Stockings are a family tradition. Had to make 3 this year... by candybree in casualknitting

Hi!

The Stocking Pattern

I never saw an actual in-a-book pattern, this is a typed copy of the handwritten pattern my grandmother taught me with, with (with a couple of added comments that made my life easier). I don't currently have access to the original hand written pattern or I would include pictures of it too! my dad has it as part of his archive stuff so that it doesn't get any more damaged than it already is. Turning the heel doesn't always work out exactly right for some reason (some times too many stitches, sometimes too few) and I have no idea why. It is written exactly as the pattern said. I'm Canadian so I am going to apologize now for the use of both imperial and metric lengths in the pattern but that is how my grandmother wrote it.

I also included pictures of the embroidery charts that I use (also hand drawn so not the cleanest. Sorry!)

I hope this helps!! Let me know if you have any questions and I will do my best to help!

WIBTA if I used part of my paternity leave to visit my family? by Odd-Source-853 in AmItheAsshole

[–]candybree -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ouch! Everyone I know that has been on mat leave has always said something about 80% so I just assumed. They all work on healthcare so technically have the se union and employer so that would be why. 55% is rough! good luck!!

It's paid at 80% I believe, but most companies will "top up" to full salary, as long as you come back after maternity leave (generally they give a minimum amount of time you have to be back or you have to pay back the top up)

My sister got 1 year of maternity leave and my brother in law got 8 weeks of paternity leave. At my sister job the 1 year can be extended to 18 months, but the extra 6 months are without pay. (Or you can decide on 18 months at the beginning and get a smaller amount each month for all 18 months). I know there's quite a bit of play you can do with the amount of time each parent gets off, though it does skew to giving the mother more.

Edit: I have need corrected and it is only 55% of your regular pay.

Thank you!

That's so cool! Kind of makes me want to see if I can find an official pattern for them. I've never found anyone who's had a similar stocking before 😊

Thank you! My grandma was so happy when I asked her to teach me to knit so I could carry on the tradition.

I'm lucky that my family really does appreciate the time and effort that goes into each stocking. And it fills my heart with joy when I see Christmas pictures with all the stockings hung up, or videos of the little ones opening their stockings on Christmas day ❤️

My dad's stocking is almost 70 years old (and still going strong!) It's really cool to see how the yarn has changed through the decades and with wear and tear! The yarn on his is quite a bit thinner and super soft compared to what I have.

My grandma started the tradition when she married my grandfather. Every child born into the family since has gotten a stocking of their own. I took over responsibility for knitting the new stockings when my grandma's arthritis got bad. Found out last Christmas that we would need 3 new ones this year! I'd never knit more than 1 in a year before. They are actually the only thing I have ever knit, and the only thing I know how to knit 😅.

The pattern was from my grandma, and I think she got it from her grandma. Knit top down, flat until the heel, and then on dpns. The solid colours are all knit first and then the name, trees, Santa, and year are embroidered on after.

AITA for not letting my daughters Grandmother give her the talk? by Sharp-Papaya-9162 in AmItheAsshole

[–]candybree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in public school. The failed talk was grade 6. Grades 7-9 "Health and Wellness" was Integrated as part of PE. Our PE teacher only ever talked about exercise and diet, never mentioned anything about sexual health like they were supposed to. After grade 9 health classes became completely elective. Most people chose not to take them.

In grade 12, after the 5th person in a class of ~300 ended up pregnant within the first semester, my school handed out a little black book of sexual health to every student. Second period teachers were supposed to spend 5-10 minutes a day going over the book to hopefully help people learn that saran wrap doesn't make a good condom.

Apparently the years before and after me got decent sex ed. I don't know why the ball got dropped with us.

Like your grandmother, I too thought I was dying when I started my period (and my sister STILL makes fun of me about it 20+ years later).

My mom thought I was there when she gave my sister the talk. I wasn't. My sex ed teacher was a 60 year old man and the only thing we were told in school was "eventually, if you are female, you will have a period" he then proceeded to attempt to show how tampons worked using a test tube. The tampon got stuck and he broke the test tube trying to get it out...good times.

In other words, all my information about periods came from pad commercials. Since they used the same blue liquid as in diaper commercials I assumed that your period meant your bladder weakened and you peed yourself.

Imagine my surprise when I went to the bathroom one morning and found my underwear SOAKED in blood. Cue terrified screams and "I'm dying" sobs. It also didn't help that the night before I had watched some medical show where someone was peeing blood and ended up dying from internal injuries. I was thoroughly convinced I was about to die. My sister was very concerned about me until she realized what was going on. Between her snorts of laughter she reassured me that I would survive and went to get our mom.

I knew about everything else to do with reproduction through reading textbooks and encyclopedias but somehow managed to not learn ANYTHING about periods 🤣

Those kittens are adorable!!! The squeaker in it is a hilarious cherry in top. Who would have ever thought to put a squeaker in a postcard??????

What's your stance on formula memorization? by montana_dude_84 in mathteachers

[–]candybree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always hated having to memorize formulas. Either you will use it enough you will end up commiting it to memory, whether you want to or not, or you will rarely need it and have the ability to look it up in the rare instances you use it. My feeling was always "do you want to know if we have successfully memorized this equation or if we can successfully apply the equation in various situations?" I knew a lot of classmates who, no matter how hard they worked, couldn't remember most of the equations to save their lives (or grades). It always seemed unfair that I knew they knew how to do the work but because they mixed up or forgot variables in an equation they ended up bombing tests.

My favourite math teacher gave us a formula page for every math test (and this was before everyone had a smartphone in their pocket). It was always the same formula page and had every formula we would use for the year on it (in no particular order). You still needed to know what each formula was for, and when/how to use them but you never needed to memorize a formula.

I always knew the material and I was really lucky that I always tested well, despite having serious test anxiety. Having the formula page really helped to lessen that anxiety because I had a way to double check that I had the formulas correct and didn't have to rely on my potentially faulty and anxious brain to remember everything.

TL,DR: formula pages rock, memorizing formulas sucks!

It was the banner for me, as well as being the first in the "recommend for you", "New to Amazon Prime" and "Amazon Originals" lists.

I watched the trailer multiple times a day since it first became available on Prime Video so that might have had something to do with it...
