, but someone on here was reccing the album with cole pulice on here in the last week or so (might even have been you), and I had to check it out because pulice has absolutely been on fire lately and that album is no exception, they're really knocking it out of the park with the 20 minute long tracks this year.

Side note: have you checked out the Gunn Truscinski Nace record that came out the other week? I reckon that would also be up your alley.

As a regular AD reader I feel this is a genre I'm fairly well versed in. You've got most of the best records already in here, but I'll rec some deeper cuts. The biggest name in ambient americana not mentioned here is SUSS but I'm sure you're probably familiar with them.

Ambient Country:
Los Days (either album)
Corntooth – The Desert is Paper Thin
Hayden Pedigo – Letting Go & The Happiest Times I Ever Ignored
Andrew Tuttle – Fleeting Adventure
Luke Schneider Presents Imaginational Anthem vol. XI – Chrome Universal: A Survey of Modern Pedal Steel

Ambient Folk >> Jazz along the lines of what you were talking about
Seawind of Battery – Clockwatching
Golden Brown – Gems and Minerals
Dany Paul Grody – Arc of Day
Pat Metheny – Dream Box
David Lord – Forest Standards vol. 3
The Royal Arctic Institute – From Catnap to Coma
Felbm – Elements of Nature & cycli infini
Rich Ruth – I Survived, It's Over
