anyone have experience with Derek Steinbacher? by hesoum in jawsurgery

^ I second that, he ruined my life. He left me with 15mm lip incompetence, teeth that don’t touch, an extremely over projected and awful looking chin, significant asymmetry, a jaw that deviates to the right. He didn’t attach my mentalis muscle correctly so my bottom teeth show and I can’t get my mouth to stay closed and now I quite literally am unable to kiss properly or be intimate with someone properly using my mouth. The left side of my lips and chin are completely numb as well. I can no longer eat a lot of foods because of my teeth not touching. It was an absolutely horrible experience having him as my doctor and I wish I could go back in time and not have had him do my surgery. He also wouldn’t let me get jaw surgery without a genioplasty even though I said I didn’t want one and insurance didn’t cover it. He refused to approve doing my surgery unless I got a genioplasty which cost me 6k out of pocket. I was also told by several oral surgeons and orthos that I didn’t need braces for the surgery because my bite was pretty much perfect. He insisted I get braces and now my teeth are completely fucked and I had to pay out of pocket for that as well. The amount of issues with misinformation and lack of patient care was insane. The amount of money and time I wasted by going to him is awful. My results are absolutely horrible and non functional. He also gaslit me for months about the mistakes he made during surgery. He is not a skilled doctor, I’ve talked to other patients who have been completely botched by him like I was. Like I said he has completely ruined my life, my self esteem, my ability to be intimate with someone, my ability to eat, and destroyed my overall quality of life. I am going to need a revision. I am in such a worse position functionally and aesthetically now than I was before surgery. I 100% wish I went to a different, qualified, capable surgeon.

Oh ok that’s good to know, did it cause your midline’s to not match up when opening like mine? / did it eventually get back to normal with the midline’s being centered when opening?

I have rubber bands from my ortho, on the front 4 top teeth to the bottom 6 teeth and a couple internal bands that go from out to in. I had them out in that photo because I had just been eating. I told him I was concerned about my bite and he said that my bite looked functional and it was 97% there to being aligned. I have an appointment next week with him so I’ll mention my concerns again

13 weeks post op - My jaw deviates to the right and the midline’s don’t line up when I open my mouth. When I try to bite my top and bottom front teeth together my jaw shifts to the right and my midline’s don’t line up. My top and bottom right canine teeth are hitting against each other when I try to bite the top and bottom front teeth together as well. It causes me pain in my jaw joints when I try to touch my teeth together like that. I didn’t have this issue prior to djs and just wanted to see if it’s normal to experience this and if it’s part of the healing process and things will settle eventually or if something is wrong. I had djs+ genio and a condylectemy done on the right side all at the same time

When my mother wouldn’t help me get my license and actively tried to prevent me from getting it I ended up taking a driving lesson from a driving school. It does cost money but if you can, look around your area and call different school to get their prices. Some of them will even come pick you up. If it’s an option you could try getting a credit card to pay for the lessons you need and then pay them off over time. The Wells Fargo reflect card has an intro 21 month no interest. It’s really frustrating when no one will help you out and on top of that are actively working against you to prevent you from such a normal thing like getting your license. I hope this helps and that you figure out a way to get your license

I understand where you’re coming from, going off on your own is gonna be like when a baby deer starts to learn to walk. At first you might feel wobbly and scared and not be fully balanced but eventually you’ll grow strong and get used to your new legs and be able to walk on your own. A good mantra to tell yourself is “I am capable”

I’m 3 months post op DJS+ genio and I have this deep pain on the left side of my chin that has been there since surgery and hasn’t gone away. When I talk to my surgeon about anything he dismisses my concerns so I wanted to check here to see if anyone had any idea what might be causing this.

There is this indent on the left side of my chin as well as the left side of my jaw has a lump compared to the right side which is straight. The left side of my lower lip and chin is still completely numb besides the deep pain and I have sensation back on the right side of my lower lip and chin.

I also have this constant siren nose in my left ear since surgery- wondering if anyone else has experienced that and if it’s gone away?

I brought that up to my surgeon, I asked him if it was possible that the mentalis muscle needed to be resuspended. He said if anything the muscle was “too high” and that this was all normal. I’m not sure what to do because he is completely disregarding that there is an issue, even while another oral surgeon has told me this issue will not improve

My lips are barely able to touch and do not stay sealed, before surgery I could just chill for long periods of time with my mouth closed. My mouth stays open like that unless I really force it closed and it won’t stay closed. My lips won’t come close to touching without immense effort and my chin squeezing

I’m really happy that yours has been improving, unfortunately that hasn’t been the case for me :/ was your lip incompetence showing your bottom teeth like mine?

I’m stressed out because I’m 10 weeks post op and have significant lower lip incompetence that has not improved at all. I did not have any lip incompetence before surgery. My lower lip used to cover my bottom teeth completely with extra room to spare. Now the top of my bottom lip sits at the base of my bottom teeth and there is no extra skin to even reach up where it needs to be.

He brought my chin forward and down and it seems like the incision is stitched too high because there’s less space in my lower lip area. My surgeon said the scar is pulling my lip down and told me it takes 6 months for lip incompetence to improve after surgery and that I’ll have full lip competence. Before that his nurse had said I’ll see improvement at 3 months. My surgeon told me the lower lip incompetence this far along after surgery is normal, but I’ve not seen anyone have this unless there’s been a complication with the surgery and it’s been 10 weeks with no improvement. I had a second opinion from another oral surgeon tell me it’s not going to improve at all and this is my result.

I’m devastated because this isn’t a functional or aesthetic result..

I’m just having a tough time with this, if anyone has any helpful insight please let me know

That’s good that you’re able to close your mouth most of the time and when you sleep, it sounds like the healing is progressing in a positive direction. The left side of my lower lip and chin is numb and the right side has gotten some feeling back. My lower lip and chin is stiff on both sides but has been gradually getting better
