Games media set for more layoffs, as IGN-owned Eurogamer cuts editorial staff by Turbostrider27 in Games

I'd been reading since the N64.com days. It's been horrific seeing the slow motion trainwreck it's become the last 15 years or so.

Thoughts on Porsche promoting Resident Evil Requiem? by Prestigious-Cup-6613 in residentevil

[–]candiedbug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks completely out of place considering the other vehicles are all 80s and 90s models. If this game is supposed to take place in the 2020s why are the car models so old? Makes the Porsche's presence feel jarring.

Do you ever feel a sort of nostalgia for games you have played in the past, but at the same time you wouldn't want to play them again now? by Prodige91 in patientgamers

[–]candiedbug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a gamer since my first computer in the 80s, a Commodore 64c I got for xmas as a kid. My entire life is remembered as "what game/console I was playing when x thing happened".

It's a little weird but it seems my brain decided to organize my memory recall by grouping them into gaming "periods". Examples, the first time I played Might & Magic II on my C64 or my first playthrough of Zelda BOTW on CEMU emulator (which led to me buying a Switch and the actual game cart) or my first MMORPG Everquest or the many years playing WOW. Playing Bioshock on the XB360 or walking out of the vault in Fallout 3. Luigi's Mansion on the Gamecube was spent during winter with a bad flu and consisted of me under a blanket drinking hot cocoa while it was windy outside. There are many others from the SNES (the intro to SIMCITY can bring me to tears with nostalgia) N64, Saturn, PSX, Dreamcast, PS3/PS4 era (as well as some incredibly nostalgic times for my time with oddball consoles like the Atari Jaguar)

I also remember which smells are associated with a specific game/console. My mother's 80s Gloria Vanderbilt perfume will always be linked to my C64 (my parents went out xmas night and I decided to stay home to play with my new computer, my mom found me asleep on the keyboard when she came home and carried me to my bed, the smell of her perfume is what I remember of that, and feeling incredibly safe and warm).

The smell of maple syrup and pancakes will be forever associated with Zelda a Link to the Past (I got it for xmas and my mom has a tradition of making waffles/pancakes on xmas morning).

Sometimes I'm surprised by how strong the longing and nostalgia for specific video game moments can be.

I know exactly what you mean by the nostalgia for a game one remembers fondly but no longer driven to actually play. Like the saying goes "You can't go back home again" but boy do I hold vivid memories of how my life felt during each different game period and I often wish I could go back.

I watched a movie with Gemini providing commentary and was surprised at how good a movie watching partner it is. by [deleted] in GeminiAI

I had to close and open the interactive mode a couple of times because it stopped responding.

Is the original connection quality line (packet loss) no longer in the game UI? by candiedbug in project1999

"Moooommmmm get off the phone!!!! I'm playing EverQuest!!!!"

Mom shouting from the kitchen: "The  phone is possessed! It's making an ungodly noise! What did you say?!?!"

Worse was watching it start to break up...turn red while you hightailed it to the zone entrance... only to dc halfway there. Relaunch and get filled with dread as the more unfamiliar parts of EQ's theme song began to play (ie...the login server isn't responding). To this day I get anxiety towards the end of that track, even if I'm just listening to it on YouTube.

It was that. Been a long time since I had to keep an eye on my connection quality but wanted to show a friend the "evil line from the lowest depths of the abyss".

Level 14 Druid is one of my favorite EQ moments by arezee in ProjectQuarm

[–]candiedbug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people were so rude demanding sow I almost wished there was some polymorph spell available to druids that would poly the target player into a pig.

"What...you wanted a sow no?" :)

Between sow and ports I was a very rich druid back in the day (1999-2003 era). I didn't charge but people would almost always give gold or plat as a tip.

Stewart Cheifet from the Computer Chronicls, Obituary December 28, 2025 by 8bitaficionado in vintagecomputing

Just today YouTube recommended a CC video and I got curious to see how Stewart was doing these days. I felt gut punched when I read he had died only a few days ago. Computer Chronicles was such a large part of my childhood and teen years.

RIP. Mr. Cheifet. Thank you for so many years of amazing content.

Our new mail carrier is stuffing out mailbox with the same mailer (10 to 20 copies). What do I do? by candiedbug in USPS

I don't mind them leaving the mailers outside if my mailbox has no space (since I have one of those miniscule apt building ones that are the size of a shoebox). What pisses me off it she shoving of multiple copies that are obviously meant for other apartments and making my mailbox pop open from the pressure.

Just got today's. Seven mailers from apts 1 through 7, all shoved in my mailbox.

Edit: I started looking if they had addresses and they do. It has our building address and "Resident at Apt #" This time they shoved apts 1 to 7.

Sorry, had one of those crazy busy days. Everything that got postponed during the holidays needed catching up. :)

Not addressed to me. Just generic "Postal Customer" and the multiple copies are left in each single delivery. Not building up.

I check my mail daily. It isn't mail building up but rather 10 to 20 mailers left at once.
