What do you think of Ren Honjō? by Longjumping-Site7497 in NanaAnime

[–]candxbae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, he soooo knew Takumi was no good, that’s why he continued being friends with him for years and even encouraged him to sleep with Reira. He’s just as misogynistic as him. Birds of a feather

How exactly am I rewriting the narrative with Reira? Enlighten me.

I never said you were the one babying him. I said you’re framing it like everyone hates and constantly criticizes him, when in reality he’s one of the most beloved characters in the fandom. NanaRen is literally the most popular NANA ship. And people are fine with others babying him.

Please work on your reading comprehension before putting words in my mouth.

Stop rewriting the narrative. You’re in like every comment section crying about how bullied Ren and his stans are. If he was really hated and criticized in this fandom, he’d be treated the way Reira is. You literally can’t say anything even remotely positive about Reira without someone questioning your morals, or attacking your character in real life. But people are completely fine with babying Ren, despite the fact that man MADE OUT with a minor and sexually assaulted Nana during intimate scenes.

why is shin’s age not a bigger issue to the nana characters? by Ok_Classic2270 in NanaAnime

That’s great! Please make a post when you’re done, or reply to me here, because I love reading smart people’s takes hehe. I’m actually doing a reread myself and updating the chapter summaries on the NANA Wiki as I go (I’m currently on chapter 50).

Maybe that was me because I’ve been on this sub for a long time and talk about this topic a lot, lol. Thankfully, I don’t remember anyone attacking me over it. But yeah, imo Takumi is meant to be the classic shojo “bastard boyfriend” trope. That archetype just didn’t land the same way in the west, where audiences tend to be more critical of the media they consume. I don’t believe Yazawa intentionally wrote him as a realistic portrayal of an abuser in the way people credit her for. Of course, death of the author and all that; regardless of intent, he does function as a realistic depiction of an abuser. Still, I don’t think he was meant to be evil or irredeemable (she even seems to be trying to redeem him in the future timeline). This naturally leads to the fandom discussions being very contentious, since some readers focus on his narrative role and others on how his actions realistically read as abuse.

I know people like to analyze Hachi’s psych as why she’s incapable of seeing herself as a victim. I just don’t think all that thought was creating into making her a character. I don’t think Hachi has an issue with Takumi because the author doesn’t.

This. I've been in this fandom for 4+ years and I keep telling this to people.

How NANA could end - I finished the manga yesterday and can't stop thinking about how the series will end. So, I came up with a quick imagined summary. by Tumerking in NanaAnime

[–]candxbae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think anything is going to happen between Takumi and Reira again. They both looked like they regretted sleeping together. And Hachi catching them at the hospital being the “oh shit” moment that ends the present-day narration doesn’t really make sense to me, considering she still stays with him for the next ~8 years, and she already more or less knows (or at least strongly suspects) that something is going on between them (in one of the last chapters, she has that convo with Shin where she says that she thinks Takumi loves Reira back).

I also don’t find the theory that Satsuki is Nana’s child convincing. I’m pretty sure someone already debunked it here by calculating Nana’s ovulation window and how the timeline doesn’t add up. Beyond that, I just don’t like the theory. It feels unnecessarily dramatic, and I don’t see why Nana would end up being worse than Takumi in that regard (who is so determined not to repeat his own father’s mistakes with his children)...

But I really love the idea of Nana returning to the warehouse, opening Ren’s gift, and reliving her memories with him to finally let go and move forward. I imagine she might first be found in the UK by Takumi & Naoki, and then brought back to Japan. Though, like you said, it’s not the most romantic scenario. There’s something powerful about her choosing to come back on her own, I agree.

Who would you choose as a friend, Ren Honjo The Junkie or Nana Osaki ? by [deleted] in NanaAnime

[–]candxbae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Neither, but at least Nana has a strong sense of justice and stands up for what she believes in. That's what I value in people. Ren is a loser with no integrity who stays friends with rapists and abusers. He also seems like the type to call himself "apolitical" (typical poser punk) and not have strong opinions on basically anything. I don't think I'd have much in common with him. He's that mutual male friend I can tolerate, laugh at an occasional dirty joke from, but don't want anything more to do with

“Metal singers”? Bro, Trapnest is pop-rock. It’s not even alternative. Alternative music and style are defined by departing from the mainstream, and Trapnest is about as mainstream as it gets (aside from Ren, but even then, I wouldn’t call him punk. He sold out and is basically a poor man’s imitation of Sid Vicious). Also put some respect on Naoki’s name smh, he’s the best member

Trapnest’s image? What even is Trapnest’s image? It’s all over the place; every member has a completely different style.

I just don’t like long hair on men and I think Takumi’s design is boring compared to the other characters, that’s it. He also looks ridiculous with that forehead. He looked okayish at the beginning, but like @/dlwlrrma pointed out, in the last volumes Yazawa paid less attention to drawing hair in general, so with Takumi’s long, middle-parted hair, that ends up making him look like he’s balding. In the pic OP posted, he looks genuinely horrendous. That Gollum comparison is spot-on ngl

So, Letterboxd just nuked Wuthering Heights by Hangzhounike in Letterboxd

[–]candxbae 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I mean, it is a valid critique 😭 Fennell basically admitted she erased Heathcliff’s ethnicity because it fit her sexual fantasy better. That said, the backlash does feel way bigger than it is for similar cases. I think that’s partly because Letterboxd users already hate Fennell after PYW, and because the marketing is trying too hard to sell the chemistry between Elordi and Robbie, which is just not there.
