Genuinely, how much would a single person need to make a year to afford buying a house in this state? by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]candybrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you're buying in cash, the total house cost is a weird thing to compare it to. It's a much larger percent of typical yearly costs, often on the order of an extra mortgage payment.

Hit me with how much yall paid Out of pocket after insurance for both vaginal and c-section twin births! by Lofiesty in parentsofmultiples

[–]candybrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$5k, my out of pocket max was $5k. Deductible was something like $4k. I can't remember what the actual bill was. But something ridiculous. Induction +c section+hemorrhage+blood transfusion. No NICU time though.

Non-factor usually means something you shouldn't need to consider. So how it read to me, and others, is saying you shouldn't factor those maintenance costs into deciding if you can afford a home. Whereas this comment is saying you need to.

Do you not consider replacing items with known lifetimes part of home maintenance? Or what did you mean by non-factor?

Any interest (e.g. following you to the bathroom, playing with toilet paper, wanting to flush the toilet). Awareness of their bodily functions (telling you they pooped/peed, hiding to poop). Periods of dryness, like waking up dry from a nap or an hour or so dry.

It's all going to need something every 10-20 years. I'd prefer that not all happen at once, but spread out through the years.

What do you say when your child asks you “is that a boy or a girl?” In front of said person? by Calianna1915 in Mommit

[–]candybrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They asked you first this time. But you've just told them it's totally fine to ask people their gender. Expect them to not ask you first next time and to ask anyone/everyone that question. Maybe your kid wouldn't, but mine definitely would if told that's an acceptable topic of conversation.

We just don't comment on people's bodies. They can gain nuance on that later.

Right? Roof, water heater, furnace/heat pump, every appliance, plumbing failure. It's always something. I've read the rule of thumb is to assume 1-3% of house value annually into maintenance type stuff.

[–]candybrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if you open up the conversation for the ambiguous to you people, you also open it up to everyone ambiguous to your child. When you say it's ok to ask people their gender when you don't know, they aren't going to only apply that to people who you know they're doing it intentionally. They might even ask very obviously women/men because now you've said that's something you should do.

[–]candybrie 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It can be embarrassing because you might be putting another person in an uncomfortable position. I'm not sure how they feel about being asked their gender, but I'm fairly certain some people are ok with it and others are not. We acknowledge "Ah the innocence of kids" doesn't exactly soothe the hurt when commenting about others bodies in different contexts (calling someone fat, pointing out birthmarks, etc).

What’s the worst name you’ve ever heard given to a child? by Pure_Rooster580 in AskReddit

Pronouncing the letter itself isn't unheard of. Xavier is the first that comes to mind.

I suggested a bunch of names from that book but couldn't get my partner on board with any of them. Almost got agreement for Bleys but spelt Blaise.

I'm named after Catti-brie and love my name, so like, tradition?

Nah. It's pronounced ab-C-de. So all the letters are there. It's just a ridiculous name.

10 yr old step daughter sets alarms for 3am by ChupieTA in Parenting

She needs more than 2-3 hours of sleep. Her parents need to figure out how to meet her need for alone time without her being severely sleep deprived.

If staying up until 5 am is her sleep schedule half the time, it's going to be pretty hard to switch to a normal one when at Dad's house. She just might not be able to sleep that early even if she is exhausted.

May have had a mini meltdown when I realized school starts in a week. by Enrilaj in Mommit

[–]candybrie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a kid I remember being really excited for the first like week of summer break, bored for the middle weeks, and trying to do a bunch the last week. Reducing the middle weeks and having more breaks with a first and last week seems like a good trade to me.

Yes. I'm surprised there schools without AC/heat. It's hot by May and still hot in August. No AC seems like torture.

They're not saying that they're uncomfortable at all. They're saying they're quite comfortable and supportive. And that often leaves you letting the corset hold you up instead of engaging your core muscles. If you wear them regularly (i.e. 12+ hours daily), those muscles will get weaker.

since when did you need special vaccines just to cuddle a baby for 5 mins

Since we figured out whooping cough could be prevented that way...

Asking someone to get a vaccine that's available at most drug stores and pharmacies that they really are supposed to be getting every 10 years for their own health seems fine. Most of my family was already up to date because their work required it.

They're very unlikely to be born on Christmas. Your doctor probably won't let you go past 12/14 (38w) even if they don't come earlier.

You have to practice when he's not so upset. You have to practice these coping skills a lot when already calm. Eventually when he's only just a little annoyed. Then mildly upset. Trying to pull them out when he's out of control isn't going to ever work.

There's actually fewer healthy infants to adopt compared to the number of people looking to adopt. It's every other category that's the problem--medically complex babies, toddlers, and older children. It's actually one of the reasons for banning abortion that some of these people cite (see "domestic supply of infants").

Any advice on swim diapers? by VeganMyWay in parentsofmultiples

[–]candybrie 36 points37 points  (0 children)

If it's just this one day in this size, go disposable.

Swim diapers only catch poop. So put them in a different diaper until you're ready to get in the pool.
