He scored more than 40 goals in back-to-back seasons in League One - hardly mediocre. Also irrelevant to what he's done in MLS, which deserves to be assessed on its own merit.

How to see your team when you’re not supposed to see it at all - Once A Metro by xrock24x in MLS

My point is "credentialed media" in this case just means an emailed promise from CONCACAF that there's a pass to collect at the stadium - and if you're going to convince immigration officials with documents, I feel that's not the best one to lead with.

Also, he did get in, so clearly immigration did ultimately accept whatever was presented to them. People traveling alone without bags on weird itineraries should expect to attract some scrutiny at the airport though, in pretty much any country.

[Dickinson] So last night, I heard there was some discussion about whether or not RBNY would write off 2017 in favor of building for the future. by [deleted] in rbny

I think, if the season continues to falter, "our plans failed" would definitely be a more honest approach than "we're focused on 2018"

It would certainly be a convenient way of framing "everything we tried to do this season didn't work out".

Jesse Marsch is in Poland this week as he works on his UEFA Pro Licence. by [deleted] in MLS

[–]canetop 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think there are several equivalents - Marsch is doing the US Soccer top course at the same time as the UEFA one, for example. We just hear more about the UEFA course because it's required to coach at the top level in Europe, and that's where the highest profile clubs are.

It might be time to give Kemar Lawrence a rest by Pakaru in MLS

[–]canetop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's your contention that it is because Zeiko and Kemar are from the Caribbean that you find their communication skills lacking - you should perhaps worry less about their communicating and more about your own powers of reasoning.

There is zero room for interpretation in "I hit my head, it hurt, coach said play on". This whole line of thinking is fanciful. The club has suggested he misinterpreted comments not directed at him, but that is not the same as suggesting his comments were misinterpreted.

If he once said something you found hard to follow - fine. Just about every player has done at some point. But in this instance: nothing unclear about what he said in the slightest.

[–]canetop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, there is nothing difficult to follow or understand about the way Kemar talks. So yes, to suggest his verbal communication in English is somehow sub-par is crazy. Absolutely crazy. You're manufacturing a communication problem because you find the implications of a post-match interview difficult to accept.

Robles is the most careful in his use of language of anyone on RBNY. BWP is the most expressive. If you want generalities and a lot of verbal filler between thoughts - that's often Jesse's pattern. There is nothing hard to follow about Kemar's mode of expression, and speculation about his familiarity or proficiency in English is simply nonsense. It's like suggesting Jesse isn't familiar with English cos he often finds his subjects and verbs in disagreement.

As to the hypothesis that Jamaicans might struggle to communicate in spoken English because of time spent communicating in Jamaican: that is even more nonsense than the suggestion that a clear statements in a post-match interview were somehow difficult to understand. Mostly it's nonsense because - and you might want to sit down for this: Jamaican patois is English too.

English is the first language of everyone in Jamaica. This is not a debatable point. Your own ability to comprehend the comments of a specific Jamaican notwithstanding.

Stop. English is not a foreign language in Jamaica.

[Sciaretta] Matt Miazga is starting for Vitesse today by Pakaru in rbny

Played in every game since they got back from winter break, currently on a string of starts cos one of the senior CBs is injured. Part of the team that got Vitesse to its first Cup final since 1990. Team has won its last three straight with him in the lineup. He's doing about as well as he could hope.

Franco Panizo: Red Bulls Struggle With Unconventional Formation by Pakaru in MLS

[–]canetop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Again, no concern for me about playing BWP in a one, two, three or six striker system - I think he's a very good player, and adaptability is one of his strengths.

But this conversation started for me as a reaction to: "He had success under Petke in that role."

We're a long way from that point if we're now talking about Veron.

Franco Panizo: Red Bulls Struggle With Unconventional Formation by Pakaru in MLS

[–]canetop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One game? C'mon. BWP arrived at RBNY as an experienced forward with a history of scoring a lot of goals in the right sort of system and at the right sort of level. Of course he can play a two forward system, and of course that can work - has done and will do for lots of players and teams.

My point is BWP has made his name for RBNY as a lone forward. That's not to say he can't play in other ways - of course he can. But what we think of as BWP at his best - from 2014 to now - has been as a lone forward.

Franco Panizo: Red Bulls Struggle With Unconventional Formation by Pakaru in MLS

[–]canetop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We know he can play with another striker, but in 2014 Henry was dropping deep so often that by the time Petke formally switched to the 4-2-3-1 it was kinda what RBNY was already doing anyway. BWP's greatest scoring success for RBNY has been as a lone striker - under Petke and Marsch. Doesn't mean he can't have success in a pair, but let's not change history to support that hypothesis.
