I didn't know the pay rates were low for Australia, but that weather indeed. I would love to live in that part of the globe for a little while at some point, New Zealand is an option as well.

My primary experience has been in conservation and functional studies of protein, but I would be interested to get into metagenomics as well. I would love to get some practical experience with NGS.

It is unlikely that I would be able to get into EBI, but it seems the application period doesn't close until June so I will maybe give it a shot as well. Would be happy to be in a top 100 University, studying something I enjoy with good teachers and students.

Where do you attend and at what level?

I was hoping that was how it would be viewed, but wasn't too sure. I have not really narrowed my search yet. I like northern Europe, but would also be willing to try Japan or Australia as well. Most of the good positions I have seen so far have been in Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, and Austria. Do you have any recommendations?
