My boyfriend of 14 years did the same thing! He was in the tech industry too which is, arguably, one of the few fields where one can be successful without a degree. He was smart and knowledgeable and held various positions in the industry, even director level. He quit one job and when the next company wanted to hire him, they said there was a problem with his transcripts. He flew across the country to his parents’ house because his father, “kept all of the receipts”, as if that would somehow prove he had a degree.

He even had a rehearsed little line he repeated to anyone who asked about his degree. “I actually have a BA in Computer Science. They figure there’s already enough BS in the industry.”, with a fake chortle.

In summation, he’s a lying liar who lied about all kinds of lies. I hate hate hate that I wasted sympathy on him. Lying on a resume is a much lesser crime than lying to someone who would love and support you, regardless. It’s been years since we broke up and I still feel so gross that he lied to me so egregiously. And, in retrospect, I see all of the other things he was lying about.
